Flowers had long been a point of fascination for Ati, who marveled at the speed at which they lived and bloomed and wilted and shed their seeds. He never seemed to change..or not since he had inexplicably become...solid. He grew no older, but simply watched as life moved around him. It had been quite awhile since he had been to see his Autumn, and he felt a bit guilty for that, since he knew that she felt responsible for him...but he couldn't stand to see her going on with everyday life, getting better, getting a day older with every passing day. Instead, he chose to wander...and somehow, now he'd ended up at the very place that he'd been told he originated from...the Happy Home itself.

As of this very moment, the boy was kneeling in the mulchy dirt of one of the Home's gardens, his fingers stained with hours of weeding. He'd spotted a surviving plant, which he thought perhaps might flower, come spring, and had felt an inexplicable sense of loss when he'd observed that the poor thing was being choked by weeds. He'd set immediately to freeing it, and just hadn't stopped. There was something satisfying about working with the earth...something mind-cleansing, and calming. Ati barely noticed as an hour went by, two..until, at last, he glanced up and noticed how late it had gotten, and how tired he was. Plopping down to sit in the dirt he'd been working in, Ati leaned back on his hands with a weary sigh. Perhaps a break, then.

Nothing happened in or around the old Home without knowledge of a certain red-headed apparition. It wasn't that he was terribly interested (not at all) in the life of what he affectionately called "crazy freaks" but he just couldn't manage to take a step without stumbling over one of the pathetic patients. Even now, with forehead resting against a dusty window while he was sourly staring at the weed-ridden gardens where no person in their right mind would want to go, he could see someone. "Figures," he mumbled to himself. "This is an asylum after all". His yellow eyes blankly ran up and down the boy and a scowl fixed itself firmly upon his face when Val realised just who he was. Ani. Or was it Ali? "Augh, who the hell cares?" he gruffly asked no one in particular before stepping his way through the wall and becoming solid on the other side of it, and noted with a smile that he did it in a nice patch of flowers he quite disliked.

Taking large strides to get closer to what he viewed as a disruption of his well-earned peace, he began to notice several things about the person in front of him. One, he appeared to be standing in a pile of weeds. Two, he appeared to be covered in dirt. "Well well.." he practically spat in disgust once he got close enough for the boy to hear him. "What have we here? I didn't think the Home hired gardeners."

Bringing a hand up to shade his eyes as he squinted at the person before him, Ati made a face as bits of dirt fell onto his face. When he registered who it was that had approached him, he quickly got to his feet and grinned. "Mister Val!" he exclaimed, moving as though he was going to hug him and then stopping. It wouldn't do to get Val all dirty. "I wasn't hired to garden..I just thought that perhaps this plant would like some room to grow without the weeds all choking it. I suppose maybe I got carried away.." Ducking his head sheepishly, Ati blushed faintly and shrugged. "No harm done...these gardens could use some care, after all."

Watching the boy- no, young man scramble to greet him, Val allowed his annoyed expression to relax slightly and almost failed to stop the corners of his mouth from tugging up into a smile as he remembered who this was. Ati, the one that seemed determined to become friends with him. Inwardly smirking while he recalled the previous times the two had met, he took care not to step on the piles of weeds and dirt littering the ground. As his eyes focused on the the friendly lilac face in front of him and noted the streaks of dirt on it, he couldn't help but commend the effort Ati had put into this.

Opening his mouth to return his greeting, he noticed the other hesitate to come closer and quickly snapped it shut again. So you don't want to get close to me, huh? He hardly heard Ati's gentle rambling as his temper flared. He was the one to close the distance between the two, barely resisting the urge the rip out the petty plant the dirty blonde had seemed so keen on protecting. His expression rapidly closed and he readied himself to do the only thing he seemed good at, lashing out: "Where's that girl of yours gotten to? Don't tell me she left her precious," he uttered this word with exceptional disdain, "boy all alone." Observing the face he was just a few inches away from, realisation dawned and his face split into a conceited smile. "Or perhaps you're here to get away from her? Tch tch."

For a moment or two, Ati just gaped at Val in disbelief, the brightness of his eyes fading just a bit with hurt. His face slowly fell, and for a moment it almost seemed as though he would outright cry- but then he seemed to get ahold of himself, and merely gave a guilty shrug. "Autumn will be alright without me for awhile.." he murmured vaguely, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot. Sighing sadly, he then peeked up at Val and smiled weakly. "I just needed some time to think...she can be a bit stifling, as much as I love her." Forgetting once more that his hands were all dirty, Ati then reached to brush a bit of dirt from Val's shoulder, thinking that perhaps he'd put it there, and winced as he left a rather larger dirty mark. "Sorry!"

"Think, you? That seems unlikely." Val remarked, showing exceptional disregard for the shift of the younger man's emotions with a harsh, derisive laugh. Truth be told, he felt a slight sting of annoyance when Ati mentioned loving that girl. Although taken aback by the sharpness of whatever he just felt, he decided to gloss over the strange feeling with another grimace at the younger man and deal with it later.

Yellow orbs surprisingly found that Ati was now the one moving closer to him, and quicker than Val could react he noticed a (rather dirty) hand was brushing his shoulder. Before Ati could pull away entirely, the redhead reacted by closing a hand around the other's wrist. Understanding the sentiment correctly this time he couldn't help but grin at the soft, adorable wince Ati let out. He shot a disinterested look at the grime on his shoulder, and said: "You haven't figured that out yet, have you? I guess that girl doesn't know everything.." Smiling at the younger man, Val's appearance flickered lightly as he turned non-solid and the dirt fell slowly through him. Upon it hitting the ground, he smugly smirked at Ati and turned stable again.

