What Lurks in the ShadowsWho: LuLu, Samuel, and Counterparts When: Afternoon Where: Durem Weather: Winter Status: Complete Post-note:Things seemed to be looking up for the rabbit. Her recent encounter with Samuel had gone over well. Even their lunch together had been filled with more conversation than she had expected. Though most of it centered on LuLu and her life, Samuel did spill a few details of his own. She had learned that he actually owned quite a few businesses in Gaia. So many, in fact, that the girl could not quite remember all the names he had listed off. Anyone with eyes could quickly figure out the man was affluent, but it was hard to fathom just how much he was involved in. LuLu had also received some terrific news about Franco’s health. He was on the mend! She had just finished visiting with Selene to go over the specifics of the doctor’s most recent update. The older woman did not spare a single detail as she repeated what they had said to LuLu. Apparently, Franco was stable enough to move from the critical care unit to what they called the ‘step down unit’. They had assured Selene that it was good news and a sign that things were progressing in the right direction. The sigel was beyond overjoyed to hear that he was recovering, and she was certain that Selene was even more thankful for the news. Considering that her adoptive son was in a coma, the older woman was holding up well. Selene was taking it upon herself to run Knockout at full service, and LuLu had to visit the gym in Durem in order to meet up her. She figured keeping busy was how the woman was dealing with Franco’s recuperation. Though the man was stuck in a hospital room, life continued to move on beyond his four walls. LuLu could not blame Selene for her way of coping. She was just happy to see the woman was staying strong. LuLu already had a few blocks separating her from Knockout now. She turned down a nearby alleyway. Overtime, she had discovered that it was a good shortcut between the main road and the bus station. The rabbit pulled out her new phone as she continued her leisurely stroll. Its screen came to life as she held it up, as though it had a mind of its own. LuLu squeaked softly to the phone’s receiver, “Text Selene.” The screen flashed as the text messenger popped up on her command. She continued speak to the device as it recorded her, “It was fun visiting you. I am glad Franco is doing better. Keep me update--The hell.” The rabbit’s attention moved away from her phone and towards the path ahead of her. There was a large silhouette at the end of the alley. It appeared to be a man. He was easily over six feet tall and as wide as a compact car. She tucked her phone away in her coat’s pocket. Her guard went up as she advanced on him. She probed cautiously, “Can I help you?” The man closed the seven foot gap between them with two steps. Now the rabbit could see him more clearly. He was bundled in a coat just like she was. He also had a mask covering the lower half of his face. He spoke with in a gruff bark, “Yeah, answer me. How does it feel to be on the top, Scarlet?” LuLu’s ears perked. She recognized the voice; even muffled by the fabric over his face she would recall that smart mouth anywhere. It was The Hulk. She was confused by his question. “What do you mean?” The Hulk’s posture changed. His shoulders rose with visible agitation. He continued, “How does to feel to be on top and take a shot at the title away from a real boxer?!” He stomped a large foot into the snow on the ground. “It should have been me at that stadium. I should be the winner!” He scoffed, “The Scarlet Starlet was a real boxer. You are just some kid putting on a costume to get attention.” LuLu’s wings flared open wide to their full span, a warning display. She saw the man flinch. Good, that was the appropriate reaction. Who was he to assume she had not worked for her title. How dare he?! She had put blood, sweat, and tears into what she had achieved. The sigel replied in a hiss, “It feels like I am where I belong. And, you are where you belong-- In an alley, next to the trash.” The man did not seem pleased by the response. He was audibly growling between clenched teeth. He pointed a fat finger just behind the girl and bellowed, “Did you hear that, guys? According to the great Scarlet Starlet, we are trash.” LuLu’s attention quickly turned to that direction. Two men had snuck up to flank her. Neither was as large as The Hulk, but together they certainly looked formidable. They also had their faces covered by cloth. The leader of the trio continued, “Let’s teach this pretender a lesson about real boxing and make sure she never fights again.” The rabbit could tell he was grinning underneath his mask by the spiteful mirth in his words. LuLu trusted her ability to win a fair fight with The Hulk, but this was far from fair. This would be a bloodbath. She began to back away from The Hulk, but realized she was only succeeding in moving towards his henchmen. “s**t.” She began to look for another way out. She spotted a door in the alleyway. The sigel made a dash for it. She reached the handle just before the two men behind her could catch up. LuLu twisted the knob but only felt resistance. She slammed her shoulder against the door but it did not budge. “Dammit!” Her lavender eyes shot back in time to see a fist sailing for her head. She narrowly dodged it and countered with a shot to the man’s sternum. He doubled over and she used the opportunity to run past him. Just as she cleared him, another hand shot out a captured her arm. The sigel was yanked to the side roughly. Before she could react, she was tossed against one of the grimy brick walls. Her body bounced against it like a ragdoll. She felt hands enclose around her wrists and pin them in place. She struggled against them, but she was locked in place. The Hulk circled around her like a wolf surveying its next meal. He looked like he was ready to lick his chops. He rumbled, “That was almost too easy! Are you really the same b***h who got a cheap shot in against me?” His rough hand grabbed her chin and twisted her face up towards his. Even with the situation at hand, the rabbit’s temper flared. She ripped out of his grasp and tried to bite at his hand. To her dissatisfaction, he managed to pull it away before she could take a good chomp out of it. Without any other counter measures at her disposal, she spat at him. The Hulk simply wiped at the stain left on his shirt. He snarled, “There she is! You are definitely the right woman.” His eyes were growing dark, more sinister. The sigel