Before we begin, there are a couple things I need to say. First off, this was co-written with my friend. The ideas as well as the actual writing are a combination of our work. Second, if you have not yet seen at least around episode 55, then this will contain spoilers. With that being said, I hope you enjoy our fanfiction!

Prologue

"Oh, hell no. No, no, no. Absolutely not. It's bad enough I was forced into this abomination" here, a very agitated Ikkaku Madarame pointed at the white Captain's coat he now wore over his black hakama. "There is no way I am letting either of you come near me with makeup!"
He glared at the young man and woman standing before him.

The young woman, a short, curvy thing with long black hair and green eyes batted her long eyelashes at Ikkaku.

"Aw, come on", a giggle. "Captain Madarame. You'll look beautiful. And I have oils to make your head even shinier." She clutched her sides and doubled over in a fit of laughter.

"Ayumu's right, Ikkaku. And a little concealer would hide those dark circles under your eyes" the young man offered.

Ikkaku gaped at his best friend, Yumichika Ayasegawa, as if the man had spouted extra arms. Actually, he would have been less surprised to see Yumichika with extra arms. Maybe then he would do something somewhat useful. Like strangle who ever had had the brilliant idea of making him become a captain to begin with.

"Do you honestly think I care about dark circles under my eyes?", he demanded.

At that, the girl, Ayumu Hashiba, proceeded to laugh harder.

Ikkaku was stopped from getting really violent by the entry of another young woman, this one average height and very thin. Like Ayumu, she had long hair, but hers had more length and was red, and she had hazel eyes. She had a clueless expression on her face, as though she was not sure where she was, what she was doing there, or even who the strange people around her were.

Ikkaku pointed at her.

"And what is her problem. She has been walking around in a daze since she got reassigned here!"

"Maybe because she is still in shock-you are now the scariest captain in all of soul society, surpassing even Kenpachi and Captain Kurotsuchi", Ayumu said.

The redhead, Kaori Machida, smiled broadly at them.

"I'm not in a daze", she said. "I came here to tell Captain Madarame I have decided to call him Captain Baldy."

Yumichika and Ayumu fell over each other, hysterically laughing. Ikkaku walked over to the pair, the vein on his forehead throbbing. He grabbed Yumichika by the collar of his hakama and hoisted the considerably smaller man to his feet. Ikkaku smashed their heads together. Without so much as a groan, Yumichika's eyes slid shut and his weight slipped from Ikkaku's fingers. He crashed to the floor, unconscious, a bruise already forming on his temple.

Ayumu immediately stopped laughing. Kaori's eyes got wide.

"You killed the pretty boy!", Kaori cried.

"He's not dead", Ikkaku said, glaring at his best friend, who lay twitching on the ground. "However, you will be dead the next time you mention "Captain Baldy. Consider this your warning."

Kaori gulped and ducked behind Ayumu. She was sure she could see smoke coming from her new captain's ears.

"I want to go back to Captain Unohana now..." she muttered.

"I want to go back to Captain Kyouraku now..." Ayumu added.

"Quit whining", Ikkaku growled at them. "I want to go back to Kenpachi-you don't always get what you want."

Ikkaku left the women and his unconscious friend behind, ready to rip off his new coat and throw it into a fire. He'd gotten too into his fight back in the human world and had revealed the secret that, up until recently, only he, Yumichika, and Renji had known about. Revealing it had resulted in exactly the fate he'd feared-he was forced into a captain's position.

Under normal circumstances, a lieutenant would take over their captain's responsibilities if the captain was unable to do so. Kira and Hisagi had officially been promoted to captain status, at least temporarily, in their captains' absences. The problem was with the fifth squad. Aizen had deeply wounded his lieutenant, Hinamori, both physically and emotionally. While the physical wounds had healed, the emotional ones would not. Commander General Yamamoto had decided Hinamori was simply not ready to take over Squad Five duties-or even remain on the 5th squad. Instead, she'd been sent to act as lieutenant to Hisagi for Squad Nine, leaving 5th Division with no captain or lieutenant.

He sighed at his foolishness. He should have known Yamamoto would be looking for new captains and lieutenants and revealing he could achieve bankai would attract attention. And he'd gotten Yumichika dragged into the mess by refusing to work with someone he didn't know. He'd been hoping to make Yamamoto rethink his decision and pick someone else for captain by being difficult. Instead, he'd been forced into the loathed position anyway and doomed his friend to be condemned with him-he wasn't fooled for one second by Yumichika's false smiles and assurances it was alright. They'd been friends far too long for that. His friend was no happier with the arrangement than he was.

However, Yamamoto had not been content with ruining just their lives, oh, no. He decided it was time for some people to switch squads. This left him stuck with not just Aizen's former bunch, but new additions as well, none of whom seemed to like him except for the two girls he'd just left behind. Kaori, who had been transfered over from the fourth division, hadn't really been with them long enough to hate him, though Ikkaku had his suspicions that Kaori was not capable of hating anyone. Ayumu, who had been transfered over from Squad Eight, had taken an immediate liking to them, especially after Yumichika had washed her hair with his special shampoo and then pointed out to her how shiny Ikkaku's head was. He recalled the pair staring at his head in awe until he'd threatened to shave their own heads while they slept.

“Captain Madarame!”

Ikkaku looked up at the sound of his name to see one of Yamamoto's messengers-he'd never bothered to learn their names-coming towards him.

“Urgent news from Commander General Yamamoto, Sir”, the messenger said, handing the sealed document to Ikkaku.

Ikkaku nodded. Maybe this time Yamamoto was going to require he wear a wig because drunken squad members (and Captain Kyouraku) kept mistaking his hairless head for the moon. Why not? He'd already single-handedly ruined his life that week. Why not humiliate him, too?

Ikkaku opened the message and read it. He sighed again.

Yamamoto was not requesting him to wear a wig, but his request was almost as bizarre. He was requesting Ikkaku choose two of his own squad members to don disguises and sneak into Hueco Mundo to spy on Aizen, Tousen, and Gin. He crumpled the note in his fist and wondered if he would have been better off if he'd let Kenpachi kill him during their first encounter.

Chapter 1: The Mission

Ikkaku woke up the next morning to someone urgently shaking his shoulder.

“Go away, Yumichika”, he moaned, flopping over and pulling his pillow over his face.

“Ikkaku, come on. You have to get up now.”

“And why would that be?”, Ikkaku demanded, not moving.

Yumichika sighed.

“Ikkaku, Captain Kurotsuchi is looking for your two squad members so he can make them look like Arrancar.”

Ikkaku bolted up then.

“Crap. I didn't even decide on who to send...”

“Send who where?”, a girl's voice asked.

Ikkaku and Yumichika both turned to stare at Ayumu, who stood in the doorway in a pink night dress, her hair in two braids. He remembered how Yumichika used to braid his own hair when it was long so it wouldn't tangle while he slept and once again wished Kenpachi had killed him.

“I got this bizarre order last night to send two of my own to Hueco Mundo to spy on Aizen and his bunch...it's ridiculous...”

Ayumu's eyes grew so shiny they resembled emeralds more than they did eyes and scared the daylights out of Ikkaku. He had never seen a woman grow so excited at the thought of being a spy. She looked as excited as he himself felt during an especially gruesome battle.

“Hueco Mundo...Oh, please, Captain Madarame, let me go...please?”

“I think Commander General Yamamoto wanted men”, Ikkaku said.

Yumichika laughed.

“Why are you so eager to go to Hueco Mundo anyway?”, he teased. “Got a crush on one of the traitors?”

“Umm...I...uhh...”, Ayumu blushed. “Well...I do think Tousen's pretty cute...but that's not why I wanna go...”

“Great”, Ikkaku groaned. “So Matsumoto is in love with Ichimaru, Hinamori is in love with Aizen, and now we find out Hashiba is in love with Tousen.”

“You girls should get together and have a “We're in Love With the Traitors” party.” Yumichika joked.

“N-no”, Ayumu stammered. “I find him attractive. I'm not in love with him. I want to go because I want to prove myself.”

“Oh?”

Ikkaku's disgust turned into genuine interest.

Ayumu sighed.

“I know everyone here thinks I am useless and lazy because I came from Squad Eight. I wanted to prove I'm not...this is an important mission. It seemed like a good way to show I am more capable than what people believe.”

Ikkaku nodded.

“Very well. You may go.”

“Can I take Kaori with me?”

Ikkaku sighed. He really hated this.

“Sure. Why not. You and Yumichika go find Machida and inform her she is going on the mission with you.”

Ayumu grinned broadly and ran off to go change into her uniform.

“Do you think that's wise?”, Yumichika asked.

Ikkaku shrugged.

“Don't know. Don't care. I am going back to sleep.”

It was with those words that Yumichika knew if he valued his life it was time to leave.