Flinching in surprise as Val grabbed his wrist, Ati stumbled yet closer to him. He half-expected Val to hit him, but was surprised to see that he was..smiling at him. Hesitantly, the younger friend smiled back, incredibly relieved that Val didn't seem to be angry with him for the dirt. Ati opened his mouth to comment on this, but then shut it again as Val flickered. Oh, right. Shrugging sheepishly, Ati scooted forward to give Val the hug he'd resisted giving earlier. "I guess getting you dirty doesn't really bother you so much, huh?" he asked softly, nuzzling his cheek against Val's shoulder before backing off a bit to grin at him. "How'd you do that anyway, Mister Val? Now that I'm solid, I just kind of seem to be...solid. Every once in awhile I'll not be paying attention and just kind of..phase through something..but if I try, I can't de-solidify."

(( Kinda long but I love Ati so xD <3 ))

With lips parted and eyes widened, Val fought a whole new wave of strange sensations as he was gently embraced by the smaller apparition. The skin underneath the cloth Ati was touching tingled and rapidly fired impulses at his brain to move away, away. Wha- This is ridiculous! Releasing quiet, shuddering breaths he stubbornly fought his fear surprise and let common sense win over, green clad arms awkwardly finding their way around the younger man. Though his rattled nerves calmed themselves his brain still busily whirred away, now eager to understand why he had reacted so violently to a simple hug and damning Ati for catching him off guard.

It wasn't until he felt the fur ruffle softly at his neck that he realised the one holding him was talking. He looked down to see the boy's purple face wearing a grin so sweet it would have definitely made his fillings pop, if Valycinte had had any. One of his hands reached up to idly fidget with Ati's shirt while he pondered the question. "Hmm.. I think I'll be able to teach you." he murmured, casting around to find something with which he could teach him how to shift phases. Very few people knew that Vis had been less meek in the first weeks of his treatment, and occasionally had taken his frustration out on Val. The apparition had spent the initial weeks of his becoming solid trying extremely hard not to get killed by that freakin' nutjob. There probably wasn't a bookcase in the Home left he hadn't been pushed through, but it had taught him well.

Scrunching his nose at these memories, he pulled out of the hug and and grasped Ati's arm, roughly dragging the younger man along to a barbed wired fence he had spotted. It marked the border between the asylum and sanity, and the rust told it had seemingly done so for a good few decades. Thinking it would probably take a large dose of shock to force the shift, the redhead wasted no time and harshly shoved the other at the fence. Ati would certainly crash into the spikes at the speed he was going, and Valycinte hoped the fear would make him let go of being solid and fly through the barrier.

As Val returned Ati's embrace, the latter's eyes widened, and he broke into a wide grin. Maybe Val was softening up, just a little..or at least, he hoped so. He just knew that deep, deep down (very deep down) that Val liked him, and just needed to be brought around. And that was exactly what Ati planned to do- bring him around.

Blinking curiously as Val wrinkled up his nose, Ati made a small surprised noise as he was none-too-gently yanked along behind Val- wherever he was going. "Ah...thank you!" he called (referring, of course, to Val's comment about being able to teach him), stumbling and trying to keep up. Where was Val taking him?

Then, Val pushed him. Not expecting this, Ati gave a surprised and slightly fearful cry, pulling up his arms to shield his face. He braced himself for impact...but impact never came. After a moment or two, he opened his eyes to find himself on the other side of a barbed-wire fence, his (non-material) foot still sticking through it. For awhile, he just stared dumbly, and then he looked up at Val. "You could have killed me." he whispered shakily, and then promptly broke into tears.

Distracted by the non-solid foot still on the other side of the fence, Ati's sobbing barely registered with Valycinte. He quickly made his way over to the wriggling shoe and grasped it before the younger apparition got over the shock and would accidentally embed his own foot into the rusted steel. Gently grasping it he pushed through the fence and appeared next to its owner, who, with a tear-streaked face and shaking body, seemed a little more upset than the redhead had intended him to be. "People don't die from being thrown at fences. Certainly not people like us," he retorted the accusation, having crouched down to comfort Ati with what he thought was a somewhat reassuring look. "I thought you wanted to learn how to do this? If you don't, tell me now so I can stop wasting my time with you."

Realising (perhaps a little late) that those words came out more harshly than he intended, a hand reached for Ati's cheek and wiped away the tears still running freely. "Look.. I learned this way, you know.. " he started uncomfortably, taking a seat next to his companion. "That guy, 'Vis', you've met him right? When I became solid, he.. " Eyes found their way skyward while Valycinte had a rare struggle with words, and it took a deep sigh before he continued. "He did things like this all the time. Shoving me at whatever was around. The fear of pain was what taught me how to shift.. I was hoping it would do the same for you." Shrugging, he turned back to Ati and quietly uttered something he was reluctant to say. "I don't know any other way."

Still sniffling, Ativan recoiled at Val's apparent anger with him. It barely registered with him that his foot was being pushed through the fence the rest of the way, although once it was, he sat up and hugged his knees to his chest. "I do want to learn.." he replied softly, flinching slightly as Val reached for him. However, he relaxed shortly after, rubbing his cheek against the hand that wiped his tears away.

After listening quietly to Val's story, Ati scooted closer to his now-seated companion, putting an arm around his waist and humming softly in sympathy. "I understand now," he murmured, "I didn't think that Mister Vis would do something like that..that must have been awful for you. Did you ever..not shift in time?"
