Hello my name is Bryalba and I live in a Commune.
One of the first things you need to know about communes is they hate being called communes and like being called intentional community's (IC). Most are self sustainable and rarely people will have outside jobs. Depending on what IC your looking at it can be anywhere from five people to 90.

}Edit{
Old topic I know I need to stay on my toes about topics I make. I moved around since the topic was made staying in another IC and then living in cohouseing for a bit. You are still welcomed to ask me any questions even though I don't currently live in one anymore.

To answer some questions I got in PM's
I found the first IC I stayed at through my friend He was going to do a visit a year before i met him. I decided to give it a try for myself.

This is a good starting off point if your looking to give it a try.

Yes we pretty much have a garden to earn our income to live sustainable. The stuff we can't grow we buy local. The stuff we grow is all organic. Sometimes when we don't have something in the fridge we just go outside and pick it from the garden. There were a few rules (rules arn't called rules but called "norms".) but nothing big.

that's cool, you pick the food out of the garden, but what do you do in the winter?? buy all local? and do you all have jobs outside your community? or how earn a living?

well we have a greenhouse so we still grow things in the winter also we have a walk in freezer so we can stockpile stuff. Since there is not alot of us everybody needs to be on hand to work therefore we don't have outside jobs.

it sounds lovely! I wonder if you are still keeping up with this thread?

I've dreamed about joining an intentional community like yours a lot. It's either that or go to college and try to be a part of normal society.. haven't had much luck with that yet.
I've looked at stuff like ic.org and there are tons of communities in all different places.. how did you find one that you felt was right for you?

I met alot of people in there mid twenties right out of collage or dropped out.
Every IC has there own little community. Some are more structured some are more relaxed. It also depends on the population. Its a matter of deciding if you want to live in a large village type community or a smaller more family oriented community. My advice is visit a few and pick one you feel at home the most.

Since you've lived in a commune before, my question is this: How do you distinguish the good communes from the bad? In the past and present, some are more like cults or carry bad morals.

Its pretty much a matter of your own judgment. Like anything research helps alot. Google as much as you can about the community you want to visit. Some community's have yahoo groups, message boards and myspace pages. The Communal living board on Hip Forums is also a good place to look at and has several topics about various communities. If you can talk to people who have visited or lived there and how there outlook was. Ask as many questions as possible, if there reluctant to give you strait answers that should ring some warning bells.
The only community I can think up thats sketchy is zendik.