Since being transferred to Squad 5, Kaori had felt rather out of place. Her new Captain was a fighter, and she wasn't even sure she was capable of battle. Her skills laid in healing, not harming. Now she was wandering aimlessly, trying to find something to entertain herself with. She almost didn't noticesomebody was traveling in the opposite direction of her, and had to stop short to avoid crashing into Rangiku Matsumoto.
"Ah, Vice-captain Matsumoto! I'm sorry!" She apologized with a bow of her head. "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

Matsumoto just smiled. "No harm done."

The vice-captain of Squad 10 had a bucket cradled in her arms and a couple paintbrushes resting on top. Dried baby blue paint was stuck to the side.

"What's the paint for?" Kaori asked, curious.

Matsumoto glanced down at the can in her arms.

"Oh this? Well, Captain Hitsugaya's room needed some repainting."

Kaori spoke without thinking who she was talking to.

"Captain Grumpy Pants?"

She quickly realized what she said and smacked her hands over her mouth. Matsumoto stared at her, wide-eyed. Oh boy, she was in trouble now.

The vice-captain's reaction wasn't exactly what Kaori had expected. After a moment, Matsumoto burst out laughing.

"C-c-captain Grumpy Pants! Oh, that's a good one!" She moved on hand off the paint to wipe tears from her eyes. "What's your name?"

"Kaori Machida, former Fourth division member. I was recently switched to Fifth division under Captain Madarame."

Matsumoto clapped Kaori on the shoulder.

"Kaori, eh? Would you like to come help me with the Captain's room?"

"Sure." Kaori grinned. She had nothing better to do at the moment, and vice-captain Matsumoto seemed fun.

A mischievous grin spread across the older woman's face.

"Oooh this is going to be fun! Here, take this to his room, I'll be right back!" After pushing the paint and paintbrushes into Kaori's arms, she turn around and sprinted down the corridor.

Kaori watched Matsumoto disappear beyond a corner before turning for Hitsugaya's room. He wasn't in his room. The young Shinigami put the can on the ground by one of the walls and waited for Matsumoto to return. Toshirou Hitsugaya's room was rather plain. A desk sat on the opposite side of the room, so that if the Captain were sitting down at it, he would be facing the door. A rather large, tall square window was behind the desk. Bookcases filled with books covered the wall on either sides of the desk, and a tan sofa sat in the center of the room. Kaori looked at the bucket of paint. It wasn't even the same color as the walls. Why would Matsumoto have gotten blue paint?

Before Kaori could think about it any further, Matsumoto walked into the room with several bags of stuff.

"Okay, we are all set now!" She dropped the bags on the floor next to the paint.

"What is all that for?" Kaori asked, pointing to the bags.

"Well just look at this room! So boring! I decided to brighten it up a bit!" Matsumoto giggled and pulled out a video tape. The words "Bugs Bunny" were written across the sticker. "Now, I'll get this stuff in order, and you can begin painting!"

Kaori giggled. "Okay!"

After laying some paper down so that she wouldn't paint the floors blue on accident, she began her work on Hitsugaya's walls.

"Captain Hitsugaya doesn't know you are doing this, does he?"

"Nope!" The vice-captain was setting up a television and VCR so that it could be seen from the sofa and desk. "He won't admit it, but he loves cartoons!"

After that was wired up and the Bugs Bunny tape put inside the VCR, she walked over to the bookcase holding a stack of manga.

After about fifteen minutes of painting the walls and sticking manga on the bookshelves and desk, another Shinigami captain walked into the room. Juushirou Ukitake's dark eyes scanned the room.

"What's going on in here?"

Matsumoto looked up from the Donald Duck bobble head she had placed on the desk.

"Ah, captain Ukitake! We are just redecorating Captain Hitsugaya's room!"

Ukitake glanced over the room again before speaking.

"Mind if I help?"

"We'd love to have you help! Right, Kaori?"

Kaori nodded. "Of course!"

The white-haired Shinigami's look of confusion turned into that of excitement!

"Wonderful! I have all this candy I've been meaning to give him!" He pulled two large bags of candy from somewhere in his robes and held them up with a large grin.

Kaori hopped down from the ladder she had been using to reach a higher portion of the wall she was painting and rummaged through one of the bags Matsumoto had brought in earlier.

"Ah-hah!" She ran over to the desk and placed a clear bowl down near the bobble head doll. "A candy dish!"

For the next forty-five minutes, the three Shinigami bustled about putting the finishing touches on Hitsugaya's room, taking a break in between to watch cartoons and snack on some candy. None of them even stopped to think how Hitsugaya would react to seeing his room redone in such a childish fashion.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Where is she?”, Yumichika questioned. He and Ayumu had just visited divisions Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine, all with no luck.
“Do you think there's any chance of her being in Tenth?”, Ayumu asked.

Yumichika opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted by the sound of screaming.

“HELP US!!!! HE'S GOING TO KILL US!”

“That was Kaori!”, Ayumu cried.

“And it looks like Captain Hitsugaya is chasing her...”, Yumichika observed.

The two black-haired Shinigami blinked as not one, but two redheaded women came rushing past them. Hitsugaya was in fact chasing them, Hyorinmaru in his hands. What their crime was, however, was unclear, as all they could make out was “blue paint” and “cartoons”.

Yumichika knew he was probably risking his life by doing so, but he couldn't let Hitsugaya kill one of his squad members. He grabbed the back of the young captain's coat.

“Captain Hitsugaya, please calm down.”

Hitsugaya glared at Yumichika.

“Better. Now please tell me why you are chasing your own lieutenant and one of my squad members?”

Hitsugaya drew in a deep breath and appeared to calm down, though Yumichika could still see the anger flashing in his eyes.

“They painted my room, replaced my things with childish trinkets, have bugs bunny cartoons playing in my room, and, most insulting of all, put a gigantic toy box at the foot of my bed...”

At this, Ayumu and Yumichika both burst out laughing. Hitsugaya looked ready to kill them both.

“Sorry, sorry”, Yumichika said, wiping tears from his eyes. “But I can't let you kill Machida. She and Hashiba here have a very important mission.”

Hitsugaya nodded and allowed Yumichika to whisk Kaori away.

“What's our mission?”, Kaori asked once they were safely away from Hitsugaya.

“Well, you two have to see Captain Kurotsuchi first. He needs to make some modifications to your bodies to allow you to enter Hueco Mundo looking like Arrancar...”

Both girls stopped walking and stared at him.

“Modifications?”, Ayumu demanded.

“Well, yeah...all Arrancar have holes in their bodies...and bones on them...The bones are remnants of their hollow masks...that is about all we know, but that should be enough to give you decent disguises.”

“...Holes in us...”, Kaori gasped.

Ayumu's eyes were huge and round.

“Bones on us...”

The girls looked at each other in horror.

“Won't that hurt!?”, Kaori whimpered.

“I'm too pretty to be mutilated!”, Ayumu shrieked.

Yumichika sighed and grabbed them by the backs of their collars.

“You volunteered for this, Hashiba.”

Ayumu fell silent and allowed Yumichika to drag her. She could feel Kaori's eyes burning into her. Somehow she had the feeling that her companion wished for nothing more than her death at this moment.

Chapter 2: Disguises

“AHHHH! WHAT DID YOU DO TO US!?”, Ayumu's scream resounded through the halls of Mayuri Kurotsuchi's lab. “IT'S HIDEOUS!”
The short young woman lunged at the creepy 12th division captain only to be intercepted by Captain Kurotsuchi's lieutenant and daughter, Nemu.

“Miss Hashiba, please, sit down and remain calm. You are going to rip your shoulder.”

Nemu guided Ayumu back into the small room she and Kaori were supposed to be recovering in and helped her settle comfortably in her bed. She pushed her braid over her shoulder and exited the room, leaving the two girls to themselves.

Ayumu glanced over at Kaori. The younger girl kept pulling her left sleeve off her shoulder, staring at her wound. She wore a look of disgust on her face as she kept slipping a finger into her new hole and quickly jerking it out.

“At least it doesn't hurt”, she told Ayumu. “Disgusting, yes. But it doesn't hurt.”

Ayumu glanced at her own wound-hers was on her right shoulder, slightly higher up than Kaori's and noticeably larger. She had to give Mayuri credit-he was through in both his research and his work. The large tubes that held their holes open were hardly visible unless one stared directly into the wound the way she was doing now. It was kind of fascinating to be able to look at her shoulder and see clear through to the other side of the recovery room. She sighed and leaned back in bed, already bored. She hated sitting still for any period of time.

“Hey, what's this?”, Ayumu asked, reaching over and picking up a book off the table between her and Kaori's beds.

“Oh. Lieutenant Ayasegawa said the Arrancar have Spanish-sounding names. I was looking for a code name, but I don't know what to pick.”

“Hmmm...”, Ayumu thumbed through the book. “I think” she said slowly. “the best thing to do is pick a word that means the same thing as our first names and string it with a word of random meaning.”

“Random how?”, Kaori asked. “Because my names mean fragrant and I don't want to be a fragrant house or something weird like that.”

