My boyfriend is half Nigerian, and I like to research about Nigeria, like foods, culture and what not. His father was born and raised there and my bf lived in Nigeria for a few years. While doing my research for him, it got me to thinking about where I come from. I know, like most African Americans, we don't know exactly where in Africa we come from. With some many countries and tribes, I don't want to generalize it. Does anyone know a way, good website where I can find out where/what country my slave ancestors are from?

Ooooh. Good luck with that. surprised I've been trying to research my family for years, and still haven't had much luck. On my dad's side, the family can trace itself back to the 1700s, when a couple of our ancestors were in a southern state (I forgot which one at the moment - maybe it was Virginia?)).

On my mom's side I could only go back as far as when they were in the deep south. It doesn't help that no one likes to talk, though. xp

The only websites I've come across are the ones in which you have to pay to get any sort of help. Though I did one time find an African American geneology website. One lady who might be a distant relative of mine even emailed me, but I forgot where I put the message.

That's going to be a hard search considering the fact that if your African-American then there is no guessing where your from.

I've been only able to trace myself to my great, great, great, grandfather.

Now if you were white, your family history would be easily traced due to the fact that theirs isn't screwed up by the malicious acts of another race.

But, excuse the mad ranting, you get lucky by talking to your family and then compiling the information.

I just found out that my great grandfather was Cuban. Wasn't expecting that.

I can only go back to my great great grand parents and that's only because I have access to old people who know all that and my family hasn't really moved around alot.
