I'm a sax, and I recommend that you should have done auxillery.

well the best thing to do would be to ask the band istructor about how you can learn a faster or a easier way to learn the trombone...or you can just quit and go to a band or marching band.

Practice practice practice. Remember to empty your spit, become less coordinate with the fingers, and pretend it's the only thing you've ever played the second you put it together. I learned to play flute after trombone. But when I was learning to play trombone I would learn the intitial music before I learned the instrument, it gave me time to work out the playing kinks and I didn't sound horrible on the music. Learn the notes in the lineup before you do anything else. That's the only way I know how to learn fast.

Actually, I did that too, but you just gotta get the hang of it. Think of the slide positions as fingerings, and the trigger (if you have one) as the fourth rotor/valve.

Example (not always true, but for basic purposes...):

1st Position = Open
2nd Position = 2nd Valve
3rd Position = 1st Valve
4th Position = 1st and 2nd Valve
5th Position = 2nd and 3rd Valve
6th Position = 4th Valve OR 1st and 3rd Valve
And I can't even reach 7th position, so... D:<

You can't rely on this all the time, but it definately helps when you're starting. Even I still have trouble reading, comprehending, and processing the Jazz Bass Trombone music. I still think Tuba when I read music, but I take my Tuba thinking and convert it to Bass Trombone through logic, math, and whatnot. After a while, I can play fluently and stuff.

Which reminds me... I haven't practiced my Bass Trombone in forever... -cough- >_>;;

First, the Tone. while practicing, close your eyes, take a big breath (you played tuba, so this shouldn't be a problem) and set a good tone by a solid F and hold it. Slowly move up and down your range chromatically. It's fun and easy on trombone because all you have to do is move up or down the slide. make sure you are in tune for each note, and have a rich, liquid gold(not molten, cool liquid gold)tone.Next, remember the jazz style. Think two and four, not one and three. If you are playing blues/swing jazz, give beat two and four a slight accent to "swing" the notes. If you are playing Bossa Nova, you will probably play background. If so, keep the beat tight. otherwise, stay nice and relaxed for the melody. If you are playing rock, hell, just roll with it. An awesome trombone chord sounds just like guitar. Remember, Jazz has a relaxed feel, so just remember to keep counting in your head, and mark other
corrections on your chart with a pencil.

Keep practicing. Just by having a good tone you will be better than most others. awesome trombone sounds relaxed and easy, and you'll get to laugh at how silly the other instruments are. PM me if you need more advice.