“How about flower?”, Ayumu asked. “Fragrant Flower.” She looked up the words. “Fraganica Flor...Ohh. That's pretty!”

“Fraganica Flor”, Kaori repeated the “name.” “That works.”

Ayumu continued to look through the book.

“Aha! I found mine!”

“And what might that be?”, Kaori asked.

“Caminar Honrado.”

Ayumu practically sparkled.

Kaori picked up the dictionary Ayumu had just put down and looked up Honrado. She already knew Ayumu's first name meant walk.

“To walk righteous?”, she questioned. “Are you TRYING to attract Tousen's attention?”

“Better this than Ichimaru's”, Ayumu chirped brightly as she lifted her arms over her head and stretched them. Her face suddenly contorted in pain and her eyes filled with tears. “Ow...”

Kaori sighed and got out of bed. She pulled Ayumu's sleeve down and put her hands over the older girl's wound.

“Didn't Lieutenant Kurotsuchi warn you to take it easy?”

“I forgot.”

“Has anyone ever told you you are weird?”, Kaori asked.

Ayumu smiled.

“Yes...but I am sure you'll be singing a different song when we get there...”

“Do you know something I should?”, Kaori asked. She carefully pulled Ayumu's sleeve back onto her shoulder.

“Well”, Ayumu looked at her hands. “Captain Madarame came to visit me while you were having surgery and I was waiting for mine. He encountered a few Arrancar and told me about them-there was a guy who turned pieces of his anatomy into spikes...and he said there was this giant of a man who had the IQ of a vat of ice cream...Oh, and some blond kid Lieutenant Matsumoto didn't even want to fight. Supposedly all he did was groan and drool on himself.”

Kaori blinked.

“Remind me to hurt you later for volunteering me for this suicide mission.”

Ayumu opened her mouth to speak, but quickly closed it again as Mayuri and Nemu returned. Both of them carried a white cloth bundle in their arms. In addition to the cloth, Mayuri was carrying what looked like an Egyptian headdress, except it was made out of bone. Teeth dangled where beads should have been. Nemu carried with her a tiara, smaller and more delicate than the headdress, but no less grotesque. Kaori lifted her good arm to her face to mask her look of disgust.

Ayumu jumped off her bed.

“What are those? They look kind of cool.”

Mayuri gave her a rare smile. Finally someone who appreciated his science!

“These are your hollow masks-all Arrancar have remnants of their masks on their heads or faces in some fashion...”

Ayumu wasn't paying him any mind. She'd taken the headdress from him and was dancing around the room in such a way that Kaori was sure she would rip her shoulder again.

“Look at me. I'm an Egyptian goddess.”

Mayuri glared at the girl. She stopped dancing.

“Sorry”, she murmured, trying to pull the headdress off. She was astonished when it refused to come off her head-she might as well have yanked on her own hair. Her eyes widened. “What is wrong with this thing!?”

“As I was saying before you interrupted me, you stupid girl, the Arrancar have remnants of their hollow masks on them in some form. These do not come off. So naturally, I had to find some way to make your “masks” stay on.”

Panic shot in Ayumu's eyes.

“I'm going to be stuck like this forever!?”

Mayuri snorted.

“As amusing as that would be, and as much as I would enjoy that, I have to find a way to remove it or the Commander General will cut my research funds. Sadly when you get back, I will have a way to remove the masks.”

Ayumu breathed a sigh of relief.

Nemu handed the tiara to Kaori, who reluctantly put it on her head.

“I feel ridiculous”, the redhead moaned.

“Aw. You look beautiful. Like a Gothic princess”, Ayumu teased.

Kaori shot her partner a look.

"At least I don't look like the Egyptian Queen of Death," she taunted back with a grin.

The smile faded when she looked into a mirror and poked at her new accessory.

"Not being able to take this off is going to be a pain."

Now it was going to be even more painful if she happened to bump her head on something. Good thing she wasn't very clumsy.

"Well, my job is done." Mayuri said with a huff.

He was clearly upset at the two girls' reactions to his hard work.

"You'd think they would be more grateful!”, he muttered to himself as he walked out the door.

Nemu made her way to the doorway, following her Captain, but stopped and turned to the two girls.

"When you are ready, head to the Squad 5 barracks. You'll be escorted and given instructions from there."

After a small bow, the girl headed out the door.

Ayumu was ready to head out.

"Alright, let's get going then!"

Kaori frowned.

"Are you sure? Don't you want to rest some more?"

"Nah, let's just get going."

"You aren't going to rip your shoulder again, are you? Because if you do, I'm not letting you leave this room until you can handle it."

"Don't worry, I'm fine."

With a shrug, Kaori followed Ayumu out of the room where they met up with two unranked Shinigami of their squad. They received many strange looks on their way to their barracks, some of them disgusted, others totally confused. If it wasn't for the fact they were being escorted by Shinigami, they most likely would have been attacked. At least they knew their disguises were good.

They were met at the barracks by their current and former Captains. Unohana, Kyouraku, Nanao, and Yumichika smiled at Kaori and Ayumu. Even Ikkaku had a slight grin on his face. He seemed proud that it was two members of his squad that were on the mission.

Though she was happy to see them, Kaori was confused as to why they were all gathered here.

"Why are you all here?"

Unohana gave her sweet smile.

"To see you off, of course."

Kyouraku clapped Ayumu on her good shoulder.

"I know you'll do well Ayumu!"

"Machida!"

Kaori looked around for the voice that called her. She had a feeling she knew who it was.

“Hana!"

Hanataro Yamada was running down the hall toward them. He didn't quite make it before he tripped and fell face down onto the floor. Kaori shook her head and chuckled.

Hanataro got back up, his cheeks slightly pink from falling in front of everybody.

"Are you really leaving to spy on Aizen?"

Kaori nodded. "Yep. Ayumu and I are going to gather as much information as we can."

The young male Shinigami looked worried.

"What if something happens?"

"Don't worry, we will be careful." Kaori said with a reassuring grin. Though, honestly, she wasn't sure if they would ever make it back to Soul Society.

"Make sure you come right back if you think are going to get caught!"

"We will." Kaori nodded and hugged her friend.

Back when she was in Squad 4, she and Hanataro had been close friends. Most of the other Shinigami enjoyed picking on Hanataro, though she couldn't see why. He was one of the kindest people Kaori had ever met. She wasn't very intimidating herself, but she'd managed to chase off some Shinigami picking on him before she was transferred over to Squad 5. She hated it when people took advantage of him. Hanataro deserved better.

"So, you guys all set now?" Ikkaku asked.

Ayumu and Kaori both nodded in response.

Nanao pushed up her glasses.

"I'm sure you will do well. You are an intelligent girl, Miss Hashiba, and I'm sure you're friend isn't lacking either."

Ayumu grinned.

"Thanks Lieutenant Ise."

Captain Unohana hugged both girls.

"Be careful."

"We're counting on you." Ikkaku said, looking from Ayumu to Kaori.

Yumichika leaned closer to Ayumu and whispered, "When you get back, we can put make-up on the Captain while he sleeps."

This made Ayumu giggle.

"I'll be looking forward to that."

The group watched as the two girls vanished through the large door that would lead them to the real world.

Ikkaku sighed: two of the very few members of his squad, if not the only two, who actually somewhat
liked him were gone from Soul Society. He could only hope they would return alive.

Chapter 3: Hueco Mundo

Kaori and Ayumu stepped through the door Ikkaku had opened for them and found themselves enveloped in white light. As the two girls walked, the light in front of them grew brighter and brighter, until it reached the point where they thought they would go blind. A doorway appeared before them with double-lattice doors. The doors slid apart, and the girls stepped into the human world.
Kurakara Town was quiet and calm, totally oblivious to the complete annihilation it would suffer if Aizen was successful in his plans. It was yet another reason he had to be stopped, and why Ayumu and Kaori needed to succeed in their mission.

It wasn't very hard for the girls to find Urahara's shop- the doors Ikkaku opened for them led them
directly behind the building. A man in wooden sandals and a green and white striped hat spotted the girls before they could make their way to the front of the shop. Ayumu and Kaori immediately recognized him as Kisuke Urahara.

"Ah, you made it!" He said, waving his fan at them. “Quickly, come this way!"

The two girls walked forward, and Urahara quickly ushered them through the door, closing it behind them. He looked them both from head to toe and grinned. "I see Captain Kurotsuchi did well on your disguises! Well, no time to waste, follow me."

Before either of them could respond, the ex-twelfth division Captain led the Shinigami to the back of his
shop. A large square piece of the floor came up, and he slid it off to the side. A ladder leaned up against
the side, leading down to a secret room of sorts.

"Ladies first." Urahara said, stepping aside to let the girls down first. Ayumu climbed down, followed by Kaori, and finally Urahara.

Both Shinigami gaped in amazement as they reached the ground. It didn't look like a room at all. In fact, if Kaori didn't know any better, she'd have though they were outside. The place was huge. Dirt covered every inch, and large rocks were scattered all over the place.

