This is amazing, easy, and free!
http://kotaku.com/346073/ps3-megabox-homebrew-project-is-linux-for-commitment+phobes

"The PS3 is an amazing piece of machinery, but the PS3 Megabox Homebrew Project isn't waiting for Sony's inevitable firmware updates to make their dreams to come true. Nor are they installing Linux. Instead, the group is taking the bull by the horns and offering an incredible software package—completely runnable from a USB drive or DVD—to add a slew of new functionality.

A modification of open source software Freevo, Megabox brings VOIP, P2P, Firefox, 3D Linux gaming, TV recording (not sure how on this one), and emulation—as well as plenty of other features. Essentially, it's Linux without the install, reskinned with a neat media center interface. The price is right (free) so we'll give this a try and tell you what we think. Until then, here are the full details"

So what does this do? Well a lot!

So this is basically going to be Linux, just centered around the PS3 hardware?

i dont think i'll be touching this mainly because i'd be scared of the void of warranty neutral

It can't. It doesn't install anything on the system, it runs off a CD/Flash drive.

Also this kind of stuff is what Sony wants us to do with the PS3. If they didn't want us to, they wouldn't have let us have the option to put linux on it.

She's right, if this is achieved through the OtherOS option, it doesn't void your warranty. There's also the fact, like running homebrew on the PSP, that running homebrew on the PS3 through a software exploit won't void your warranty. Reason being is that there is no way to find out if one was running homebrew through something like that if you update to an official firmware and delete all your homebrew.
