Meet Adeodatus

* Presence: Adeodatus is a slenderly built boy with sun kissed skin from countless hours playing in it's warm embrace. His pale blue eyes reflect a lavender hue in the right lights. His hair, naturally a blond color, is dyed a shocking bright pink and is allowed to grow in a untrimmed cascade below his shoulders. His clothing style seems to be a bastardisation of 'outback hiker' and 'wanna be techno punk'. A sleeveless leather jacket trimmed in white wool covers a white t-shirt, tight fitting suede pants hang low upon his hips and tuck into black hiking boots. About his neck are several glow in the dark hoop necklaces of various toxic colors, a matching set of bracelets circle one wrist, while on the other is a leather cuff. Adeodatus proudly wears a amethyst stud in each of his ears and a matching ring on his cuffed hand

* Genetics: Adeodatus is a 13 year old Australian born and raised boy. His mother, Valerie, is a Aussie true and so is his father, whomever he may be. Adeodatus' mother is a mere 16 years older then himself, making for a very unconventional upbringing. He has no other living relatives as far as he can tell, as Valerie has never seemed to be 'in the right mood' to answer questions about her own folks.

* Personality: Adeodatus has a pleasant optimistic view of the future. It is always darkest before the dawn, and the coldest too. Such is his view. Thankfully he is not wildly taken with his pre-notion of possibilities. Yes, Adeodatus has a uplifted spirit, but it can also be considered a positive determination for good possibilities to exist.

Adeodatus has a dutiful nature to couple with his light heartedness. He views vows and promises as spiritual law, and to break one willingly leaves a dark mark upon ones spirit. If he makes a vow to accomplish something, he will spend as long as it takes to fulfill it.

* Earths Plight: The war was sad. The Plague was sad. The coming conflict is sad. However...it is our fault. Just as with broken vows, the actions of the past paint darkness upon the spirit of the world. Adeodatus does not know if humanity will win the up and coming war, but he knows that it is only by trying our best that perhaps we can survive. He believes that had humanity treated the first visitors with kindness and respect, the war and all that followed would not have happened. Yes, we must prepare. Yes we must do all that we can to ensure we have a future. But we must also be honest to ourselves in admittance of guilt. What befalls us comes from our own dark past. It is up to the youth now to redeem humanity. It is not only the Visitors humanity has wronged, but his own fellow creatures upon this planet. Adeodatus believes the return of elves and magic is a good sign, it is a second chance to recreate the world as it should have been made all those years ago.

Beans Anyone?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Who is Beans? Beans happens to be Adeodatus' best friend ever. A birthday gift given to him by his mother when he was twelve, Adeodatus has doted upon his furry companion horribly. Ah yes, Beans happens to be a ferret.

Beans has spent no more time away from Adeodatus' side then the boy has had no choice in. There have been incidents when Beans has successfully smuggled his self to school with Aeodatus (Though Aeodatus would admit to his mother each time that he purposefully did not notice the added weight in his backpack). Adeodatus adores his sneaky pet, and has spent many a evening cuddled up with his Beans reading stories...or scattering several dozen newspaper balls across the living room for Beans to stalk.

Adeodatus has a small collection of Beans Cloths that he often dresses the ferret in. Little hats, little coats, little collars all for Beans to wear. The ferret does not seem to mind the outfits, as he has been wearing them nearly his entire life, and almost seems to strut when he has a new outfit on. He's one Cool Beans.

Talents, Faults, Hobbies, and Quirks

* Animal Affinity: Adeodatus has a way with animals. Domesticated or wild, he seems to have a uncanny knack of understanding the body language of the beasts. His friends have often teased him for having the 'Snow White Effect' on animals. Adeodatus has embraced this knack of his and spent many hours coaxing the small wildlife about his home to him. Either for simple feeding and petting pleasure, or to better study the creatures up close.

