I would say just make something you think looks cool while avoiding going overboard. When I enter avi contests I don't really expect to win. In my opinion the avi's I make are the best, and I am not going to go out of my way to make an avi that I think other people will like. If people don't vote for my avi then they obviously have bad taste. Just enter the avi you think looks the best.
