I think it was intended more as a gift for Chris as a pretentious "this artist is supposed to be great" kind of thing. Since Chris was new money (inheritance from Grandpa if I remember correctly), they were trying to impress him.
Theres a thought...I just cant get over it....it's so....

so... emily? I mean it's a gift but not a gift. Well intended, there's not much two fully grown people need but art is a great way to start their lives and home together. But that art? Ugly. Weird. And Emily. Why would she give something perfect for Lorelai? That would mean understanding her. Plus, she told them on the answering machine... Emily had to retaliate.
