This question has probably popped up so much, so, I'll tell you my side of the story and you'll see why I have this question and why I need answers.
I am a red-head, carrot-top, whatever you call people with red hair. Therefore, I get sunburns very easily. I do not tan at all. Now, you are probably asking, "Why on earth did ChickenCereal just say that?" Well, at my marching band next year, they practice a lot outside, so that means there is a possibility I might get a sunburn. I can put on sunblock, but that only helps prevent it -- doesn't help make it not happen 100%.
I also get hot (temperature-wise for those if you who are perverted) a lot at times, so it could be a problem in the summertime.
Don't get me wrong... marching band seems very fun and I'd like to do it, but I'm just afraid of seriously injuring myself with sunburns. Should I join the marching band next year?

I think you should join. 3nodding Next school year will be my first year, too. 3nodding
Just get reaaaaaaally strong sunscreen and keep it with you at all times...and wear a big hat. It'll give you shade, and big hats are fun. =D
I'll probably have to do the same thing. I may only be a blonde, but I'm really pale and I burn easily. Tan is not a word for me. xd

YES!!! It pwns.
If you are really worried about your health though, I'd say try it out for a day or two and let the director know if you have any problems. Most band directors would let you sit out for a little while if you get overheated, and all band camps have water breaks. Band camp will be the worst part. Once you're past that, marching band should almost feel easy. It won't be as hot and you won't be outside as much. So if you find band camp is too much, perhaps your director would let you skip it and learn how to march after school or something. I know this would all work with my band, I hope it works for yours.
Marching band is amazing. It's been the best experience of my life. You meet a lot of friends and have the opportunity to become really close. You have the built-in "family" of your section. And I can't even begin to describe how it feels to march a performance. You'll have to discover that one for yourself. ^_^

Well, being in marching band requires long hours of practice and math skills to get the beat on time and the steps too. also, i warn you.. Concentrate of you dont want to fall on your but like i did for marching backwards too fast.. this freshman got trampled in one of the shows by 5 people. she is short so she took too small of a step which caused the person next to her to step on her show and hold her down. oh yeah. hopefully you can stand the heat if you live in a hot hot state like texas! (woot woot) i passed out like 3 times so remember to eat and have lots of water...dont eat cereal or drink milk in the morning..trust me..it wont be pretty

I think you should definitely do it. I'm a redhead too, and I got burned pretty bad in all my time at camp, but it was definitely worth it. Marching band will be one of the greatest experiences you'll ever have in music, I promise you.