* Mama's Boy: If ever there was a child that doted upon his mother, Adeodatus was it. He loves his mother, to the point of annoying. 'Mum says too much sleep dulls the senses' 'Mum thinks folks who don't have the sense to set down the grog after they get tipsy is just a yarra.' Adeodatus has never once had a fight with his mother, as 'Mum's know best' and all.

* Rune Lore: While Adeodatus has never openly advertised he practices the casting of rune-stones, he finds it a very good method to relax and take some time to reflect inwardly. Though Adeodatus seems to cast the runes often, he has never used them for anything other then himself, and he has never shared just what he has read in the stones to anyone. He believes that the voice of wisdom that is communicated through the stones, is not a party trick to be performed for the amusement or curiosity of others. What he reads upon the stones is never a cut and dry answer, but always a question that must be posed to himself first before he can discover the meaning. This hobby that Adeodatus practices has become a normal routine for him. Oftentimes at the end of the day he will sit on his bedroom floor, meditating before casting the stones, with no particular question in mind other then to see what they have to say to him. As the next step in his practice, Adeodatus has begun to collect various gemstones with the purpose of carving his own personal runes in an attempt to become more attuned with the stones.

* Party Studier: Though Adeodatus is only a young child, he has been exposed to things that boys usually get into later in life. That is, the Party. Adeodatus' mother is still in her late twenties, and still enjoys a good party. As a result, Adeodatus has been taken to quite a few techno raves due to his insistence to stay close to his mother. While mom is out on the dance floor with some of her girlfriends, Adeodatus sits peaceably at a table, his schoolbooks and homework before him. Nodding his head in time to the steady bass of the music, he tends to his studies in a un-bothered manner. In fact, Adeodatus has found that studying is far easier with blaring loud music with a hypnotic rhythm playing.

* An Unusual Name: Adeodatus is not a usual name you'd hear around Australia. In fact it is Latin. Valerie in her 'youth' was quite fond of Roman and Greek myths. When she discovered she was pregnant, her biggest choice was whether to name her Child Zeus or Jupiter. Thankfully she decided on Adeodatus which means 'Given by God' in Latin. Due to her love of the ancient Greek and roman tales, Valerie substituted 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Hansel and Gretal' bed time stories for tales of Zeus and Perseus.

History of a Lek

Valerie Lek to Adeodatus at six "At the end of the world...you can expect to find some really great parties."

For a young girl, nearly a woman, who had not yet had the chance to fully enjoy life The Earthian Wars seemed like the utter end. The Aliens had come with their superior technology to completely kill off and enslave the human race. Val wasn't going to waste what little time she had left going to school, work, or church. It didn't matter how things had started out, she'd seen enough movie flicks to know how things were going to end up. It did not matter what part of the world she was on, they were going to come and get her. And when they did, she'd have no regrets left about her life unlived.

But the world did not end. Val did not die. In fact, Val started to get a bit fuller around the middle. At the tender age of 16, Val had learned of a consequence when you thought there were no consequences. Rather then allow herself to be drawn into the temptation of depression, Val attempted to set things right in her life. The Aliens had left for some unknown reason at the time, and the small group of folks she had spent her time hiding with seemed hopeful that they could return to a normal lifestyle. Normal was not a option now for the pregnant Val. She returned to the remains of her old hometown in an attempt to find her mum and dad. Sadly she had no knowledge of what had befallen her parents, and no relative to fall back on for help. Val was utterly alone save for the baby in her belly.

Val was still a child in some ways, but she had some good sense about her. In the passing of the next few years she managed to get herself a one room apartment in nice condition to raise her baby. Working as a waitress at a diner Val gave up the possibility of returning to school in order to support herself and her son. She was still a child, still growing up...but she had lost all her family save the one member she had made herself. Val was determined to be a better mother then she had been a daughter.

Adeodatus to a school friend at seven "Is't not about them being more afreed of you then you are of them. Is't about you letting um know there's nothin to be afreed of at all."

