Personality: Bellatrix can be a very intimidating character, though half the time she doesn't try to be. The blind Speaker towers over most other Nequus, frightening some with her irritable manner and conversations with a ghost only she can hear. Said ghost was a Shrila, the servant of some long-dead ancestor of Bella's, whose skull hangs from her neck, thereby permanently attaching his soul to her. Betelgeuse is an obedient, devoted little companion, though he frequently forgets his Mistress's blindness and never knows when to keep his big beak shut. Bella is irritated at the world and every Nequus in it, mostly because without her sight she focuses purely on personality and attitude, not looks or breed, and has found that the vast majority (in her mind) are brainless, annoying, bothersome twits. She ignores half the questions curious Nequus plague her with, and threatens to beat or snap the wings of anyone that dare ask her to call on the dead, despite the fact that speaking to the dead is her greatest strength. Sometimes, though, she will allow certain Nequus to stay in her company if she decides that they aren't too terribly bothersome. She is loyal only to herself, and the only creature she doesn't dislike horrendously is Betel. She only dislikes him half as much as everyone else. Usually. ...sometimes.

Location: Bella typically stays in or around the valley, mostly because of its mild climate and lack of things to trip on or run into, though she has been known to travel to other places on some (very rare) occasions.

Bellatrx's Tree is located in the Western Quadrant

Why are you putting a 'table of contents' here, Mistress?
Because, surprisingly enough, I like to keep everything organized to make up for the lacktherof relating to my thoughts. Since you're always pestering me and interrupting me, I can never get my thoughts straight. So--
Oh, I thought so.

Why are you trying to organize something you can't even see?
....I hate you.

Mistress, why is your tree so far in Shrilal?
......*glare*
I thought only old nequus had their trees so fa--
.........*GLARE*
...oh.

The Tree
The tree is set fairly far into Shrilal, as Bella is by no means one of the youngest nequus around. She has advanced several years, and several rings of generations have thus surrounded the borders that she once knew as the edge of Shrilal.

The tree has done naught but grow with time, and it is taller than the large mare herself. Still, several lower hanging branches are within reach, and it is here that several interesting objects are placed. A clean, little white bone from some small, unfortunate creature; a flat, smooth white rock; and the pure white horn of an Ichsa, snapped off at the base and judging by its length, the poor victim hadn't even reached adulthood. Besides these items, several leather cords are strung about the tree, but whether placed there by nequus or human, no one alive can say.

Besides this collection of half-morbid trinkets, the tree itself is rather curious. The bark is a pale gray patched with a rich tan color, and it is impossible to tell where the saplings had been separate at conception, so much had they grown and melded together. The trunk is wide, the tree straight and sturdy, with no signs at all of decay, no tinges of death that would mark the end of its former occupant. Its leaves, usually a rich tan, fade to a bland tannish-gray in fall before falling off the tree. They are replaced in spring with brand new, fresh white leaves, which quickly grow and change color to the same rich tan by summer.

One last peculiar thing about the tree, however, is four of the lowest hanging branches seem stunted and, seemingly, stopped growing. No leaves grow on these four branches.

And I should care... why?
But Mistress! These people, they're interested in learning more about you?
And I should care.... why?
Because it'd be the perfect opportunity for more people to learn about you!
And I should care..... why?
Because -- because -- because you should! If people want to learn more about you, you should tell them! You'll make lots of friends that way!
And I should care...... why?
But Mistress!!! You should-- hey, hey I see you now! I'm not the one that's blind, I can see you ignoring me! Oh, oh fine, just turn around and walk away from me! See how far you get! ...not very far, because.. you're blind! Blind! You hear me? ....you hear me, right Mistress? ....right?

Name: Bellatrix
Meaning: 'Female warrior' in Latin, and also the name of the star that marks the left shoulder of Orion.
Nickname: Bella, but don't call me that.
Age: Too old but not dead yet
Gender: Female, duh.
Height: 19 hands. Don't make me squish you.
Eyes: White. Blind. Duh.
Color: Tan paint

Family: Deceased
Love Interest: Deceased and there will NOT be another
Children: HA! Hell no.