began to struggle against her captor again. However, she got nowhere as their grip was only growing tighter against her. The Hulk wound a fist back and struck her. Her head snapped to the side before it fell down. His voice was tinged with an ugly glee as he spoke, “I hear it is one hell of a fall from the top, Scarlet!” Then, there was another hit. Within a minute, LuLu lost count of just how many hits she had taken. At first, each one was a new source of pain. However, now she just felt one unified ache through her whole body. The man behind her finally let go and she fell to the floor. The rabbit tried to lift herself, but her arms felt more like ground meat than anything functional. She released a groan as the Hulk’s foot pressed against her skull. He ground her cheek into the muck of the alleyway with a snicker. “Now, this is where you belong!” His snickering quickly devolved into downright belly laughter. His henchmen joined in on the joke. Just over the rolling laughter, her ears picked up on another sound; feet moving through the snow. One crunch rapidly after the other like someone was running at full sprint towards them. She heard The Hulk babble something incoherent before his foot moved off of her head. LuLu’s gaze rose up from the ground and her uneasy eyes caught a flash of red and blue in her periphery. She followed the movement and saw someone unexpected. It was Samuel’s bodyguard! The tall man was already subduing one of The Hulk’s henchmen in a choke hold while the other was splayed on the ground. Samuel’s even tone suddenly washed over LuLu, and if felt to her like a cool drink on parched lips. She had not realized just how desperately she needed some calm and security. His voice was just that. “It is ok. I am here for you.” His arms wound around her and lifted her body from the cold earth beneath her. He tucked her damp head into the warm crook of his neck. She could see the hazy shape of the rose pinned to his jacket’s lapel. The sigel felt supported in his hold. She would have thanked him, but she was too weary for words. He turned them both toward his bodyguard and beckoned, “Make sure to capture at least one, Eloise!” She could now see the fight unfolding between him and the group of thugs. The Hulk was punching at the bodyguard, but he soon realized he was not making a dent in the other man. He motioned for his accomplice on the ground to get up. The henchman rose on unsteady legs and swung for Eloise. The combination of assaults provided enough of a distraction that Eloise’s choke hold released. Realizing that they had been thwarted, the stunned trio regrouped and made a mad dash for the exit of the alleyway. The Hulk yelled back towards LuLu, “This is not the end! I will find you again, Scarlet!” He soon disappeared around the corner with his cronies. Eloise pursued them and was also gone within a few bounds of his long legs. Samuel looked down at Lu. His brows knitted together. “Who were they? Why did they do this to you?” He could see the girl was in pain, but his tone was firm. He wanted answers. LuLu’s jaw trembled as she tried to find her voice. After a long pause, she managed one weak word, “Assholes.” Soon Eloise reappeared in the alley. He was readjusting his glasses and his suit which had become disheveled during the scuffle. The expression he wore was grim. It was obvious what message he was going to deliver given that he had returned empty handed. He confirmed succinctly, “They escaped.” Samuel’s expression only seemed to grow more concerned. He exclaimed, “They do not seem like the type to give up easily. Do you think they could find your home?” The rabbit had not considered this yet. They had managed to track her back to Knockout and even her favorite shortcut. They had been tailing her for weeks or even months by now. They could very well know where she lives in Barton. This meant they also knew where Josh was. Would they go after him, too? LuLu’s gaze was fearful as it searched out Samuel. “I-I do not know.” The man’s jaw tensed. “Please, stay with me then. I have more than enough room in my home. You will be safe there.” His ice blue eyes were fixed on her intensely. LuLu hesitated for a moment before she mumbled, “Josh. If I am not there and something happens.” Samuel replied with one compelling sentence, “Everything will be tended to, Scarlet.” She could trust those words. LuLu nodded, “Then, yes.” She soon felt herself drifting off in his arms. SOLO

Don't Cry Over Spilled InkWho: LuLu, Samuel, and Eloise When: Afternoon Where: Samuel's home Weather: Winter Status: Complete Post-note:When LuLu re-awoke she found herself in an unfamiliar bedroom. She brushed the sleep from her eyes to clear up her blurry vision. Judging by the amount warm daylight spilling in through the numerous windows, it was still midafternoon. She glanced up at the rosy chiffon canopy above her and then at the soft bed beneath her. Though her surrounding were pleasant, she wondered how where exactly was she and how she had gotten there. As she rose up in from her pillows, she groaned softly. Her whole body felt like it had been hit by a cement truck. She felt aches in joints she did not know existed before. She pulled the down comforter aside. LuLu quickly noticed her left arm was bound in a splint. She inspected the bandages and tried flexing her fingers. The movement elicited a wince from the girl. Her wrist was likely sprained, fractured, or worse from her run in with The Hulk. The girl set down her arm and pushed herself up from the bed. She approached a lavish set of curtains. What she thought was an unusually large window was actually an entryway to a small balcony. LuLu pulled open the door and strode outside. She was met with crisp winter air which she inhaled sharply through her nose. She glanced at the scenery. There was a small garden, a green house, and what looked to be an enclosure that likely housed a pool. The chill soon got to the rabbit and she retreated back inside. Aside from some decorations, the bedroom contained a closet, a bathroom, and a large vanity. LuLu had discovered all she could within a matter of a few minutes. Only one unexplored door remained. She opened what she assumed was the entrance to the bedroom. She poked her head out cautiously. What lay ahead was a rather bland looking hall. Of course, it was adorned with paintings and a floral arrangement or two. However, it felt rather sterile as most of the space was dominated by varying shades of beige and gray. The colors never fluctuated except for a dulled jade, burgundy, or cobalt. The sigel