So.....the audition for All-State is about a month away, which means that there's still (theoretically) time to fix and fine-tune the audition piece. Because the more people you get to listen to you, the more suggestions you'll get, I decided to post this here to see what people think.

http://media.putfile.com/Burrill-Phillips-Concert-Piece

It's not a perfect run-through; there are a couple of places where tempo nearly falls apart; I know about these, they were flukes. I'm specifically interested in what people think about tone (especially vibrato on the slow section) and intonation. I regret that I cannot post a score....

it depends on how long you've been playing. for four years or under, that was a really good performance. for five or over you're going to have to work pretty hard. you squeaked a bit during the fast part, but the slow part was beautiful. and like you said, the tempo nearly fell apart. try practicing the fast part and with a metronome.

You think there's enough vibrato on the slow part? I feel like it's kinda shallow and fast...

make sure you get dynamic contrast, My band director told us that when he goes to judge the double reeds this year at all-state here he just wants the people to be able to play the piece, at whatever tempo they can play it at wheather it be fast or slow. And for them to get the articulations and having the dynamics would just be a plus even if is all one dynamic on the sheet. But thats just information ingeneral. I think you did a pretty nice job overall though. -- hope these comments and what not are helpful to you.

It was pretty good. Like ^ said, it needs some dynamic contrast at the beginning, though it got a little better at the end. There were some short little runs that needed some evening out, and your air support at the end was a little shaky. Overall though, it was very good. I enjoyed listening to it.

woah!! your really good hten!! what are you in 6th or seventh grade? cuase i'm in 7th and my bd said if he moved me up to 8th grade i'd still be first charir and i think you're better than me!! but i agree with her you should work with a metro nome. and make sure that you work on the dynamics. cuase it didn't seem like you did enough dynamics, untill you went into the slow part. but for a seventh grader(uhh i think you are anyways) that is really good. is it an audition piece that they gave you or that you picked. cuase if you picked it, they won't care what grade you're in, if you play it bad your going to get a bad grade. just givin gyou a heads up. Good Luck!! mrgreen

Um...
I'm ......in ..... tenth......
And it was assigned. It's the All-State Audition piece for Massachusetts.

Oh, and thanks for comments about dynamics in the opening. Every entrance is marked forte, but that doesn't mean I can't phrase it. I guess I've been kind of caught up in rhythms and articulation... sweatdrop

I think it was VERY good, just try to play with more feeling. Music should ALWAYS convey something. heart

You don't necessarily need more dynamics, just more emotion. Try to add a little more lift to the end of your phrases so they don't sound so clipped. You were going a little flat on some pitches towards the end to, so be careful to keep up the support. Other than that, it sounds good.
Best of luck!