Strengths
- Raw power -
Being able to kick your face in if I feel like it.
- Intellect and common sense -
Yes, I'm blind. That doesn't mean I'm stupid, mind you.
- Reaction time -
I have to have good reaction time with how often Betel FAILS to tell me of rocks I'll trip on.
- Stamina -
Even though I hardly ever run (I'll trip or fall, idiot.), I will have to walk or trot for hours or days for whatever reason.

Weaknesses
- Strength -
Then again, I never need to move heavy loads, so why should it even matter?
- Luck -
It's terrible. What more can I say? Everything bad that could ever happen, seems to happen to me. Sucks.
- Control and recovery -
I can only do a few small things at once without problem; keep Betel by me at all times, speak with ghosts, etc. However, calling on spirits is a pain in the a**, and I can't talk to them for more than five to ten minutes. I've gradually increased the time, though.
- Flying skills -
I don't fly. At all. End of story.

Likes
Peace and quiet
Being left alone

Dislikes
Betelgeuse
Tripping on things
Running into things
Tripping/running into things because Betel failed to mention them

Cold
Rain
Getting/being wet

Pretty much everything else.

Mistress Bella! Do you like your Speaking powers?
No.
No? But why?!
Because I'm forced to put up with you.
...hey!! Yeah, well... I'm forced to put up with you, too!
But you love it.
....I know..

Speaking
Ugh, these God forsaken powers. Because of them, I went blind at an early age. Because I was blind, I couldn't help the one person closest to me who I lost to stupid assholeish herd leaders clashing over the stupidest things. I never forgave them.

I'm blind, and the only time I can see any creature is if they're a pure spirit and I call on them. Then I have to pick the pieces of their soul from the rest and sort them, and put them back together. The wind does such horrible things to the already tattered souls, it seems. Once they're complete once more, I can see them clearly in my mind's eye, however their eyes are black and beady and lifeless. Through my Speaking is the only way I'm able to see creatures and colors at all; I wish I wasn't blind, but that's the worst side-effect of these goddamned powers.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't the only one who could hear the souls of those long since past. But alas, the conversations run only in my head except with ghosts and Betel. Half the nequus I meet think I'm crazy because it seems I'm talking to nothing. I'm far from crazy, but if the thought will get you to leave me alone then yeah, I'm crazy. Grr. Rawr. Ooga booga.

Did it work? No? Damn, didn't think so. Oh well. Anyway, if they think I'm crazy it suits me fine, means they'll leave me the hell alone. Though some of them seem to be fascinated by my psychotic-esque conversations and try to probe further into my life with irritating questions and demands for me to Speak to dead loved ones for them. Idiots. Just because I can communicate with the dead doesn't mean I will do it for anyone. Mostly just for myself. Because I can.

I... I think they want to know about me! They want to know about me, Mistress!!
....okay?
No one ever wants to know about me!!
Nope.
It's amazing!!!
Whoop-de-do.

Name: Betelgeuse
Meaning: The name of the star that marks the right shoulder of Orion.
Nickname: Betel
Status: Deceased
Gender: Male
Species: Shrila
Family: Deceased

Stengths:
- Loyalty -
If he could, he'd die for his Mistress. But he can't, because he's already dead.
- Existing -
That's pretty much it.

Weaknesses:
- Behavior -
He's more annoying than anything.
- Rocks -
He never notices them, so he never tells Bella about them, and she ends up tripping on them and almost falling.
- Status -
He's a dead ghost no one else (besides ghosts) can see/hear.

