It's fine that you posted it here!!

With a large group of people, I tend to find that placing a bunch of food that people can help themselves to is a good way of doing it...

Perhaps a roast of some kind with a few different salad or vegetable options? I'm not a huge meat eater, but have seen that work well before.

What I would usually do is make a couple of massive bowls of different pastas, maybe one with a tomato base, and one with a cream base, along with a huge tossed salad.

If you need actual recipes, let me know and I can help you out with some pasta ideas! biggrin

I think we have different names for spaghetti dishes here, I think what you call spaghetti, we call spaghetti bolognaise. To us, spaghetti is just the name of the pasta with that particular shape, not the sauce. I'll try to type out a recipe or two for you soon, I'm about to rush out now though...

for larger groups, it definitely helps to have as many things that can sit in the oven / fridge / stove. frees you up to do other things like prep other dishes or entertain.

roasted root vegetables, gratins of most any sort, roast beef, and lasagnas top the list there. simple, sort of rustic, hearty. cook em and they can stay warm in the oven. simple salads can be prepped ahead and stashed in the fridge and vats of soup can simmer on the stove top.

how many courses were you planning and are there any dietary restrictions? more importantly, how much time and money do you have to prep? sweatdrop

something casual. no big deal. no dietary restrictions.

a roasted herb-crusted pork loin and root vegetables? both can cook in the oven at the same time. probably 2 to 2 and a half hours total (i'm guessing a 5 lb. sucker should feed 10).

while that's going, you can prep some greenery. i like some canned artichoke hearts and cherry tomatoes tossed in a simple balsamic thrown over some torn green leafys.

i like to keep dinner simple but go nuts on dessert. any plans for that?

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight...

I think most everyone likes Italian, right? I'd go with the multiple pastas idea.
I'd make like a whole wheat rigatoni or cheese tortellini with a marinara sauce on the side and a linguini with alfredo sauce on the side.
You could have meatballs on a separate plate and even add a vegetable lasagna if you wanted.
I also like baked stuffed tomatoes and they are pretty unusual and easy to do. (cut off the top, gut out the insides, add cooked brown rice to the middle stuff, a lot of parmesan cheese, some spices of your choice like oregano and sage, replace the filling, and top off with a slice of provolone and some oregano, then bake 'em.) A massive salad is also a must.

...and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

Well, what I usually fall back on is fried rice. Just make a bunch of fried rice a few hours before you want to start cooking it, then stick it in the fridge so it gets drier and colder. Then when you're ready to get cookin', put some onions/garlic in a pan with some oil and fry them for a bit, then throw in the rice and anything else you want to put in it and keep cooking it on high, but keep moving it.

It cooks really fast, really easy, and it's usually a crowd pleaser. xd