slipped past the door’s threshold and moved into the hall. As she made her way along the stretch of corridor, she tried a few handles. A few were locked, but those that were opened mainly contained linen closets as well as even more bedrooms and bathrooms. When LuLu counted off the fourth bedroom, she finally hit the end of the hall and rounded a corner. A few yards in front of her were a set of sturdy looking oak doors as well as the staircase to the first floor. She approached the heavy doors and took one of the ornate handles into her hand. Her thumb worked against the latch and she gently pulled it. LuLu was genuinely dazed when the lock gave way. The door began to creak ajar. She could just make out Samuel’s voice on the other side of the dense door. She continued to pull it open. However, she met resistance before she could open it all the way. A large shadow now loomed over her and a hand, which was not Lu’s, pressed firmly against the entrance until it was closed again. Eloise’s voice sounded above her in a droning monotone, “Please do not enter Samuel’s study. He conducts…” The man paused as he searched out the right word. “Sensitive business in there.” He looked down at her and his glasses glinted in the sunlight illuminating the hall. LuLu backed away from the door and inspected the man. His most striking feature was his height. He grazed just over seven feet and dwarfed the petite girl. The rabbit mused; he probably bumped his head on every entryway he came upon. As far as his other features, they were nothing remarkable. He was obviously not all human as his ears ended in a dainty point and his hair was a little too deep of a copper red to be natural. However, he was bland compared to some of the raevans she had met. So, as far as she was concerned, he was more human than not in her book. A pout rested firmly on her lips. She had questions, and she figured this guy was as good as any to answer them. “Where am I?” She tried her best to cross her arms over her chest given the splint around her arm. She could not tell if the man rolled his eyes given the glare on his lenses, but his body language conveyed just that. “Samuel’s home. You agreed to come here for refuge before you passed out.” LuLu’s ears perked up. So she had fainted after Samuel and Eloise had found her. That explained why she did not recall being taken to the man’s small mansion or being bandaged up. She continued her probing, “How long was I asleep?” It could not have been that long, right? The Hulk had jumped her not too long after lunch time, and it was 4 o’clock at the latest now. Eloise responded tersely, “Two days.” “WHAT?!” The sigel squawked. Josh freaked out when she disappeared for more than a night! She was going to get one hell of a scolding when she returned home. “Josh is going to kill me.” She held her head with her un-splinted hand and groaned. Eloise countered promptly, “All concerned parties have been informed of your stay with us. The boy was apprehensive, but I assured him everything was fine. Now then, I am certain Samuel would like to know you have awoken.” He rapped a hand against the study door to signal they were both there. There was a short delay before Samuel emerged. The man had discarded his usual suit jacketed and was wearing a crisp white dress shirt buttoned to his wrists. He was smoothing over his tie as his gaze fell on LuLu. His lips curled into a smirk instantly, “Excellent.” He reached down and gingerly took her injured arm into his grasp. Samuel inspected it carefully before he place a brief peck on the back of her hand, “Your ability to bounce back is astounding. Even wounded you are a sight to behold, Scarlet. I apologize that the doctor could not do more to heal it.” LuLu felt a rosy flush kiss her cheeks. She pulled away her arm and tucked it out of sight. “Thank you, Samuel.” Suddenly, a low growl erupted from her stomach. It sounded like a caged animal trying to break free. Her rune pulsed briefly. The girl’s blush only deepened. “Ah!” She squeaked helplessly. Samuel chuckled, “Of course, you are hungry. You still have a lot of recovering to do. I will have something prepared for you.” He motioned to the demi-human. “Eloise, take her to the dining hall. I will join you both shortly.” --- Eloise led Lu to what he assumed was the dining hall. It had a long, heavy table and ten seats in total. She took a place at the head of the table and bounced in place within the chair’s soft cushioning. Within a matter of minutes course after course began to come into the room. Eloise observed closely. The first dish to arrive was elegantly adorned with eggs and caviar. The rabbit grabbed at random one of the numerous forks surrounding her plate. She carved out a bite and held it up to her face. She sniffed at it daintily before setting it back down. “Ew, gross.” She pushed the plate aside and it was recollected by a perplexed maid. The next five courses flopped just as fabulously as the sigel returned each one to the kitchen. The one that finally caught her attention was a petite bite of scone for ‘dessert’. She forewent utensils and popped the nugget of pastry into her mouth. It was not as sweet as she would have liked, but at least it was edible… unlike everything else. Nevertheless, her stomach continued to growl. She looked over to Eloise who seemed to be hiding a perplexed expression behind his hand. LuLu chimed, “Do you have any real food here?” As much as the girl enjoyed sugar, it would not sustain her. What she needed was a ‘real’ meal. Eloise assured her, “We have one of the finest chefs in Gaia at our service. This is real food.” LuLu frowned. “This isn’t what I eat at all. Do you have ink?” She would have even settled for some creativity, too. The dishes had a little bit to feed off of, but everything else in the home was devoid of it. Certainly, the stiff demi-human was absolutely barren of it. Eloise responded with a questioning tone, “I do not understand why you need that to eat. We have some in the meeting room for letter writing, but it is Samuel’s personal supply. I cannot permit you access to it.” So they did have ink, but this guy was hogging it all? Now she was getting agitated. LuLu pushed her seat away from the table and its legs screeched noisily on the tile as she overshot the carpet entirely. She mumbled, “I will find it. It is just ink, jeez.” He closed her eyes and could feel herself being drawn to a nearby room like an irresistible aroma was tugging her forward. She moved past the demi-human and to where she could feel the ink lurking. Eloise was on her