A flash of brightly colored lights breaking the darkness of a room. A hard steady beat thundering from your feet, to your butt, to your head and heart. A crush of bodies moving as if one entity joined in joy. A sweet smile upon a tired young girls face as he is cradled close and safe to her chest. This is Adeodatus' earliest and fondest memory. Some random party somewhere with his mother, surrounded by other girls that seemed to be the same age as her. She seemed happy, and he was there with her. It's a short memory. Simply remembering her smile and her laugh. Her words to him barely heard over the tuneless throb of music "Never let the day pass without something to smile about Adeo!"

That memory has been a great influence in Adeodatus' growth. Every day, just as his mother had said, he has attempted to find at least one thing or reason to smile. It hasn't been all that hard. Though his mother has worked herself hard during the day, she has always taken time out during the night to go and find a 'Wicked Party' to unwind. A fan of techno music, glow in the dark paints and jewelry, and odd fashion fads; Adeodatus has had quite the stimulation as a child. He remembers times merely sitting on a table, his mother not ten feet away, dancing to the beat of some rapid song. In his hands some stone or other, a amethyst or simple quartz carved into the shape of a animal for his amusement. Hoops of glowing plastic jewelry on his wrists or neck or head. Sometimes a young man would dance with his mother, but it was almost always a sure thing that when she returned to the table to be with Adeo, she was alone.

Teacher to Adeodatus at Eight "It is the way of life to eventually end. Let's not let fear of it's end hold us in place, keeping us captive from enjoying what time we have been blessed with and with who."

A week later Adeodatus' favorite teacher resigned. She had gotten ill with what seemed at first to be the flu. Despite her assurances that she merely had a common illness, she had taken steps to keep some distance between herself and others. As her 'flu' began to grow worse, she resigned. Her last words to Adeodatus had a deep effect upon the boy, whom had not wanted to go back to school for days after he had realized his favorite teacher would never be there again to welcome him. Val understood his grief and did her best to reassure her boy in the only ways she knew how. With hugs and reinforced words of love.

Adeodatus was relatively fortunate during the years the Plague ravaged the world. Though he did lose his favorite teacher, and a handful of the other students he knew personally were taken away. Adeodatus never lost his mother. The frightening potential that his mother might die and be lost to him forever caused Adeo to become a little more clingy then most boys his age tended to be. Adeo did not want to go over to friends houses to play, rather he'd want them to come to his home. Adeo never wanted to play anywhere else but in his backyard, unless his mother was to come with him. If his mother was late getting home from work, Adeo had a tendency to have small panic attack like symptoms. Pacing in front of the window and peeking out it every few seconds until he saw her walking down the sidewalk. When she did get a cold, Adeo refused to go to school. Insisting that he stay with her constantly, his homework brought to him by a fellow student so he could keep up in classes.

As Adeo grew older, his unacknowledged fear of losing his mother abated somewhat. He became a bit more at ease when his mother was out of sight and he found it easier to become distracted in his play outside of his home. It was during this time that his knack for dealing with animals truly blossomed.

"So's what we have here is a Taipan that got the bad idea to move into some's garden shed. We're just keepin 'im here till...Good GOD Boy what are you doing!?" Animal Shelter Employee to Adeodatus on his first day of volunteering.

When Adeodatus turned eleven he took it upon himself to try and find a way to bring some extra cash home. So his mother would not have to work so hard in his opinion. The answer to him seemed to be the local animal shelter. At first he started off volunteering for free, hoping that if he proved to the folks at the shelter he could handle animals well, they would consider giving him 'tips' for his help. Unfortunately on his very first day Adeodatus nearly ended up being banned from the premises when he decided to help the shelter out by moving a snake that they had caught to a place outside the city and safer for both the snake and the people there. The Animal Shelter employee understandably had something of a fit, seeing a young boy picking up one of the most poisonous snakes in Australlia as if it were some harmless kitten.