"Like it?" The shopkeeper asked, grinning at the girls' expressions.

"How does it fit under the shop?" Kaori asked.

Urahara either didn't hear her question, or ignored it.

"Well, let's get this started, shall we?"

He was suddenly standing on a wooden plank that stuck out from one of the large rocks. Bending down on one knee, he held his cane in his left hand and began to chant.

"My right hand is the stone that bridges worlds. My left hand is the blade that binds reality." The hand
he held on his cane began to glow with a blue aura. "The black haired shepherd is hung from a chair.
Stratus clouds come, and I strike down the ibis!" As he concluded, the aura shot a beam of blue light at
another wooden plank across from him. A ripping noise tore across the sky as an eye-shaped portal seemed to unzip in the air.

Kaori and Ayumu stared into the void .

"That's the same way the Arrancar get about, right?" Ayumu asked, not taking her eyes off of it.

"That's correct. It's known as Gargantua. There are no paths in there however, so you'll have to use the
spirit particles to make your own, but being Shinigami, that shouldn't be a problem for you."

"Thanks, Urahara." Kaori said.

"Be careful now! Aizen's a tricky one!" Urahara called as the girls jumped through the Gargantua. After they were through, it closed back up.

The shopkeeper frowned. He was rather skeptical about the whole mission. Surely Aizen wouldn't fall for such a trick. Their disguises were almost perfect, and the girls would probably do well, but they were trying to pull a fast one over the man who fooled and betrayed all of Soul Society. That was probably the reason those two girls were chosen. He didn't recognize them, and they must have been unranked Shinigami. Soul Society wouldn't send their higher ranked members on such a crazy mission. He hoped the two girls' hard work wouldn't be in vain.

Kaori and Ayumu were surrounded by nothing but spirit particles. Neither of them had a very difficult time creating a path for themselves.

"What do you think is going to happen when we get there?" Kaori asked. Now that they were actually
headed to Hueco Mundo, she was extremely nervous.

"I'm not sure" Ayumu answered. "Whatever happens, just make sure to keep up your disguise. Don't forget: you are Fraganica Flor, and I'm Caminar Honrado."

Kaori nodded and took a deep breath to calm herself. If she was nervous when they got there, the Arrancar were sure to notice something wrong.

It got darker and darker as the girls traveled on. Though Kaori tried keeping herself calm, she couldn't
help but feel scared. Never would she imagine she'd be on such an important and dangerous mission. The smallest slip could lead to both their deaths. If she blundered, she have to make sure not to take Ayumu down with her. She'd never forgive herself if that happened.

Ayumu was a bit nervous herself, but she was determined. She'd taken the mission, and she was going
to succeed. She was going to prove herself.

A small cracking noise broke Ayumu out of her thoughts. Before she could figure out what happened,
the path behind her gave way. Kaori screamed. Ayumu turned around in time to see her partner fall.

"Kaori!"

She made a grab for Kaori's hand, but the girl had already fallen too far. Ayumu's eyes grew wide in terror as Kaori vanished into the endless abyss below. Hopefully Kaori would be able to catch
herself somehow and create another path. Maybe she should- another crack sounded, and the edge of the path Ayumu was on shattered. The Shinigami screamed as she plummeted.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A low groan issued from Kaori. She was lying stomach-down on a cold, stone floor. What happened? She had fallen. The path below her had given out under her feet. The girl shot up and looked around. She didn't recognize her surroundings at all. Was she in Hueco Mundo? "Caminar?" She called out softly, not wanting to use Ayumu's real name in case she really was in Hueco Mundo.

Ayumu wasn't anywhere in sight.

Kaori sighed and got to her feet, brushing herself off. She must have blacked out after falling. Hopefully she hadn't been passed out for too long. Though, she imagined if she was out for a while,
somebody would have found her. With a sigh, she decided to walk around and try to find somebody.

She hadn't made it far down the corridor before somebody turned the corner. An Arrancar stood before
her. His skin was even lighter than her own, and his ebony hair only made it look more pale.

"Who are you?" He asked.

"Fraganica Flor." Kaori didn't trust herself to say anymore than that. She feared her voice would give
away the fear she was holding down.

The Arrancar wasn't all that tall, but he was intimidating nevertheless. The remnants of his hollow
mask formed a sort of half-helmet on the left side of his head, a horn that curved up stuck out just above the center of it. A small hole was carved into the base of his neck. His mouth seemed set in a constant frown, and his piercing green eyes bore into her hazel ones.

"Follow me."

Kaori kept her mouth shut and obeyed. The Arrancar led her down the corridor and into a rather large central room. A man sat on a large throne, overlooking the room.

The Arrancar got down on one knee.

"Master Aizen."

Kaori could barely hide her shock at the mention of Aizen's name. He looked completely different. This wasn't the kind, fatherly Captain Aizen she knew of. No, this was the true Aizen.

"Ulquiorra? What is it?" Aizen asked, glancing over at Kaori and then back to the Arrancar.

"I found this woman roaming the corridors aimlessly. She said her name was Fraganica Flor. I thought you'd like to know about it."

Aizen turned to face Kaori. His expression told her he wanted an explanation.

"I got lost." She didn't even have to lie. Of course, it wasn't the whole truth, but she certainly had been
lost.

Sousuke Aizen looked at her for a moment and smirked.

"Gin must be playing with the corridors again. I told him to stop doing that, the lesser Arrancar tend to
get lost. Well, lesser with the exception of Yami."

He got up from his throne, and Ulquiorra stood up as he walked by.

"Were you trying to get somewhere?"

"Well...I was looking for somebody." Another half-truth.

"Hmm..." Aizen seemed to be examining her again. "Very well. Ulquiorra, Fraganica, come with me."

Ulquiorra did as he was told. Kaori was rooted to her spot for a moment, intimidated by the two. The
Arrancar threw her a look and she immediately followed, falling into step beside him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Ayumu moaned and peeled her eyes open...what had happened? Everything rushed back to her in a flash and she jumped to her feet. Where was Kaori? She really hoped her partner wasn't hurt...
“Outta my way, Ulquiorra, I am ******** pissed off right now...”

Ayumu bit her lip as a young man around Kaori's age knocked her to the ground. He'd hit her still-sore hole, but she was determined not to cry. The man stopped and stared down at her, his bright blue eyes bearing holes into her.

“You're not Ulquiorra.”

“No, I'm not. My name is Caminar Honrado-or just Cami for short.” Ayumu did her best to hide her fear. This guy was terrifying! Though he did seem to be calming down, Ayumu was afraid to know who this Ulquiorra person was. It was obvious the man hated this Ulquiorra-he'd been ready to rip her head off when he'd confused her for the person.

“Why are you here?”, the blue eyes were once again ripping holes in her. “Only the Espada and their faccions are permitted in these quarters.”

“Uhhh...”, Ayumu stammered. “Lord Aizen-”

The blue-haired young man drew his blade.

Ayumu squealed and rolled out of his way. She leapt to her feet and instinctively blocked her face with her arms.

“Grimmjow”, a strong voice interrupted them. Ayumu turned her head and saw Ichimaru and Tousen walking towards them. They flanked a third man with wavy brown hair-Ayumu assumed he was Aizen, but he didn't look like Aizen at all. Behind the trio walked Kaori and a pale youth with black hair and piercing green eyes.

“Lord Aizen”, the blue-haired man, Grimmjow, said.

“Grimmjow, drop your weapon. I have been looking for that young lady.”

Ayumu tried to hide her surprise. He was looking for her?

“You are Caminar Honrado, are you not?”, Aizen's cold brown eyes locked into her own.

Ayumu quickly fell onto bended knee as she felt she was expected to.

“Yes, sir. My humblest apologies for getting lost.”

“Don't worry about it. It's easy to get lost.”

Ayumu shivered and felt a bead of sweat roll down her neck. It was chilling. Aizen spoke in the same kind, fatherly tone he had during his days as fifth division captain, but his eyes were so cold she couldn't believe he was the same man.

“Stand up”, Aizen ordered.

Ayumu scrambled to her feet.

“Go stand next to Ulquiorra and Fragancia”

Ayumu didn't need to be told twice. She raced over to Kaori.

“I should have mentioned this at our meeting”, Aizen explained. “It has come to my attention that the Espada quarters could use some cleaning-particularly the quarters of Stark and Szayel Apporo.”

Grimmjow stared at the girls skeptically.

“So you got us maids?”

“If that is how you wish to look at it. Miss Fraganica Flor will be in charge of quarters one through five. Miss Caminar Honrado will have six through ten.”

“Lord Aizen”. Ichimaru spoke. “What about us? Our rooms could use cleaning, too.”

Aizen regarded the girls.

“Very well...you like redheads, right, Gin? Fraganica can assist you. Kaname, Caminar can assist you.”

“Wonderful”, Ichimaru said.

Tousen remained silent.

The girls both bowed.