heels though. He beckoned to the rabbit, “Halt, you cannot go in there.” However, his words fell on deaf ears as she continued her path. He became more adamant, “Return to the dining room at once. Samuel will be expecting you any moment!” By now, the rabbit had already burst into the meeting room. She could sense exactly where the ink was hiding. It was atop one of the high shelfs. The girl fluttered up and reached for her precious vial of life-force, but it was just out of reach. She stretched her body even further and pumped her wings mightily to gain a few extra inches of height. “Wait!” The taller man called after her. He quickly strode towards her to put an end to her shenanigans. The rabbit’s gaze broke away from her task for a moment to look back at him. At the same time, the inkwell was bumped by her searching hand and fell from the shelf. A horrified expression crossed Eloise’s face as ink splattered across the pristine afghan carpet under her. LuLu managed an indifferent ‘oops’. She was more upset that Eloise had stood between her and a meal rather than the fact she had singlehandedly ruined what was likely an irreplaceable heirloom of Samuel’s. She spun on her heel to face the demi-human completely, “Way to go, Stupid!” Eloise’s jaw stood agape. All the composure dissolved from his face as it scrunched into an ugly grimace. “You refuse to listen and claim I am stupid? You are an ill-mannered brat!” He jabbed an accusatory finger at her. Just at that moment, Samuel stepped into the room. Judging by the steely gaze he had locked onto his bodyguard, he had overheard the last parts of their exchange. He gave one flippant glance at the stain on the carpet before he spoke. His stoic voice took on a gravely harshness, “Explain what happened here. Now.” LuLu began to speak, but Samuel put her words to rest with a single raise of his hand. He continued, “Eloise, what happened?” Eloise stood firm, “She would not heed me, Sir. She managed this mess all on her own. Forgive me, but I have reservation about this girl.” His voice became more hushed as he continued, “She is not who you think she is.” Samuel grew absolutely livid as his bodyguard’s words. His ice blue eyes went alight with fury. Even though it was not directed at Lu, she still felt the chill in his gaze. He seethed, “Are any of us exactly what we seem? Your reservations about this woman are worthless to me. Keep in line Eloise or the rest of you will soon become worthless to me, too.” Eloise seemed at a loss. The demi-human knew he was defeated and simply bowed his head in surrender to his employer. Samuel directed the taller man to the exit, “Leave us now and never question my decisions again.” Eloise followed the man’s orders and left the room. LuLu stood back in awe at the altercation. She had not seen Samuel with such sharpness, yet. She did not know the gentleman was capable of such biting and formidable words. The rabbit glanced down at the carpet. She stooped down and placed a palm against the fabric. The inky pigment was slicked away as she absorbed her meal. It was not as good as fresh, but it would suffice. She approached Samuel uncertainly. “I wanted food. I did not mean for Eloise to get in trouble. I can leave, too.” She gave her wings a powerful flap, “I am feeling better already. I can go home.” Samuel’s anger melted away as he addressed the sigel. His voice was still a bit gruff around the edges, “Nonsense!” He cleared his throat, “You are not completely healed. It is a risk if those thugs find you again before you can defend yourself. Please bear with me, Scarlet.” He crouched down to her height and brushed a hand over her cheek. He asked humbly, “Will you stay with me?” Samuel’s statement reminded the sigel of Joshua and how much anxiety she had caused him due to her boxing. At that time, she had refused her guardian’s help because he had made her feel like a child who was incapable of handling the consequences of her actions. However, Samuel was different. Where Josh had been unyielding and overbearing, Samuel was allowing her a choice. As much as Lu hated to accept the fact she was injured and needed help, she recognized that she had taken a huge amount of punishment from her fight in the alley. A single vial of ink would not remedy it all. She also needed time to recover. She agreed, “I will stay.” Samuel breathed a sigh of relief, “Thank you, Scarlet. I promised you that I would tend to everything. And, I will.” He consoled her in a hush, “You do not need to worry about anything while you are here. I will make sure you have all that you need to heal and become even stronger.” Samuel rose up and brushed off his slacks, “I advise you to avoid visiting those you care about for now. Until I can learn more about the men who assaulted you and where they might be hiding. It would be safer for everyone that way.” As he exited the room he offered one last statement, “It is your choice in whether you follow that advice though, Scarlet.” He did not look back at the sigel. He already knew what her decision would be. LuLu comprehended his concerns because she shared them. She did not want to put Selene or Joshua in danger. The girl addressed the empty room, “I understand.” Even if there was going to be some bumping of heads as she settled in, LuLu could handle it until she was recovered. Eloise would just have to stay out of her way! SOLO

Growing PainsWho: LuLu and Joshua (phone call) When: Morning Where: N/A Weather: Winter Status: Complete Post-note:LuLu emitted a small giggle as blood rushed to her head. The whole room was flipped upside-down and she could feel her ears start to pound softly because of it. The sigel was sprawled out on her bed. Her upper body hung precariously off the edge so that the top of her head nearly hit the plush carpet. The rabbit mused that the woodcarving on her vanity almost looked like a grumpy face from this angle. Kind of like the looks Eloise shot at her when he thought she was not looking. Her eyes darted around to find other object to muse over. The girl had already accomplished both breakfast and an early morning workout. However, that had only succeeded in wasting an hour or two of her day. Nearly twenty two hours still stretched out before her, and this is how Lu had chosen to spend the remainder of her time. LuLu would not admit it just yet, but she was starting to get bored of being holed up at Samuel’s mansion. Her cellphone suddenly chirped. She glanced to the bedside table where it was perched, its screen flashing as a call came through. The girl reached for the device but