Likes:
- Bellatrix
- Serving Bellatrix
- His job
- The ocean
- Foals
- When people who can't see him talk to him anyway

Dislikes:
- People who insult his Mistress
- People who try to hurt his Mistress
- Not being able to talk/be seen by anyone besides Bella

Betel's skull hangs from a leather cord around Bella's neck. Because it's constantly with her, it only takes a small amount of energy to ensure his constant companionship. Because he has been with her day in and day out for a number of years, Bella doesn't even notice now that she uses any energy at all to keep him present.

He is like a ghost in that he can follow Bella around and communicate with other ghosts and be seen and heard by them, but he is like a simple soul in that he would not have even a sliver of a chance of staying together against the wind; he would merely be a tattered soul without anyone to communicate with, ghost or living. It is due to Bella's Speaking powers that he is able to 'live' at all, in a sense; he is partially whole and partially not. The simplest way to explain it would be thus: Bella cannot make ghosts. She can fix their tattered soul and hold them steady against the wind which would normally tear them to shreds until she tires of them and releases them. The souls she talks to, she can only speak to in her mind. The departed souls are unable to turn into ghosts, though they allow her to see what they looked like before death in her mind's eye. Betel is like a mix between the two; a departed soul with no hope of becoming a full-fledged ghost, and also a ghost with no hope of ever being seen by or communicating with the living like other ghosts are able to.

Essentially, Betel is caught between the two, and will continue to be so until Bella's death, in which case he will become subject to the winds once more and can only hope to be spoken to by another Speaker.

Betel, shut up.
But Mistress! It's good to make friends!
I don't want friends.
Butbutbut...! At least you have me!
You're not my friend.
...yeah, I suppose. I'm your faithful little servant!
.....ugh...

The Voices

Shore
Bella says: Ugh, he's alright I suppose. He was so annoying at first, what with his disgusting humor, but he turned out... tolerable enough, I suppose, until he turned into a pretentious little b*****d whose face I'd gladly rearrange. I don't think I'd like to hear him anytime soon.
Betel says: He spoke to me! He actually spoke to me!! I liked him very much, indeed, though he said something before he left which very much upset Mistress Bella, although she refuses to admit it.

Vlad
Bella says: Ick, this annoying ghost was such a pain, almost half as bad as Betel. Seems to think he's so much better than anything, alive or dead, because he's a ghost. Tch. Thinks he'll last forever, too, but don't make me laugh. Nothing lasts forever. Nothing.
Betel says: I actually got to speak with this one, it was wonderful! Well... It was, at first.. but... but he insulted Mistress Bella, and I will not tolerate any of that. I told him off, of course, and we swiftly left his company.

Jasper
Bella says: What a weirdo. Honestly. And so boring. If his random speeches and explanations that told me absolutely nothing didn't put me to sleep, his horribly long pauses did. Ugh. And he kept saying how he knew my grandmother and all sorts of crap. He was so incredibly boring, I left.
Betel says: This one spoke to me, too! Though, he seemed to have seen my skull before, when Mistress Bella's grandmother still had it. I don't quite remember him, but he seems to have remembered my old Mistress and my skull. He kept trying to flaunt to my Mistress, poor fool; she didn't see a single thing, of course, so his flaunting was in vain. The living confuse me so.

How come we never go anywhere besides Ryuten or the valley, Mistress?
Because I don't want to go anywhere else.
But why not?
Because I don't feel like tripping over every damn thing.
But you have me to tell you what's in your way!
And you do a damn good job of telling me about the rocks I always trip on.
I don't notice rocks! Just the bushes and trees and logs on the ground!
Rocks are just as bad, Betel! I'd rather run into a bush than stumble and trip on rocks that you don't notice!
....but they're just rocks..!
The size of your skull or bigger. Start noticing them.

The Places

Psychotics in the Snow - Bella and Betel meet Shore in D'ob one snowy winter night. Betel is quite taken with someone who, although he can't see the Shrila, said hello to him.
Pointless Arguments - The dynamic duo meet a ghost in Ryuten one night. Betel is at first thrilled to talk with someone other than Bella, but soon tells off the ghost for insulting his Mistress.
Lost in Thought and Time - Bella, lost in her thoughts, comes across old Father Time. Betel decides against describing the stallion for specific personal reasons. Bella finds Jasper SO boring she leaves. Poor Jasper.