It took a great deal of assurances to the employee, Jace his name was, to even get him to calm down, and it wasn't until Adeodatus had replaced the snake in it's cage that Jace finally was able to breath easily. Adeodatus had felt no sense of fear in picking up the snake, and he knew after just a few moments of looking at it, that the snake was not afraid of him. He had simply assumed that Jace would understand, the way his mother did when she found him stroking the wild ground squirrels outside in the backyard. Adeodatus would not be one to make that mistake again. He listened keenly to all the directions given him, and though he knew none of the animals would harm him, he followed the instructions in dealing with the creatures of the wild. Since then he has become a regular at the Shelter. Feeding the beasts, cleaning their cages, and doing other small menial tasks for the 'safer' creatures. When he has free time, Adeodatus does spend a good deal of time outside of the cages of animals that he feels are stressed or frightened. Whispering soft words, and sometimes whispering non-sense words to calm the creatures down and help them relax. Always after such 'talks' he feels the animal is more calm, happier, or just a bit less stressed.

Did you get the Letters?

Adeodatus turned up the cracked stone sidewalk to his home. The apartment house was in bad repaid, siding hung cracked and loose, shingles stuck up like the ruffled feathers of a bird on the roof, and weeds stubbornly clung to life in the dry soil surrounding the foundation. Adjusting the strap of his jean book bag on his left shoulder, Adeo took the four small steps up to the porch in two quick strides. The front of the house had a pair of badly weather stained metal doors for an entrance. The one of the left had rusted shut years ago. Adeo couldn't ever remember being able to open it, and the door on the right was rusted to the point it would not close all the way, so there was always a little gap that let the wind blow dust or rain into the front hall.

Stepping into that hall now, Adeo ignored the crunch of dirt on the weather ruined wood floor, and turned to the small alcove wall just inside the doorway. Six beaten black metal mailbox's were nailed in a uniform setting. Three across, two down, with the name Lek painted in pink on the fifth one in the set. Flipping open the lid, Adeo ran his fingers along the inside, and sighed. It was empty, no letters today. Perhaps mum had picked them up before she left for work?

Empty handed, but not to be discouraged yet, Adeo took the crooked creaking stairs three at a time till he was up to the third floor. The attic really, and hurried down the short hall to the back of the building. A small door, it's frame a bit crooked and with a gap at the top right corner that let in the chilly air at night, was where he stopped to fish a key from a suede string around his neck. 'Lek' had been painted on the front of this door as well, in pink paint then flicked with silver sparkles which had mostly fallen off over the years or chipped away. When the door opened, Adeo paused only long enough to hang the key on a bent nail just inside the doorway.

"Mum? You home Mum? You get the Letters Mum?" He knew she wouldn't be. She had another hour and a half before her shift at the diner ended. Perhaps she had left the letters on the kitchen table. Adeo pushed the door closed behind him, giving it a firm shove till he heard the small 'snick' sound of the lock sliding into place. After which he eagerly crossed the cramped living room, shucking his bag into the shabby time faded love seat on his way into the kitchen. It was just as small and cramped as the living room, with no place at all for a table, much less chairs, for eating. A narrow pathway with a counter top, stove, sink, and fridge lining one wall, cupboards above, and a window about the size of Adeo's two hands laid side by side above the stove.

The counter had the bowls from last nights stew and this mornings cereal stacked upon it. Coco mugs, a empty orange juice box, and seven different spoons filled the sink. No Letters. Adeo took a moment to look at the mess. Perhaps if mum had seen his name on a Letter she had placed it on his bed? Turning about, he left the tiny kitchen behind and crossed the living room in five quick steps.

He had to step over the pile of clothing strewn in the doorway. mum seemed to have started separating the dark cloths from the light, but had not finished before she had to go to work so there they sat. Treading with little concern on what may or may not have been his mums underwear, Adeo looked about the small dark room. His bed was shoved in the far corner, the sheets carefully smoothed out and in place, but with a mess of clothing half burying it. Seems Mum had pulled his cloths out from under his bed. Whoops.