her arm was a few inches too short to navigate the distance between her and the precious device. LuLu sighed and regrouped. She coiled back before her whole body sprung forward in a long arch. She made a second attempt at procuring the phone, and she was so close. Her fingertips stretched forward. Lu felt her muscles beginning to strain. Suddenly, she noticed her half torso had started slipping off the bed but was too late to stop it. The sigel flopped unceremoniously onto the floor with a thud and some cursing. She rubbed her bumped head as she floated to the table and picked up her phone. It displayed a missed call. She sighed, “Josh.” She had only been communicating with her guardian through occasional texts and correspondences via Eloise. It had been a few weeks since she had spoken to him in person. The distance had been intentional as it assured that the boy would stay safe from the Hulk’s gang of thug and also offered her a reprieve from Joshua’s mother hen disposition. As expected, despite Lu’s explanations of why she was flying under the radar, he had been rather persistent in keeping their line of communication open. She had let the boy know multiple times that she was in still one piece, if not a little beaten up. Regardless, Lu was certain he was inevitably going to ask her, once again, if she was in any danger at the mansion. The sigel was also positive that Josh had a maelstrom of questions he was waiting for just the right moment to ask. Her phone buzzed in her hand, a voicemail. She opened the home screen then navigated to the message her guardian had left for her. It started with a small, hesitant ‘Hi’ and continued from there- “I hope you are doing well, Lu. It is pretty quiet around here. Definitely not as many late night bakery runs going on lately. I think my coloring is getting rusty, too. Maybe I should join an art class to stay in practice. What do you think? Anyway, just wanted to say hello and let you know thatImissyou. Well, goodbye -” Joshua had grown flustered towards before the message abruptly cut off. LuLu groaned loudly into her empty room, “UUUUGH! Why is he such a loser?!” LuLu hopped onto her bed and her face flopped carelessly into a pillow so she could continue screeching. Josh was too easy to read. The way he wore his heart on his sleeve made him agonizingly candid. He was worried about her. Moreover, it was obvious that he missed her. It tugged softly at her heartstrings. The rabbit looked up from her pillow. Her finger swiped over the call-back button. If she ignored his message, it would be like kicking a sweet, albeit insistent, puppy. Her guardian’s voice burst to life, “LuLu! I thought you might have been busy!” Joshua knew that Lu was the type of person who liked to keep herself occupied. It was always a struggle to get ahold of her when she was away from home. He was actually a little bit shocked it had only taken one voicemail today. Joshua continued, “Think you can make some time?” He sounded eager for her response. LuLu twirled a blonde lock of hair idly around a manicured finger. She let the pause draw out a few seconds longer than necessary before she answered, “I am busy. But, this can be a favor.” An impish glimmer in her voice gave away the smirk spread across her lips. She glanced around her room for a moment. The walls were cast in a sleepy twilight as heavy curtains blocked a good portion of the daylight from entering, and LuLu had fought off more yawns that she could count today alone. So what if she had been lazing around for the past thirty minutes? Her guardian did not need to know that little fact. As far as he knew, her attention was in high demand. She continued, “I have a few minutes.” Josh responded, “Thank you for making the time!” He gasped in mock gratitude. “I am sure you have some bigwig you could be attending to. Typical mansion stuff, right?” He chuckled. “Can send me some more pics later? I want to see some more of the hedge maze.” The boy then started to ramble on about some obscure pop culture movie reference, and the rabbit’s attention divided elsewhere. By the time she paid him mind again, Josh had gone on to muttering something about her not getting lost outside in the snow. LuLu rolled her eyes. She chose overlook that it had not snowed for the past week. She interrupted her guardian with a soft huff. “Is that all you wanted to ask about? I can get you more pictures.” The sigel had already sent him a plethora of selfies and videos when she first arrived. Just how many pictures of jacuzzi tubs, pools, and saunas did this boy need?! Josh grew more boisterous, “Of course not! I have plenty more questions.” LuLu cringed on the other end of the line. The sigel almost wished he would go back to chatting about hedge mazes rather than continue the conversation in the direction it was now heading. But, she could see it approaching, the interrogation she had been long dreading. Josh continued, “For starters, how is your arm healing up, Lu?” He seemed to be taking the roundabout approach and was starting off with the easy answers for now. Lu rose from her bed as she realized there was actually something she had forgotten to share with her guardian! The girl had received some good news a few days ago from the doctor Samuel had visiting her. She squeaked to Joshua, “It is doing better!” She had been assured everything was coming together nicely, and LuLu’s heavy splint had been traded out for a lighter brace that was easily removable. The rabbit was grateful for the de-bulking. Altogether, it made things feel a little less daunting. She assured Joshua nonchalantly, “Almost healed.” The rabbit’s ears perked as there was a sudden, sharp intake of air on the other end of the line. Joshua was hiding his excitement poorly, “So you will be coming back home soon?!” The sigel could already picture the big grin plastered on his face. That thought had not occurred to the sigel just yet. She had agreed with Samuel that she should stay until her arm was better, but what would she do after that promise was fulfilled? She snorted softly, “Maybe I can stay here?” The girl waited for her guardian’s response. Sure enough, her keen ears picked up on Josh shifting in his seat and clearing his throat uneasily. Lu continued, “Just kidding.” Her voice wavered in a singsong chime. “I still have some healing to do before I can go.” Joshua said tersely, “I see.” Though it was meant as a jest, LuLu’s comment had left him nervous. He knew that she was spending a good deal of time with a mysterious man named Samuel, and he wondered what influence