What are some of your favorite political bands/songs?

I love "Revolution" by the Beatles...

I also have to admit that I admire Green Day when they released their album "American Idiot"... reminds people what punk was really about... the politics!!!

I also love the Clash and John Lennon.

That's all I can think of for the moment.

i thought green days foray into politics was retarded.

not to say that i'm opposed to political music, system of a down is one of my favorite bands, and i daresay they're the most political rock band out their since rage against the machine.

but american idiot was some foolish, hipster, oversimplified, liberal hogwash.

Maybe in your eyes, but I thought it was pretty cool that they got the kids involved in politics and in issues that mattered instead of worrying about their myspace profiles and so forth. Of course, they're not U2... but it wasn't a bad move, in my opinion.

As mentioned earlier, I'm interested in both John Lennon and System of a Down a great deal, and was into Green Day for a while, but before AI. I, personally, did not find much political content in its songs as its been hyped up to be. Had it been more intelligent and politically pumped, I'm sure I would've enjoyed it more. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the album and was obsessed with the band. I just got turned off from my phase because of the disgust I felt from observing other teenagers turn an otherwise great band into a fad boy band like Good Charlotte and Fall Out Boy.

If you haven't heard of them before, I highly suggest Anti-Flag, a REAL political punk band that while protesting and rebelling against the government, actually DOES something, by speaking out and donating their money to great causes, rather than just whining and getting paid. They're really intelligent, notoriously support Military Free Zone, among other equally great organizations, and write most of their songs, if not all, with some political message. And from what I've seen, they're not one of those punk bands obsessed with anarchy, which kind of turns me off.

I always liked The Clash.
I was a big Green Day fan, but American Idiot disappointed me. I thought that they seemed slightly different, and weren't nearly punk enough to rant about politics.
But that's just me.

"Revolution" by the Beatles

I'm not showing my age the Beatles were already broke up by the time I was born. biggrin

U2 has to be one of the best political bands of the last 20 years.

i love u2's early work, but their recent albums have been pretty icky to me.

anything after the early 90's has sucked in comparison

Leftover Crack, Choking Victim, No Cash, Dead Kennedys, Against all authority, Gil Scott-Heron, John Lennon, Citizen Fish, The Casualties, There are tons of bands that I love that are extremely political and those ones above are just a few I could think of off the top of my head

@Vinca: Yes, Rage is political, extremely XD

Whoa, no one's mentioned Rush? (the Canadian rocker trio, NOT the American windbag with an overpriced mic)

some of their political songs include, Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, Distant Early Warning (and most of that album), and several others. there's one about the oaks and maples which I can't remember the name which is overtly political.

Yes, I am showing my age on this one. I have gray hairs in there even if my avi doesn't show them yet.