His Mums bed was in the corner opposite of his own, and looking no better then his either. Her sheets were still unmade, and there was a lump of bedroom debris scattered across it. The single dresser in the room had all of it's drawers open, to reveal they were all pretty much empty. It seemed mum had no choice but to do laundry tonight if either of them were going to have clean cloths for tomorrow. It was already late, nearly 8 O'clock. There were no Letters to be seen at all.

Stretching his legs over the pile of cloths in the doorway again, Aeo exited the room feeling a little more let down now. he had hoped dto get his Letter today. Seeing as how it wasn't here...perhaps Mum hadn't had time to bring the letters upstairs. Perhaps she had taken them with her to work. He'd just have to wait till she got home....wait another hour or so till she got home.

Mum would be tired from work, and would still have things to do here at home. As Adeo looked at the untidy apartment he started to cross to the kitchen. Mum didn't know about the letter yet, Adeo had been unable to dredge up the courage to tell her. How could he tell his Mum he wanted to go away? Would Mum understand? How could he tell her that he thought the spirits wanted him to go. Though he himself felt a little unsure. The plague hadn't made anyone sick in a while now, but he was still worried about his mum getting it. It was a irrational fear, he knew that for sure, and there was much more that he could and should be doing. He'd tell her tonight when she got home. Whether the Letter had come or not. It wasn't fair not to tell her.

Entering the kitchen, Adeo plucked the orange juice box from the sink and opened the cupboard under the sink to throw it in the trash. Kneeing it closed, he turned the faucet on, and let it run a few moments until the brown color was gone, and proceeded to fill the sink with lukewarm soapy water. When mum got home he'd ask her about the Letter, then whether she had it or not, he'd tell her about the application he and the teacher at school had filled out. He wouldn't feel like he was sneaking about with a secret in shame if he told her. Besides...he'd only sent the Letter out two days ago. If she didn't want him to go...he'd certainly have enough time to send another one out apologizing for wasting the schools time with his application.... though he really hoped she'd not feel that way.

The Nature of Cooties

"No such thing." Adeodatus firmly stated. His little pink head nodding to further accent his declaration. He was only seven at this particular period of time. His hair a bright shock of pink fluff that resembled a dandelion flower in full bloom.

"Is so!" retaliated his current playmate, a boy his own age with dusty brown hair and equally brown eyes. Together the two boys were sprawled out on Adeodatus' living room floor. A very battered Candy Land board was pieced together in front of them. Chipped rocks served as the missing plastic gingerbread men.

"No there isn't. There's no such thing as Cooties" Adeo responded calmly as he picked up a wrinkled square of torn notebook paper from a pile of equally wrinkly papers and flipped it over. "Green" He said as he laid the scrap of paper down by the board side. Picking up a ragged looking quartz stone, he moved it three spaces from the blue square it had been on and to a green one.

"Is so. My brother said his mates cousin once got kissed by a girl, and got her cooties on his lips and all his teeth fell out!" the boy insisted as he watched Adeodatus move his rock to the right color.

Adeo looked up from the board, watching as the boy waved his hand uncertainly over the pile of torn up papers. "No" He again stated, his head giving a very slow shake as he continued. "There's nothing that proves Cooties exist. I suspect if they did though...they'd be like parasites. Like fleas or bed bugs, and wouldn't be particular to boys or girls. Meaning anyone at all could have Cooties. Say's Red." He interrupted his defense as his friend finally lifted a piece of paper and held it up towards Adeodatus to read the scribbled letters written in capitals across it. As his friend picked up a smooth gray piece of common stone Adeo continued. "I think your brothers mates cousin just ate too much Kookaburra before bed n' didn't wash his teeth none."

The boy placed his rock on a red square, and lifted a very puzzled expression to Adeo. For a few moments a strange uncomfortable silence hung in the air, broken only by the sound of the birds outside drifting in through a open window. Adeodatus felt a growing unease, until the boy across from him spoke. "Your weird. Go, it's your turn."

"Yeah..." Adeo muttered, and reached for another slip of paper. He could feel a slight color in his cheeks as he read off the scribbled letters. "Two Blue..."