Samuel was having on LuLu. The gentleman was a little too mystifying for Joshua’s comfort. The boy was naturally curious and always had a tendency to seek out answers to the unknown. The quality served him well as a journalist, but tended to perturb his raevan whenever he started one of these games of twenty questions with her. Unbeknownst to the rabbit, he had already done a little snooping on Samuel. Well, more of an exhaustive investigation. Despite his connection with other journalists, Josh had not been able to uncover much on the guy other than he was heinously wealthy and owned more of Gaia that any one person probably should. Saying Samuel was influential would be a gross understatement. If he could manipulate that many businesses, Josh was certain he could easily twist a young girl around his little finger. Josh continued to pry, “So, tell me more about this Samuel guy. Has he done anything weird to you?” LuLu shrieked, “Shut up!” Josh had taken the conversation in a complete 180. Now he was being way too direct! The sigel could feel a flush rising to her cheeks at her guardian’s insinuation. Her wings flapped with distress. “Never say that again! He is a good man.” Her voice cracked, “Get your head out of the gutter. You are acting like the pervert.” Josh sniggered into the receiver. “Fine, fine. I believe you. Calm down, jeez.” He chose to drop the subject. He still wanted to ask LuLu a few more questions, and if he upset her it would likely end up cutting their conversation short. “I am glad he is treating you well and helping out.” Whether or not he was happy about how Samuel was likely convincing Lu to stay holed up in his mansion was a different discussion altogether. LuLu huffed, “I am calm.” The sigel smoothed out the bristled hair on her ears and her wings slowly tucked back against her shoulder blades. She continued, “Samuel is generous, even though it was my fault. I put myself into a bad situation.” Josh sighed, “Well, you have been making risky decisions for a while.” He had been persistent about giving the girl a piece of his mind. However, the more he tried to help his sigel make good choices, the more she pushed back. It was starting to feel like hitting his head against a wall every day. “If you followed my advice you probably would not have ended up with a broken arm.” Lu pouted and replied, "Probably not. But, I do not learn my lessons easily." The comment earned a hearty laugh from her guardian. A truer statement had never been spoken before by the rabbit. Actions often speak louder than words. At the end of the day, the girl had needed a hard hit to make the message finally stick. Though she could not have predicted that the Hulk would come after her for revenge, LuLu had earned his grudge fairly through her decisions. Josh was right. She ultimately had herself to blame for putting her safety in jeopardy. Her guardian had been adamant that she would get seriously injured at one point or another, and his prediction had come to fruition. The rabbit glanced down at her arm and gave her fingers a flex. The joints no longer ached as they had when the injury was still fresh. LuLu could still remember clearly the sparks of pain that lit up her nerves the day after her run in with the Hulk’s gang. Despite this, if the rabbit could go back in time, she would not change a thing. Her first competitive victory against the Hulk was an irreplaceable memory and had paved the way for so much to happen to the sigel. Though it had been risky, LuLu was thankful for boxing and Knockout. The whole experience had impacted her so much. Her guardian chose to focus on the negative, but the sigel saw the positive changes it had imparted on her. Never in her life had she felt more powerful and self-assured than when she was in the ring. If it took a fractured wrist to achieve that feeling, then she would gladly do it all over again. Josh might have been correct that her perilous behavior would result in her harm, but if she had followed his words to the dot she would have missed out on all of it. The sigel murmured to Josh, "I ignore most of your advice.” The boy snorted. In his opinion, frankly, she ignored all of it. She continued, “I hear it all, though. Some of it is good. I know it could save me grief if I followed it.” Joshua emitted a curious hum. “Well, never thought you would admit I have some good suggestions. Are you going to start following them from now on?” He sounded hopeful. LuLu gave a soft purr in thought. “Maybe. Probably the one about not walking home at night. That one is pretty good.” A streak of cynical humor ran through her words. She glanced out the window as she shifted her cellphone from one ear to the other. Her tone grew softer, “You make me feel trapped sometimes. Like, there is only your choice.” The boy had never been oblique when he offered her a life lesson. In fact, he was often downright defensive of his opinions. He had a tendency to be just as stubborn as the rabbit. If she was being honest, it was one of the reasons why LuLu disregarded most of it. She emphasized, “My decisions. I need to make my own decisions.” The boy paused. He reflected on the raevan’s words. The silence between them pressed on, and he could hear her faint breathing on the other line. He had no idea she felt that way. No wonder she had grown so hostile towards him lately. She felt like he had been controlling and unyielding. Those qualities reminded him of someone. His father. “s**t.” The boy cursed under his breath. Josh hadn’t realized that in fighting to protect his raevan’s safety that he had let her autonomy fall to the wayside so badly. The boy frowned deeply. His actions were reminiscent of his father’s manipulation over LuLu years prior. He hated that he had not recognized it sooner. Josh did not want the raevan to feel trapped within her home and family. That is why they left Aekea. Their move was supposed to remove LuLu from a bad environment. But, his recent actions had belittled that purpose. Josh finally spoke again, “Of course.” When he had reprimanded her, the boy thought he had been looking out for the girl’s best interests. However, he now realized he had only succeeded in stifling her. It was now obvious why she was growing so frustrated with him. When he was growing up, Josh had the same exchange with his father. He refused to be as obstinate as that man though. He could do better. Josh would be a guardian who could give his raevan the room she needed to live her own life. LuLu had to explore the world with her own eyes, even if that meant the occasional danger