I hope this is in the right subforum... I wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Anyway I had posted somewhere else that I was thinking of trying some lolita beadwork.

I
I have recently become interested in beadwork. I am quite good at making complex jewelry.

But, I have a question: How to use beadwork to make something Lolita?
I know that pearls and charms are always good (like Angelic Pretty: example), but I was wondering if any of you had more ideas for beaded Lolita jewelry and accessories? And if any beads besides pearls could work?

Now, I have just completed a necklace...
I used regular black glass bugle beads for most of it. Some black glass seed beads.
And the purple beads are the oh-so-expensive swarovski crystals purchased at a specialty bead shop downtown. (though some craft stores carry them too) They're really quite beautiful when they catch the light.

Detail Photo - I used about four threads to make that pattern, though it can be done with three.
My little sister modeled it for me - You can see her hands holding it on because I still need to find a second half for the clasp... Unfortunately it's not laying properly flat in this photo.

Does this look like it could be used for lolita at all? I know I have seen Classic lolitas wearing similar jewelry.
... Please tell me what you think.

I think it looks a little off for lolita. It's cute, but seems ... angular? I'm not sure what the word I'm looking for is, to be honest. It just doesn't seem particularly lolita, to me. Most of the beaded jewelry I've seen for gothic and classical styles incorporate chains as well as beads, and occasionally metalworking in the form of pendants and the like.

So. In short, while the necklace is nice, I don't think it's really a particularly "lolita" piece of jewelry.

Perhaps you could try larger, rounded beads instead of the long, tube-shaped beads and angular crystals. The more organic shape might work better.

Okay thanks.
Fortunately the friend I made it for isn't lolita, so I don't have to worry about that.

You mentioned it was not laying flat in the photo in which your sister modeled the necklace. I am afraid a necklace like that will never stay laying flat. Perhaps there is another type of bead you can use to make it appear more elegant, and less ric-a-rac. I'm thinking longer tube-like beads? That will stay in shape, making it appear more clean cut. That may improve it's "lolitaness." Also, perhaps lighter colors that do not contrast so harshly...

By the way, the necklace has very nice design! I'm thinking if you had only used pearls, it would be such a unique and beautiful necklace, worthy of a Lolita's neck. I'd love to see your experimentation with other beads, especially pearls. Remember, pearls don't have to be boring- they come in tons of colors, and if you can work them into your design, it would be simply wonderful!

It's really pretty, but it doesn't exactly seem Lolita to me, per say.
Then again, most of my Lolita accessories tend to be made of lace, lace, and more lace!

It's still really pretty~ How did you make the strands connect? If that questions makes any sense at all? XD

I use lots of threads and sort of weave them together with the beads. It is rather time consuming, and it gets frustrating if the thread tangles, but it is a very fun way to bead.

But yes, I am going to try some pearls and lace next! ^.^
