I've got the Rosetta Stone Software (which is wonderful once you get the hang of things) but I've gotten a little... confused when the lessons started introducing verbs and what-not. There seem to be three different ways of saying "(subject) is jumping." :
(subject) wa tonde imasu
(subject) tobiorite imasu
(subject) tobikoete imasu
So here are my guesses:
wa tonde imasu = flying and jumping(?)
wa tobiorite imasu = animal/non-human subjects jumping(?)
wa tobikoete imasu = human subjects jumping(?)
Could you please tell me if I am correct?
(edit smile Also, does "wa" = "is" ?

I'm afraid that I don't know about the jumping words except that tonde can be used for both jumping and flying, however, I do know a little about wa. Wa doesn't mean "is"...it is a particle and it basically just indicates that the word that comes before it is the subject. There are threads that talk more about wa and other particles, you might want to look at them. Good luck learning Japanese. ^_^

"wa" = topic marker Although there's a certain order words tend to come in in Japanese, it really depends on the particles and can practically go in any order.
I was confused by it as well.
跳ぶ・飛ぶ・翔ぶ【とぶ】tobu (v5b,vi) (1) (esp. 跳) to jump; to leap; to spring; to bound; to hop; (2) (esp. 飛ぶ) to fly; to soar;
飛び下りる・飛び降りる・跳び降りる・飛降りる【とびおりる】tobioriru (v1,vi) to jump down; to jump off; to jump from; to jump out of;
飛び越える・跳び越える【とびこえる】tobikoeru (v1,vt) to jump over; to clear; to walk over (someone)

imasu is the polite conjugation of iru-to exist (animate objects). With the -te form of a verb it means "in the progress of doing."