“Yes, Lord Aizen.”

“Good. You may get to work.”

Grimmjow grabbed Ayumu's arm.

“Let's go, Woman. I have a lot of s**t that needs throwing out.”

Ichimaru guided Kaori away, grinning even more broadly than usual.

“My book collection needs organizing.”

The girls had no choice but to allow the men to escort them away.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“What is it, Gin?”, Aizen asked later that night after everyone else had gone to bed.
“I was just wonderin' why ya let those two in when it is so obvious they're spies.”

Aizen chuckled and waved a hand.

“Those women? They're harmless. Any one of our Espada could easily handle them. I am interested in what Soul Society is planning.”

“I almost pity that Caminar girl. You put her with Grimmjow, Szayel, and Yami.”

Aizen eyed his right-hand man.

“If I felt pity, mine would be for Fraganica, since she has to deal with you.”

A cruel smile passed over Aizen's handsome face. Ichimaru pouted.

“So mean.”

“And yet that smile of yours never leaves your face.”

“My smile must be like your paternal tone.”

Aizen rose from his throne and pushed his fingers through his wavy hair.

“I'm going to retire for the evening. It would be wise for you to do the same.”

“Do ya think Soul Society is plannin' anything?”, Ichimaru asked as he walked Aizen out of the throne room, to his bed chamber.

“I'm pretty sure they are-they did send those spies. Plus I don't think the Commander General is taking kindly to the fact that three captains just up and left.”

Ichimaru's grin just widened.

“And yet he had no idea we were planning anything before he left.”

Aizen chuckled and dropped his voice to a whisper so low Ichimaru had to strain to hear him.

“Don't make me remind you that we almost failed-we wouldn't have been able to do anything if Kaname hadn't agreed to join us...well, nothing short of killing him and that wouldn't have worked well since I was supposed to be the one who died. Two dead captains would have resulted in such high security measures even we wouldn't have been able to act.”

“You never did tell me how you convinced him”, Ichimaru dropped his voice so it was almost as low as Aizen's

“That is a story for another time, Gin.” The brown-haired man pushed open the door to his bedchamber and stepped inside.

“Goodnight, Gin.”

He shut the door as Ichimaru replied with “Goodnight, Sousuke.”

Aizen opened the door, just in time to see Ichimaru running down the hall towards his own room. He shut the door again and shook his head. He didn't really mind Ichimaru calling him Sousuke-not too much, anyway. He just hoped the strange, silver-haired man wouldn't make it a habit of using his first name. He shed his uniform and placed it on a chair and climbed into bed. He was asleep in minutes.

Chapter 4: Ichimaru's Fun and Szayel's Experiments

Being a spy in Hueco Mundo wasn't at all what Kaori had expected. She had been woken up nice and early in the morning to start cleaning Ichimaru's and the first five Espada's rooms while they had tea. Apparently, it was a daily ritual. The Espada, who were the top ten strongest Arrancar in Hueco Mundo, got together with Aizen, Tousen and Ichimaru for their tea and meetings. Kaori guessed it was Aizen's idea, he always did like his tea. Most of the cleaning was simple stuff. Having previously been in the 4th division, Kaori had a lot
of experience and could quickly and efficiently clean a room. It also helped that the Espada were out the first half of the morning having their tea and probably at a conference of some sort. One room in
particular, however, was a total disaster. The room belonged to an Espada named Stark. Not even Captain Kyoraku's room compared to it. The carpet had a large stain where it looked like a cup of tea fell and was never picked up. Dirty Espada robes were strewn across the room, making Kaori wonder how he wasn't prancing around naked. A pile of manga sat messily next to his bed. The blankets to his bed were a tangled mess, half hanging off the side of the mattress. She was surprised there weren't any Arrancar Cockroaches scurrying about. With a sigh, Kaori began cleaning the dirtiest room she'd ever stepped into. First, she gathered up the
laundry and piled it outside the door with the rest of the robes she had to wash afterwards. Stark's clothes alone easily made up half of what she had to wash so far. She doubted she would be able to get the tea stain out of the rug, but did what she could. Though you could still tell the carpet was stained, it didn't look quite as bad as before. The blankets were quite difficult to unravel, but halfway through Kaori gave up and threw them in the pile of laundry; they smelled pretty bad. She eventually found new ones in the mess she assumed was the closet, and made the bed. After the bed actually looked like a bed, Kaori arranged the manga neatly on the shelf they had originally belonged on. All in all it took a good hour just to tidy the place up. She was sure it wouldn't last long, but the Shinigami felt proud when she looked back at the now clean room on her way out the door.By the time she made it to Ulquiorra's room, he had returned from whatever it was the Espada had been
doing. He turned to face her when she walked in with his usual, emotionless expression.

"Here to clean?"Kaori nodded.

"If you want me to come back later, I can."

She didn't want to bother him if he was busy. She already learned to stay out of the Espada's way. "No, do it now."

The tone in his voice made it clear he though very little of her.

Ulquiorra waited in the doorway while Kaori did her job. Compared to Stark's room, Ulquiorra's was going to take no time at all. He was much more tidy, and appeared only to have what was absolutely necessary. There were only a couple robes to wash, and the bed wasn't a complete disaster. While she cleaned, Ulquiorra simply watched from the doorway. Kaori figured he was making sure she didn't touch anything she wasn't supposed to. It wouldn't have been such a big deal, if he wasn't constantly glaring with that same expressionless face. "I don't know what's worse, your constant glowering, or Ichimaru's constant grin." Kaori mumbled while she straightened the wrinkles out of the sheets. She knew she probably shouldn't have said that, but the two extremes really were annoying."Watch your tongue." Ulquiorra growled. "Just because you were assigned cleaning duties to the Espada does not make you are indispensable." Kaori wanted to snap back, but kept her mouth shut. For the sake of the mission, she had to put up with
it. The room was clean in no more than ten minutes, thanks to Ulquiorra's tidiness. Kaori bowed her head slightly as she made her way out the door.

"Excuse me, Ulquiorra." She grabbed the laundry basket and headed down the hall for her next destination. As she left the room,
she could feel Ulquiorra's gaze behind her back, making her shudder. The Espada seemed to be have been assessing her. Though he seemed like the type to do that to everyone, she couldn't help but feel he might be on to her. She'd have to watch her step around him especially if she didn't want to blow her cover. Ulquiorra's room had been the last one that needed cleaning, so Kaori made her way to the laundry room to wash all the dirty robes she had acquired from the six rooms she'd cleaned. She had made sure to clean Ichimaru's first, not really wanting to see him. Not only was she afraid he would discover she was really a Shinigami since he was once a Captain, but he just plain crept her out. Unfortunately, it seemed Ichimaru wouldn't have it that way. Before Kaori had even begun to wash the
laundry, the ex-Captain had caught up to her.

"Ah, Fraganica! Ya did a great job with the cleanin'!" "Thank you." Kaori answered politely, but keeping her eyes on the laundry she was washing. "Yer really good with it ya know. Don't think I've seen an Arrancar clean quite so quickly and
efficiently! Where'd ya learn that?"

Kaori shrugged. "Natural talent I guess. "

"Sousuke really does know how to pick 'em." Kaori had a bad feeling there was a double meaning to that. She didn't say anything in response, keeping focused on her cleaning. Something moving in the corner of her eye distracted her. She curiously looked over from one of Halibel's robes that she had been working on to see what it was.

"Is that..."

She leaned closer to get a look. At first it just looked like a piece of a hollow mask that had broken off, if that was possible. It was an oval shape about the size of Kaori's palm, with jagged edges. She then realized six long, black legs were sticking out, three on either side.

"A hollow cockroach?!" She squealed and jumped back.Ichimaru leaned down and let the bug crawl onto her hand. "What's the matter? Afraid of this little guy? He's harmless." He turned to Kaori and his grin grew. "Ya'd think ya never seen one before."

"I wasn't expecting it." She hadn't thought about her reaction to seeing the bug. She had shown surprise as well as disgust, and an Arrancar shouldn't be surprised to see any hollow like creatures in Hueco
Mundo.

"I hate bugs." She frowned. It was the truth though, she hated most bugs. "Aww, he ain't that bad. Take a look, he's kinda cute!" Ichimaru took a step forward, holding out the
hand the bug was on.Kaori took a step back in response. "No thanks." "But he wants ya ta hold 'im! C'mon!" Before Kaori could react, Ichimaru was right in front of her, holding the bug up to her face. It'd deep red, fly-like eyes looking right into hers. With a yelp, she fell back, tripping over her own feet and landing on her butt. Ichimaru laughed and let the bug back down on the ground. It scurried away to some dark corner of the
room. "Sorry 'bout that, I couldn't resist." He held out a hand, offering to help her up.Kaori just glared at him and stood up herself. "You aren't sorry."

"You're right, I'm not." Ichimaru just smiled at Kaori's death glare. "Well, just wanted ta let ya
know ya did a good job on the cleanin'. Keep up the good work!" Ichimaru clapped Kaori on the shoulder and left. Kaori sighed. She had a feeling the remainder of her days as an Arrancar would be torture.