or mistake on her part. Josh continued, “I am sorry, Lu. I did not mean to corner you all this time.” He would try to ease up on his helicopter parenting. However, he did need the raevan to consider her safety more if he was going to relax his hold on the reigns. “When you get injured, you are not the only one who gets hurt. I was worried out of mind when you did not come home.” His voice thinned. It grew frailer as though the boy would be blow over at any moment. LuLu’s brows drew up in concern. She knew Joshua loved her like a father, though she considered him more akin to a meddlesome older brother. Even when he was being stubborn, the boy was still genuine in his care for her. Josh continued, “I do not want to acknowledge that you are growing up. But, you are.” The girl was only nine years old, but she had already been exposed to situations that even he had not yet faced. “I will give you space.” He sighed, “You are smart. Try to stay out of trouble when you can, ok?” LuLu smiled into the phone’s receiver. “Thank you.” The rabbit supposed she could run headfirst into danger a little less often, especially if it saved her guardian some of his already sparse sanity. When she actually felt inclined to listen to him, Josh could say some pretty intelligent stuff. She chimed, “You know, I missed you too.” SOLO

Define OneselfWho: LuLu and Eloise When: Afternoon Where: N/A Weather: Spring Status: Complete Post-note:LuLu had quickly learned that the gym in Samuel’s mansion was nothing to scoff at. Its amenities were on par with some of the places you could purchase memberships at. Though she had never witnessed the house’s enigmatic owner step foot in the facility, it had served as a welcomed distraction on more than one occasion for the sigel. Today was just another one of those blissful days. Her visits to the gym typically included a number exercises that Selene and Franco had taught her. Each one had been pounded into her brain during her training with the dynamic duo and, by now, they were all muscle memory. Of course, LuLu was never lacking in the area of curiosity. She had also been practicing a handful of new moves. After some of her own research, using the magic of Gaiatube, she had discovered a few martial arts techniques that did not require legs. The rabbit was becoming confident that she had the forms perfected. All she needed now was a willing victim to test them out on. Unfortunately, it was difficult to find individuals in the mansion who were eager to take a fist to the face. That being said, LuLu could think of a few men who she would be delighted to get a good hit on. Eloise strolled briskly past the gym’s door as though summoned by LuLu’s sinister thoughts. The girl chirped with glee. She poked her head out of the gym and beckoned to the tall man, “Eloise! I have a question!” Her lips were curled into a wicked smile. The demi-human’s sigh was audible as whatever task he was in the middle of completing was interrupted by the raevan. His gait paused momentarily as he addressed her. “Can this question wait, Miss Scarlet? I have business to attend to which takes priority.” A superficial level of politeness was threaded throughout his words, but his tone made it obvious he wanted little to do with the girl. LuLu perched her chin on the knuckles of one of her hands. She answered, “According to Samuel, I am your top priority.” Her grin widened. “Or, I could tell him you are ignoring me? I do not think he would like that.” An irritated red colored the man’s cheeks. He adjusted his glasses to hide his furrowed brow and cleared his throat before he responded. “I understand. My business can wait then. How can I help you, Miss Scarlet?” He managed to maintain an even tone, barely. It amused the rabbit when she was able to ruffle the somber man’s feathers a little. She continued with a spiteful giggle, “Thank you for freeing your schedule.” She stepped out from behind the door. The rabbit stretched an arm idly over her chest to ease her muscles. She had removed her splint for the time being. The girl was happy that her wrist had healed enough to allow for moments of reprieve from bandaging. LuLu stated pointedly, “I want to spar.” The lights were glinting off of his glasses so she could not read his eyes, but she wanted to imagine they were opened wide in surprise. However, to her disappointment, Eloise’s composure was not any further shaken. He shook his head, “That is not wise. I will not be at fault if you are injured again.” The rabbit snorted softly, “You will not hurt me.” Eloise did not miss a beat in responding, “I beg to differ, Miss Scarlet.” His words caused her heartbeat to quicken. Did he really believe that? Eloise was not a man who joked around and, frankly, she did not think he had a funny bone in his body. However, as far as LuLu knew, the demi-human had never proven this supposed physical prowess to her. He could not even catch up with a trio of thugs that included The Hulk, a literal brick wall who was as slow as they come. It amused her that Eloise was so certain that he could keep up with her. The thought of a challenge caused a shiver to run up her spine. She floated forward, “Fight me.” Her small frame was hardly the kind to intimidate, but the energy she exuded was hostile. The man’s features remained level. “You are not giving me a choice in this matter, are you?” LuLu chimed in a singsong voice, “Nope. Not unless you admit you are too afraid to fight me.” Eloise scoffed, “Hardly the case. Please, let’s finish this quickly so I can return to my other tasks.” He pulled off his coat and began to roll up his sleeves. The man stepped swiftly into the gym with a few long strides. The rabbit was on his heels as she joined him. --- LuLu gasped out for breath but came up short as an arm enclosed around her windpipe. Eloise had her locked in a chokehold. Her nails dug into his bicep, and she felt the muscle tense against her throat. Her next mouthful of air drew in even shallower. The rabbit’s lungs were starting to burn. She had to find a way to break his hold before she passed out. The match had started fairly one-sided. LuLu was throwing most of the punches, and Eloise had taken a few superficial blows. He had refused to wear padding, but appeared to be rolling with the hits despite having nothing to dampen them. He kept up an even pace as the rabbit enclosed on him. The tables turned on LuLu, however, when the girl moved close enough to show off one of her new grappling techniques. It appeared the demi-human had another plan in mind. She tried to lock his leg in place