"I can feel it!"

"Yes, mother."

"I can feel it! This time, we'll get one!"

"Yes, mother."

"Yessir, you bet your fetlocks we'll be getting a Speaker from this lot!"

"Yes, mother."

"I can feel it in my bones!" Proclaimed the old, blind, flea-bitten gray mare. "Now! You take this, because I'm sick 'n tired of holding it all to myself."

"Yes, mother."

And with that, she rolled over a bit and craned her neck, ignoring the series of protesting cracks the movement made, to fetch a clean skull on a leather rope from beside her. She presented it to her son, waiting for him to take it. He visibly cringed, sticking his tongue out in complete disgust, and with another horrified shudder for good measure, he gingerly took the leather strap between practiced lips.

"Now you go and hang that in the growing tree," the old mare said once the burden was received. "Betel should help bring out the speaking powers in the growing fruits."

"Yesh, muther," he managed to murmur around the leather rope in his mouth.

"Now go on, I need to talk to your father." And with that, she shifted and turned her head to the side, talking about the weather and the grass and how Robert was doing that day, and the young, disturbed stallion quickly trotted off, once again wondering if his mother was talking to a ghost only she could see, using her speaking powers, or was just a lunatic. He couldn't help but wonder how Robert was doing that day, though, considering he'd fallen off a cliff and snapped his neck last year.

"Why the hell are you putting that thing on the tree?"

"Because mother told me to," he sighed, flicking an ear. "She's near death, the least I can do is do what she asks."

"Are you kidding? That old bat has been alive longer than any nequus should be. Besides, she's blind. How would she know if we put it on the tree or not?"

"She'd know," he said solemnly, carefully putting the leather cord around one of the stronger branches and watching the morbid little skull sway in the wind.

The flea-bitten gray mare opened her milky white eyes in the dead of night - the half-crazy smile on her face was replaced by a solemn frown, her brows furrowed. "Betelgeuse," she whispered as she swiftly and effortlessly pulled his soul together. She didn't need his skull near her to be able to communicate with him.

"Yes, Mistress?" He offered, his voice heard only by the elder Speaker.

"Did he put your skull on the tree like I told him to?"

"Yes, Mistress."

"Any complaints?"

"They don't like it, but he insisted to his mate that he would do as you wished. She was not pleased at all, though she hasn't taken any effort to remove it."

"Good. She should leave well enough alone, this is business of our family. She has nothing to do with it."

"But they're her children, too," he pointed out in a hesitant tone. "So she is, technically, part of it now."

"She is not a part of it at all. Those children are mine until I say otherwise. I will say otherwise when they turn out to be useless, which they all probably will be, all five of them, because that's what my son is. Useless. Speaker powers develop at a young age, so I will find out soon enough if I have passed on these God-given powers to any of my offspring. Why do you think I insisted on having such a large family?"

"A higher chance of another Speaker?" He murmured.

"Of course. Robert was useless; going and getting himself thrown off a cliff and snapping his neck. Little Diane was, too; going and falling in a river in the dead of winter and getting hypothermia and dying at such a young age.. Tch, pathetic. Of course, neither were blessed with my special abilities, anyway. But still, they could have at least attempted to pass down the genes before going and getting themselves killed. Bah."

"Yes, Mistress.."

"And before you say another thing, no, his mate is not a part of our family and never will be. If their children don't get any abilities, then he'll have another mate and try again."

"Why would he do that?"

"Because I'll tell him to, and he'll always do what dear mother tells him to, the submissive little git."

"..yes, Mistress..."

"Go be a dear and watch the tree for me. I'll call on you tomorrow night."

"Yes, Mistress..."