Ayumu wasn't having much better luck. Her arm was throbbing from where Grimmjow had grabbed her. Didn't he know it was impolite to handle a lady so harshly? There were ugly, purple finger-shaped marks on her light skin-she really hoped no one would notice the bruises and marveled that her arm hadn't been broken. On top of the pain, she was slightly deaf after listening to Yami, the gigantic brute known as the tenth Espada yell and squish some poor girl into the wall. Ayumu had never seen such a thing in her life and didn't want to know what the girl had done to deserve such treatment. She had spent the next hour cleaning blood off the wall until she was finally dismissed. The good news was, she now knew what a fraccion was. Though knowing these Arrancar-these “Espada”-had people who worked directly under them made her wonder why they needed maids to begin with, not to mention she wasn't sure how long she would live if all of them had tempers like the ones Grimmjow and Yami displayed. On top of everything, her wound burned and itched, but she figured that was a good thing as it meant the hole was healing.

She came to a stop at the next room she was to clean and found herself staring at a sign that read:

“All who enter here are volunteering to be research subjects. Consider this your warning. -Szayel Apporo Grantz”

Ayumu placed her hand over her itchy, painful hole and hesitated outside-she'd had enough of being a science experiment to satisfy her the rest of her days. Her fingers fell into the hole and she almost whimpered. What kind of experiments would this Szayel Apporo Grantz do to her? She took a deep breath and pride eclipsed her fear-she had to withstand it. She knocked on the door more bravely than she felt and waited. There was some rustling on the other side and the door swung open. A young man around her own age gazed at her curiously.

Ayumu pointed to the sign on the door.

“Does that apply to people sent here by Lord Aizen to clean?”

The young man's lips twitched into a smile.

“That applies to everyone except Lord Aizen and his commanding officers.”

His voice was soft, pleasant-sounding.

“Well, darn”, Ayumu replied, looking into the strange orange eyes of the man she could only assume was Szayel Apporo Grantz. “It's kinda hard to clean if you are missing limbs-or toting a few too many.”

“Limb transplants don't work”, Szayel replied as he ushered Ayumu ahead of him into his lab. “All the ones I have attempted ended with the host bodies rejecting the transplant.”

“Suppress their immune systems first”, Ayumu murmured to herself.

“What was that?”, Szayel demanded.

Ayumu's hands flew to her mouth as she realized what she'd done. Shinigami had immune systems- Juushirou Ukitake's tuberculosis was proof of that-but what if Arrancar did not? She swallowed hard and pushed on-what was done was done.

“An Arrancar's immune system is really strong, isn't it? So naturally, it would be strong enough to reject foreign matter-but if you suppress their immune system first, the body would be able to adjust to the new addition.”

Szayel's unusual eyes widened behind the remnants of his hollow mask-a pair of square-framed glasses. He pushed a stray lock of pink hair off his face and stared at Ayumu for a moment before rushing eagerly to his desk where he pulled through his many files.

Ayumu blinked, amazed by his enthusiasm. “Is there anything you would like me to clean for you?”

Szayel glanced up from his work.

“No. You'll distract me. Just go.”

“You're welcome”, Ayumu muttered, but she smiled as she walked out. Not only had she learned one of the Espada was a mad scientist, but she had actually been of some use to him. She knew she probably shouldn't have been happy about helping Szayel with his crazy experiments, but she was. His eyes had glowed like a child's when he'd realized her advice could be useful. Her smile fell at the sound of Grimmjow's cursing.

Ayumu decided she did not want to know why Grimmjow was so angry-though if she had to hazard a guess, she would sum it up in one word-Ulquiorra-and hurried down the hall before he could see her. Grimmjow already seemed to hate her simply because she “reminded him of Ulquiorra”, a claim she found ridiculous. While it was true they both had black hair and green eyes, that was where similarities- both in looks and in personality-ended. She sighed. Men. They were all the same, even if they were a different species of man.

“Aha! There ya are. Getting kinda lax, ain'tcha?”

Ayumu recognized the lazy manner of speaking and turned around to face Gin Ichimaru.

“Commander Ichimaru”, she said, dropping down in a humble bow. Ichimaru just laughed at her.

“Don't look so frightened. I'm not gonna hurt'cha. I regret to say Kaname ain't feelin' too good and would like some tea brought to his room.”

His tone suggested he was not the least bit sorry that Tousen was feeling ill.

Ayumu released the breath she wasn't aware she was holding and climbed to her feet. She'd been so busy trying to get familiarized with the Espada that she'd forgotten she had been assigned to wait on Tousen, too.

“I'll get that tea for him right away, Sir.”

“See to it that'cha do”, Ichimaru replied.

Ayumu hurried into the Espada dining hall where a kitchen servant already had the tea prepared and waiting to be brought to Tousen's room. She picked up the tray and carefully brought it to Tousen's room. The last thing she wanted was to spill tea on herself.

“Commander Tousen?”, she called softly. “It's Caminar, Sir. I brought the tea you requested.”

“Come in. The door is open.”

Balancing the tray a little clumsily, Ayumu pushed open the door and meekly entered Tousen's room. The man was seated at his desk, a blanket draped around his shoulders, lightly running his fingers over a book. He was reading braille, Ayumu realized as she got closer to him. She felt a touch of pity for him, even though he'd never called attention to his blindness in any way during his days as captain. Then her pity turned to fear-she was Shuuhei's friend. What if Tousen somehow recognized her? She forced a deep breath and closed the rest of the distance to his desk. Shuuhei usually had been the one to visit her and she hadn't spent much time in the Ninth division. She had no reason to think he'd recognize her.

Ayumu set the tray down on Tousen's desk and started to pour tea into a cup for him.

“That's not necessary”, Tousen said.

Ayumu obediently backed away and let him serve himself. That was when she noticed one of the beads on the bottom of his loose braids was slipping off. Without thinking, she reached over and lightly tugged the bead up. She gasped and pulled her hand away.

“I'm so sorry Sir!”, she yelped. Would he hack her arm off the way he'd hacked off Grimmjow's? What had Grimmjow done to make this man hack his arm off anyway? If she took her arm back to Soul Society, would Mayuri be able to reattach it for her?

To her surprise, Tousen gave a soft chuckle and when he lifted his head she saw almost an affectionate smile on his face. Her heartbeat returned to normal as she realized he was not going to hack off her arm.

Before he could say anything, the door opened again and a young boy with blond hair entered awkwardly, carrying a bowl of...something. It smelled awful. He brought it to Tousen.

Tousen's face glowed and he truly looked affectionate. Ayumu marveled at the strength of his stomach. She wasn't even sick and the smell of whatever was in the bowl made her want to throw up.

“Wonderwice”, Tousen said “Did you make this all by yourself?”

The boy made a gurgling noise in affirmation. He rubbed his head on Tousen's arm like a cat seeking attention. Tousen gently ruffled the boy's hair.

Wonderwice tugged Tousen's hand and pulled it over to the spoon.

“You want me to try it, huh?”

Ayumu resisted the urge to run over and grab the bowl away. She'd promised Shuuhei she would try to bring Tousen back unharmed-she couldn't let him be poisoned. She watched anxiously as the man brought the spoon to his mouth and swallowed some of the concoction in the bowl.

Tousen returned the spoon the spoon to the bowl.

“Thank you, Wonderwice. Why don't you go see if they need help cleaning up the hallways?”

The boy gurgled happily and bounded out the door.

“Commander?”, Ayumu asked, creeping closer to Tousen. The man's dark cheeks looked faintly green.

Tousen handed the bowl to Ayumu and Ayumu was very glad Tousen was blind at that moment. Had the man seen what he had just willingly swallowed he probably would have died. Her stomach clenched.

“Caminar, return that bowl to the kitchen and tell the servants that the contents are extremely toxic.”

“Should I tell them to destroy the bowl, Sir?”, Ayumu asked. She knew she would not want to eat out of the bowl no matter how many times it was washed.

“That would be wise”, Tousen replied. He took a few sips of his tea.

“Do you need anything else, Sir?”

“No, that is everything. Thank you.”

Ayumu held the bowl as far away from her body as possible and proceeded to leave. She was almost out the door when Tousen said “Wait, Caminar.”

Ayumu froze.

“Yes, Sir?”

Tousen shook his head.

“Never mind. Go ahead.”

Ayumu exited the room and went down the hall.

“Caminar! Caminar!”

Szayel was flying at her at top speed.

“Woah!”, Ayumu cried as he went crashing into her, knocking the bowl of Wonderwice's concoction from her hands and sending it spilling over both of them. Blood red liquid covered their white uniforms. Ayumu gagged.

Szayel's lips twitched into a frown.

“What is this stuff?”

“Some kind of soup Wonderwice made for Commander Tousen”, Ayumu replied. “We are now covered in extremely toxic material-I think we're radioactive.”

