Edgar Allen Poe has written many stories which have gothic literary terms. His preference was that of dark literature and among his stories are the element of death, which is usually imminent to all the characters. He used literary gothic terms to portray the story in his views that he intended for the short stories to have. There are many short stories that Poe has written which have excessive amounts of gothic terms. Black cat, which has terms like "omens," and the mentioning/emphasis of supernatural events, is used as an example of gothic literature in schools. Two other stories which have similar situations in it are The Pit and the Pendulm and The Tell-tale Heart.
The Black cat has gothic literary terms throughout the short story to help Poe create confusion and suspense for the reader. The story is about a man who claims that his cat is evil and then kills his wife in result of trying to kill the black cat. There are a few major gothic literary terms in it that help create the spooky aura for a good short story. "These events have terrified--have tortured--have destroyed me," (The Black Cat, pg 1, paragraph 1). Even in the beginning of the story, the narrator discusses while in his last 24 hours of life, how the previous events in his life had an impact in a spooky and negative way. This would be an example of a foreshadow (because he is going to die soon). The quote also hints that the man is about to tell a story that has an element of evil, which is another term that could represent the gothic element that Poe's stories often have." Later into the story, the narrator goes into detail about this cat which he named 'pluto'. The cat is all black which would be superstition because black cats are said to be bad luck or witches in disguise. He talked about his temper being a disease and how he would treat the animals horribly, but the black cat seemed to have a different effect on the narrator. One night, the narrator's house catches on fire (which would be a gothic element of setting) and Pluto dies. He seems to have developed a drinking addiction during the timeline of the story because there are many times where types of alcohol was mentioned. Poe may have wanted that to be the 'disease' that he talks about.
"Evil thoughs became my sole intimates-- the darkest and most evil of thoughts." (The Black Cat, Page 4, paragraph 2). This quote is important to the story because it shows how the main character has been sucumbed to evil and darkness which is relevent throughout the story. By the end of the short story, the narrator had killed his wife and burried her in the wall which could be a symbolic representation of a tomb. The Black Cat's errie plot and conclusion show that this story was written using gothic terms to help Poe make it eeire and literate while having a nice superstitous aura to it.
Edgar Allen Poe created an amazingly story that used Gothic literary devices to allow the story to be deep and meaningful and also have the plot of a horror story. The Pit and the Pendulum is a story about a man who awakens in darkness and does not know really where he is. He uses primitive instincts and smarts to figure out that he was in some kind of cell.
