Well, as a Jew I do want to visit Israel sometime in my life- preferably sometime in the next few years. I've been looking into a few options, and I was wondering if anybody has been on either a Birthright trip (and if so, what organization, etc.) or a NFTY/similar trip from your temple/region). Or, if you haven't heard of any of these, if you would recommend going with family, and if so, where?

Thanks so much!

Ah, I remember NFTY well! I was on board as the SAVP until I got into my Junior year. Well, enough reminiscing.

First off, Israel is a beautiful country and everyone needs to go at least once in their lifetime, regardless if their gentile or Jew.

I have family there so I have visited three times and plan to become a citizen next time I go. Now, my advice to you is to try and stay clear of tour groups. Yes, they give you a wonerful experience and you see all the sights of our home country. However, if you want to see the REAL Israel then you need to either go alone or without a tour/travel agency.

If you decide to do the latter of the two then here are my suggestions of places to visit:

Jaffa

Haifa
Tel Aviv
Mini Israel - A small, walk-through model of the entire state located near the vineyards up north
The B'Hai Gardens
Jerusalem - That's a given
The beaches - Shallow water for MILES!
The Tel Aviv Modern Art Museum - This is a WONDERFUL museum with a vast collection of beautiful art.
Ramat Aviv - This is a small town outside of Tel Aviv and is just as hip as the main city itself. It's also where my family lives. mrgreen
The Dead Sea Scrolls - There is a museum and in it, well, outside in a small courtyard and then in an enclosed, cooled dome, are the actual Dead Sea Scrolls. This is a great learning opportunity since the scrolls have been translated and have been put on display!

Oh, if you go to Jerusalem be sure to wear a long skirt. Women are not permitted inside the old city without covering their legs.

Also, if you go to visit the B'Hai Gardens be sure to bring or wear a shirt with sleeves. For some reason, women are not allowed to show their shoulders on the grounds.

There, those are a few key places to visit when you go to visit Israel! I hope this helps! User Image

There is a group called MASA, which sponsors 150+ programs in Israel. They should have something you're looking for. Otherwise, Birthright is good for a basic visit.

Israel is such a wonderful place to visit (especially because I have lots of family there, my dad lived there for many years, and my mom was born there xD). The two times I have been there I simply went with my family, but in one of the coming years I plan to go with a group (not to tour but to be active).

One group I can think of right now would be BBYO (they have tons of places they go - look at the left side of their page where it talks about passport 2 Israel).

If you decide to go alone or with family then here are some places I recommend you visit (I won't retention the ones that were mentioned in the earlier post)

Ber Sheva -- a city (where my mom was born xD) and where Abraham built his famous well that you can actually stand over and look in

a Kibbutz -- hard to describe so here

the Dead sea -- the lowest place in the world, also the most saltiest sea in the world. In Judaism it is believed that the Dead sea is the result of when the cities of Sodom and Gomorra were turned over in The Book of Genesis

a Shul -- although there are plenty of them here, if you are not Orthodox and have never been to that type of Shul, you will be shocked when you visit a Shul in Israel. There is a whole wall down the middle only with curtains that a female can look through to see what is going on. The seats are not even the same; there are just basic tables and chars; it is a neat experience

there was also this really interesting cave I visited the last time I went but I currently can not remember what it was called. another place I would recommend simply because my grandparents live there would be Kfar Saba. (I may add more as I remember more interesting places xD)

I just got back from Israel about 2 weeks ago.
They keep you moving too...
But it is an experience of a lifetime.
I went with a Hillel Birthright group.
I would recommend, if you can, to go with a group comprised of people not from your area.
My group had people from all over the United States and Argentina.
If you are Jewish, and you have the chance to go...
I don't think there is any way you can say no.
Have fun!
If you want to see my Birthright Israel trip pictures, you can hit me up on Facebook.

Or if there is a place here... I would post them.
If anyone has any good ideas, let me know.