Szayel laughed.

“We can change out of the robes in my lab...come on, I want to show you something!”

Ayumu had no choice but to let the pink-haired man drag her away.

Once they were in Szayel's lab and they had changed out of their uniforms into fresh uniforms of Szayel's, the pink-haired man showed Ayumu his notes.

“It's brilliant!”, he gasped. “Suppress their immune systems!”

Ayumu gulped. She didn't like the gleam in his eyes.

“I whipped up just the stuff-It's a medicine that will make the immune system horribly weak. I want you to be the one to test it for me.”

“I'm flattered, really...but I can't accept such an honor...”, Ayumu stammered. She could feel the blood rushing out of her face. She'd already been exposed to Tousen's cold. If he succeeded in weakening her immune system, she could potentially die. This was more than just letting him attach extra arms to her.

“Of course you can. It was your idea, you should test it!”

Szayel's smile had grown to the point where he put Ichimaru to shame.

“Really, I am flattered, but you should let one of your fraccions have the privilege...”

“So that's what it's about! Very well, I will ask Lord Aizen to allow you to be one of my fraccions!”

“No! That's not what I...”, Ayumu trailed off as Szayel went rushing from the lab at top speed. She sighed. It looked like she was going to be a science project.

Chapter 5: Tacos and Sake

Little by little, Ayumu was coming to the conclusion that she was insane. Surely she had to be-why else would she volunteer for a suicide mission and drag the only female friend she had on her squad along with her? She sighed and threw off her covers, using care not to be too loud. She didn't want to wake up Kaori, who shared the room with her. Her promise to Shuuhei and her determination to prove herself where the only two things that prevented her from abandoning the mission.

She dragged herself to her new bath chamber-the one she shared with the rest of Szayel's female fraccions-and endured a bath in ice-cold water. She desperately wanted to wash her hair, but her headpiece prevented that. She'd also considered hacking all her hair off, but she couldn't even do that because she had no access to her hair above her chin. Maybe a bob cut like Yumichika's would help-at least then the hair wouldn't be on her shoulders anymore. She washed up quickly and changed into a clean white robe-she liked that the arrancar were allowed to personalize their uniforms. She wore the sleeves to her uniform fitted and tied a green sash around her waist. After she'd gotten dressed she went back to her room and pulled out a pair of scissors tucked away in the drawer of her vanity table. Without stopping to think what she was doing, she hacked off her hair, watching her formerly long locks pool around her feet.

“Caminar?”, Kaori whispered sleepily. “What are you doing?”

“I feel disgusting”, Ayumu replied. “My hair is so filthy, it's nauseating.”

Kaori gave a nervous chuckle.

“We could potentially be killed and you're worried about how “disgusting” your hair is?”

“Easy for you to say-you can wash around your tiara. I practically have a cage on my head.”

“You're the one who wanted to be the Egyptian Goddess of Death”, Kaori pointed out.

Ayumu pointed at her brand-new mid-neck bob.

“Now I am Cleopatra, Egyptian Queen of Death.”

Kaori chuckled, glad to see her friend was in good spirits. Ayumu had been starting to show signs of serious illness the night before as a result of the experiments one of the Espada was conducting on her. Kaori had done her best to help Ayumu after the older girl had fallen asleep, but she knew she couldn't reverse the effects of the immune suppression forever. She sighed-she was still exhausted, but she'd spent far too long in bed. She suspected tea time with Aizen was already over, which meant she would have to endure another round of Ichimaru's pranks.

Kaori was about to go wash up and change when the sound of Ayumu's communicator going off caught her attention.

Ayumu's beautiful features twisted into a frown.

“Where did I put that thing?”

“You can't be serious-you lost your communicator!? What if one of them gets it?”, Kaori hissed, freaked out.

“Obviously it's in here if we can hear it”, Ayumu replied calmly. She dumped one of her bags on the floor, the contents scattering about the room.

Kaori stared in amazement as tubes of lip gloss rolled across the floor along with bottles of nail polish, pots and tins containing blush, foundation and eyeshadow, makeup brushes, tweezers, hairpins, and a whole slew of other beauty products came to a stop by her feet.

“Aha! Here it is!”, Ayumu said cheerfully, picking up her pink communicator from the floor with a grin.

“What took you so long to answer?”

Though Kaori had to strain to understand the words, there was no mistaking the voice of Shuuhei Hisagi.

“Ah, sorry”, Ayumu whispered. “I stuck my communicator in my makeup bag. What's up?”

“Not much. I have to keep this brief so Hinamori doesn't realize what I am doing. I was wondering if you've seen Tousen yet?”

Kaori came up beside her friend and saw Captain Hisagi's handsome face in miniature. Ayumu shifted the tiny hand-held screen so Kaori could see it better before continuing.

“I did see him, actually. He didn't seem any different, at least not to me...” Ayumu explained how the blond child, Wonderwice, had made Tousen soup and how Tousen had tasted it and then pretended to like it to spare the child's feelings.

Captain Hisagi breathed what looked like a sigh of relief to Kaori.

“Thank you, Ayumu. Komamura will be very relieved to hear that...” The young man drew a deep breath and shut his eyes. “And Aizen?”

“He is definitely the mastermind behind the plan”, Kaori confirmed.

“I figured as much, but thought I would ask. Hinamori's not taking it too well. Alright, I won't tell her this conversation took place. Your captain and lieutenant wish to speak with you so I will allow them to do that.”

“Right. Oh, and Shuuhei”, Ayumu said kindly. No longer was she speaking as a subordinate reporting to a superior, but as a friend addressing another. “Please get some sleep, Shuuhei. You look awful.”

“Right. Sleep. I'll see you when you get back”, Captain Hisagi replied dully. The screen went blank for a moment, only to be replaced by the faces of Captain Madarame and Lieutenant Ayasegawa.

“Hashiba”, Yumichika gasped. “Your hair...I like it”

Ayumu giggled.

“I knew you would.”

“Ok, Ladies”, Ikkaku said, his voice irritated. Clearly he still didn't like his new duties. “We're not here to talk about hair.”

“Of course”, Yumichika replied, his face suddenly growing more serious than either girl had ever seen it. “It seems one of the members of Ichigo's group has been kidnapped.”

“Why would someone kidnap one of Strawberry's friends?”, Kaori asked.

“We're not sure of that yet...”, Ikkaku replied. “But she's been missing for a while now. Commander General Yamamoto wants you to find out where she is being kept-it's Orihime Inoue that was kidnapped-and figure out what they are planning to do with her. That might help us get a better idea on what we need to do to prepare.”

“Wait...what?”, Ayumu asked, putting voice to the confusion Kaori herself felt. “There's a prisoner here? How come this is the first time hearing about her?”

“Probably because Aizen is keeping her secret for something. That is what we need you to find out.”

“Ok”, Ayumu said boldly. “You can count on us.”

“We won't let you down”, Kaori added.

Ikkaku smiled.

“I know we can count on you...I'm proud of you girls.”

“Awww...don't cry, Captain Baldy”, Kaori said, hiding a smile with her hand. It wasn't like Ikkaku could come to Hueco Mundo to kill her.

A vein throbbed in Ikkaku's head.

“I am going to kill you for that later, Machida.”

He stalked off.

“Oh, dear. The unranked Squad five members are going to get it now...”, Yumichika said cheerfully. “I will let you girls go now...and Hashiba. You lectured Hisagi about looking awful when you yourself look sick. Take better care of yourself. See ya later!”

With those words, the screen went blank. The girls looked at each other.

“Now what?”, Kaori asked.

Ayumu picked up some of the makeup off the floor.

“I have an idea...”, she said.

Kaori barely had time to blink before she was pushed into a chair and Ayumu went to work on her.

"What are you doing?!" Kaori complained after being pushed back into the seat.

"I'm doing your make-up, what do you think? Now hold still!" Ayumu reached into her large make-up bag and pulled out a pair of tweezers. She then began plucking Kaori's eyebrows.

Kaori winced. "Ouch! That hurts!"

"Oh, please." Ayumu rolled her eyes. "Compared to Captain Madarame's training, this should be nothing."

Ayumu did have a point. Before going through surgery, Ikkaku had put Kaori through some rigorous training. She was never taught how to fight, having been in the 4th division, and Ikkaku didn't want her going to Hueco Mundo without being able to defend herself. Since they had very little time to train, Ikkaku had made sure to work her until she could no longer lift her zanpaktou. It was torture, to say the least. Kaori had very little physical strength. Not only could she not land a single blow on her Captain, but she couldn't even defend herself from his attacks. She usually wound up tumbling back trying to defend herself. Once he struck harder than he had meant to and knocked her back into the wall.

"Get up and fight like a man!" Ikkaku yelled at one point, pointing his sword at Kaori, who was getting
back to her feet from an attack.

"I'm a WOMAN!" Kaori had shot back.

