Holy s**t guys. Are we STILL trying to decipher this?
Music Rock Vol. 32, August 2002:
"What does the name “Dir en grey” mean?
Kaoru: It means “greyish silver coin”…it’s a kind of coinage that German (”dir”), French (”en”) and English (”grey”) rolled into one.
Who came up with this name?
Kaoru: Each of us came up with a different name for the band at first. Then, I forgot who, maybe me, but someone came up with this name, and in the end it was the one we chose. In fact I preferred this name from the start. However, there were some members who didn’t prefer this, but with a little persuasion I got them to agree to it. (smile)"
ALSO:
In
this (rather funny) spoofed interview, Kyo's REALLY talking about the 'greyish coin' business and stuff (@ 5:50).
Then it goes to Kao who explains the three different languages (and the translator calls English 'Amerkiago' XD). From there they discuss who's idea it was, etc.
But NO WHERE IN THERE do they say ANYTHING about how 'Dir en grey' could be (very accurately) translated into 'you in gray.' That translation seemingly had little-to-no meaning in the choosing of their name.
Not putting that theory down cuz it makes loads more sense than the band does. But the band's obviously set on 'greyish coin' so we'll let them think that it's 'greyish coin'
wink .