After being knocked around many times, Kaori had finally started to show improvement. Since an Arrancar's release of their zanpaktou differed from that of the Shinigami, she had to learn to fight without using her sword's abilities. Eventually she learned to make up for her lack of strength with skill and evasion. Instead of blocking Ikkaku's blows, she began dodging them. Kaori never actually landed a hit on her new Captain, but she had gotten better at striking. She watched for openings and aimed for vital spots that would cause the most damage despite her lack of strength.

Overall, Ikkaku had been pleased with her improvement. He didn't get to train her quite as much as he would have wanted to, but she was able to fight a bit better thanks to his training. Still, it certainly wasn't something she wanted to have to go through again.

After Ayumu had finished ripping the hairs from Kaori's eyebrows, she rubbed some kind of lotion over them and dove back into her make-up. She held up a long, skinny tube, pulled the cap off, and twisted the bottom. Up rose blood red lipstick, fresh and never previously used.

"Oh no. The eyebrows are one thing, but you are not getting lipstick on me." Kaori said, then sucked her lips in.

"Aww c'mon!"

Kaori shook her head, refusing to let Ayumu put lipstick on her.

The older Shinigami sighed. "Fine."

Kaori released her lips and glanced at the bag of make up. "Well, if you have any spare lip gloss..."

Before she could say another word, Ayumu had pulled out a tube of lip gloss and happily handed it to
Kaori. "You can keep it, I have plenty."

"Thanks." Kaori said and applied the gloss. She made a popping noise with her mouth, capping the lip gloss then putting it in her pocket.

"Hmmm...maybe now we can put on some eye-"

"Let's not over-do it." Kaori interrupted Ayumu.

"Okay, okay." She looked at her friend and grinned. "Well, your eyebrows certainly look better!" She grabbed a pocket-sized mirror and held it up for Kaori.

She had to admit, her eyebrows did look much nicer, despite the slight redness and puffiness. "They do."

"Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" Ayumu grinned and put the mirror away.

"A lot better than the Captain's training session. I don't think I'll ever get rid of those bruises."

Since the girls had done a thorough job of cleaning the previous day, there wasn't much for them to do. Stark, of course, had managed to make a mess again, but it wasn't all too bad. He was upset his spilled tea had gotten on one of his manga, not caring about the new stain on his rug. Luckily, he had gotten Kaori in time to clean it before it became a permanent mark.

"Knock knock." Came a familiar voice while the girls were sitting in their room.

Ichimaru walked in, the smile plastered to his face seemed slightly larger than usual. "Aizen wants ya ta cook for us all tonight."

"ALL of you?! Just the two of us?" Kaori said, wide-eyed.

"Well, you'll have help o' course. But he wants ya ta put the meal together. And would ya get on it soon, I'm gettin' hungry!"

Kaori sighed as Ichimaru closed the door and left. "I don't want to cook."

"Oh, come on, it can't be that bad!"

A few lesser Arrancar bustled around the kitchen, getting things ready. Like everything else in Hueco Mundo, it was huge.

"You must be the two Master Aizen wants to help with the cooking today." One of the Arrancar said as Ayumu and Kaori entered. She had short, dark hair, about an inch higher than her shoulders. Her mask covered half her face, leaving an opening where a brown eye peeked out from.

Ayumu felt her stomach churn as she looked around at all the ingredients. "Spanish food?" She groaned.

"What's wrong?" Kaori looked concerned Ayumu suddenly looked like she was sick.

"I hate Spanish food. I can't eat it without getting sick." She shuddered, turning away from a pile of beans.

"Just don't vomit on the tacos please."

Due to Ayumu's aversion to spanish food, Kaori tried to do as much as she could so Ayumu wouldn't have to deal with it too much. Luckily, most of it wasn't too hard. She did manage to forget some chicken she had been cooking though. After Ayumu pointed out that something smelled like it was burning, Kaori squealed and ran to the oven, pulling out a tray of blackened pieces of chicken.

"Guess we aren't going to have chicken in our tacos."

Kaori frowned. She liked chicken.

The girl that had welcomed them to the kitchen earlier scolded Kaori, threatening to make her eat all of it. Luckily for Kaori, the head chef let her off easy since it was her first time in the kitchen, and stomped off with the well over cooked meat.

"Hey, where does the chicken from from anyway?" Kaori muttered to Ayumu.

"Don't know, don't want to know."

Suddenly the food Kaori was cooking didn't seem quite as appetizing despite her hunger.

"Well, this looks tasty." Ichimaru said as the girls helped set the table for Aizen, Ichimaru, Tousen, and the Espada.

"It smells good." Tousen added, unable to actually see the food.

"Thank you." Ayumu and Kaori said in unison.

"Why don't you two girls join us?" Aizen motioned for the two to sit at the large table with them.

"Lord Aizen, I'm not sure you want those of a lesser rank such as us to eat with you." Ayumu looked nervously at the food. There was no way she could eat that.

Aizen waved his hand, dismissing that idea. "Nonsense. You two have been working hard, you deserve it."

Ayumu knew there was no getting out of it. "If you insist." She muttered.

The two took a seat at the opposite end of the table where extra seats and plates had been placed. Ayumu eyed her meal as if it were a terrible monster threatening to consume her the moment she touched it. Kaori, on the other hand, decided to put all thoughts of where it came from aside to satisfy her hunger.

Much to Kaori's surprise, it actually didn't taste as bad as she thought it would have. She was sure that her cooking would have come out terrible. Not all of it was spicy either, which was good because Kaori couldn't stand spicy food.

"What's wrong, Caminar?" Szayel asked as Ayumu picked at her plate, eating as little as possible. His lips twitched, trying to hold back a grin.

"It's nothing." Ayumu said and took a big bite of taco. She swallowed it against her will. She didn't want to give herself away by being an Arrancar who didn't like Spanish food.

"Hmmm..."

Suddenly, Ayumu lurched over the side of her chair and vomited. Kaori was behind her, rubbing her back.

"Hey, are you okay?" Her friend asked, worried.

Szayel couldn't hold back a smile any longer. "I knew it! It worked! My experiment is working! Puke again!"

Kaori shot Szayel a death glare. He seemed unphased.

"Let's get you to bed."

Aizen called for an Arrancar to come clean up the mess while Kaori helped Ayumu up.

"I hate Spanish food." She muttered when they were far enough away from the Espada.

"I'll be sure to sneak you something from the kitchen later on you can eat."

After getting Ayumu back to the room, Kaori headed back to the dining area to make see if Aizen wanted her to clean up. She made it about halfway when Ichimaru stopped her in the hall.

"Rangiku?" He asked, looking at Kaori in disbelief.

"Rangiku? What are you talking about?" Of course, Kaori knew exactly who Rangiku was, but she wasn't supposed to as an Arrancar. However, her confusion was real. Why would Ichimaru get her confused with his ex-girlfriend?

Ichimaru's grin grew impossibly wide as he practically ran at Kaori. She backed up, a bit creeped out.

"Ah, Rangiku! I've missed ya so much! Oh how I wish I could've taken ya with me! But...how did ya get here?" He looked confused for a moment, but his grin quickly reformed. "Oh what does that matter? I'm just glad you're here!"

"Uh...Ichimaru, Sir, I'm not-"

"When did ya get a reduction? You were fine the way you were ya know." He asked, looking down at Kaori's chest.

Kaori tried hard to resist the urge to slap him. "I told you, I'm not Rangiku!"

Ichimaru frowned. "Aw, don't be like that." He got closer, forcing Kaori to back into a wall. "I really didn't want ta leave ya. I've been thinkin' about ya ever since I left!" He was now standing uncomfortably close to Kaori. "I got this huge room I think you'll like." He placed a hand on Kaori's head and leaned closer. His breath reeked of sake. Kaori looked as if she had just been cornered by Godzilla with no possible escape.

Ichimaru's face was now so close to hers their foreheads were touching. Kaori yelped and ducked under Ichimaru. Before he got a chance to do anything else, she ran down the hall back to her room, screaming "Rape! Rape!"

"Hey, come back!" Ichimaru yelled, ready to run after her. He was stopped by Tousen.

"Gin? What's going on?"

"Why, Rangiku just came by and..." He stopped mid-sentence. "Ooooh...I don't feel so good."

Ayumu jumped up when Kaori slammed the door behind her.

"Frangranica? What's wrong?"

"Ichimaru tried to rape me!" She screamed.

For a moment, Ayumu just looked at her. She then started laughing.

"It's not funny! He was drunk and thought I was Matsumoto!" She screeched.

This only made Ayumu laugh harder.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" She managed to choke between laughs.

Kaori let herself fall face down onto her bed. "I think I'm traumatized for life."

"At least you don't have Szayel doing experiments on you."

"This spy stuff certainly isn't what I thought it would be." Kaori muttered, low enough so that nobody outside could have heard her.

"That's for sure."

The rest of their days in Hueco Mundo would be interesting, to say the least. Neither seemed completely sure they would make it back to Soul Society in one piece.