and throw him off balance, but Eloise countered her with an unexpected amount of speed and used the momentum to apply his own move. And, that is how the sigel wound up in her current predicament. LuLu emitted another wheezy exhale. The demi-human had never let on to the fact he also knew martial arts. Still, even with these circumstances, the sigel believed she could manage a win. She stopped struggling and tried to calm herself. The rabbit needed to conserve energy. She had to keep her wits and think things through. She had gotten herself into this situation. Now, how to get out of it? That’s it! The rabbit caught sight of the two of them in one of mirrors hung on the gym’s walls. She could see all of Eloise’s unguarded points. Her elbow thrust back and connected with his ribs. The man gritted his teeth. He was in pain, but his grip remained firm. She struck again with similar effects. The raevan was in shock. Any other person would have doubled over, but the demi-human had not budged. LuLu growled in frustration. This would be a cinch if she did not need to rely solely on her upper body to attack. He had so many other areas open. If only she had legs! She could stomp on his feet or go for other vital targets. However, with only her arms, she was at a disadvantage. Eloise rumbled into her ear, “Give up.” He could tell it would not be much longer now. What breathes LuLu could take were coming out in short pants. She was starved for oxygen at this point. LuLu choked out, “N-no!” She would not give up. Eloise could not win! But, all she had was her stupid arms! The girl resigned to what limited moves she could perform. Her elbow dug into his stomach until he was forced to hunch forward. She took the opportunity to swipe the demi-human’s glasses off. His spectacles clattered to the ground, and LuLu heard a faint crunch of glass breaking. Eloise released a noise that the sigel had not yet heard before. It was a shrill snarl that made her ears ache. He seethed, “We are ending this now. Submit.” The man was finished toying with the rabbit. His arm sealed around her neck like a vice until it cut off every last bit of her already scant air. In a matter of seconds, LuLu’s lungs were on fire. The rabbit’s vision started to blur. Then it began to tunnel. At last, a thought occurred to her. She was not going to win. LuLu tapped his shoulder in surrender, and Eloise dropped her to the floor none too gently. The man stepped past her limp body and ducked down to retrieve his glasses from the ground. He inspected them and was dissatisfied with what he found. There was a crack along one of the lenses. The man clicked his tongue before replacing his spectacles atop the bridge of his nose. He clucked at the girl, “I hope you are happy with the outcome, Miss Scarlet. This is what happens when you play foolish games.” LuLu was still on the mat trying to find her voice. She took in a deep breath and filled her lungs to the brim with fresh air. After a moment, she responded in a shaky mumble, “It was unfair. I cannot grapple without legs. I am a boxer.” Eloise began to place his coat back on. He stated tersely, “You were the one who pulled out a grappling move first, and I did not use my legs once to defeat you.” He tidied up the last button and brushed off the fabric as he continued, “You are simply a poor fighter who lacks refinement.” LuLu rose up from the floor. Her amethyst eyes focused a scathing glare on the man. She was not fond of his attitude. And, she was definitely not a poor fighter by typical standards. It raised a question. Why had Eloise been hiding his fighting ability? And, if he could trample over Lu, why had he been unable to take down a bunch of common thugs? The sigel retorted, “I had a disadvantage.” Eloise countered the girl, “There is no such thing.” LuLu’s glare softened and she looked on in confusion as the demi-human bent down. He carefully rolled up the cuff on one of his pants legs into a few neat folds. The girl’s eyes widened at what she was met with. A steal rod protruded from his joint rather than the typical flesh and bone that was expected. The rod was covered in formed plastic to create a vague leg shape that filled out the slacks. The artificial limb continued up past the area he had exposed to her. She assumed it ended around his knee, but could not be certain. The rabbit felt some of her ire subside. She gulped softly, “I did not realize.” LuLu bit her lip anxiously, “You have a disadvantage, too.” Eloise quickly pulled down his pants leg. He rose to his feet and frowned at the rabbit. “Do not compare me to yourself, Miss Scarlet. I do not have a disadvantage.” The man adjusted his glasses, “I do not make excuses for weakness. I overcome it. Whereas, you have let your weakness define you.” LuLu looked away. Her arms crossed over her chest. Although she hated to admit it, Eloise did have a point. During their fight, she was momentarily caught up by her absence of a lower body. She believed that was the cause of her inability to break his guard. She had quickly resigned to her lack of legs as a weakness. Perhaps that mentality had been her downfall. If she had not focused on it, she might have been able to think of another plan. Eloise continued, “Samuel thinks you are something amazing, but I see what you truly are. You will disappoint him one day. The same way you have disappointed me.” LuLu flinched at his words. What did Eloise mean by them? SOLO

Being the Bad GuyWho: LuLu and a mysterious woman When: Afternoon Where: N/A Weather: Spring Status: Complete Post-note:Now that the weather was warming up, numerous beachside stalls had reopened at the Gambino ports for the upcoming season. The small shops sold handmade goods, produce, and other novel trinkets. Even performers would show up from time to time to hustle for tips on the main avenue. The whole spectacle drew in tourists, LuLu included. Though the rabbit was enjoying her share of the attractions, she was still maintaining a low profile. A hood pulled over her ears and a pair of sunglasses helped conceal some of her most distinguishing features. Her lack of a lower body was a bit trickier to disguise, but a long skirt was her best solution to the problem. Though crowds pushing in and out of the area helped to draw attention away from the raevan, it also increased the potential that she would run into an acquaintance or two. In between stalls the sigel kept her head down and was on alert for any undesirable encounters. LuLu was appraising an etched bone necklace when the thunderous roar of an engine’s exhaust reverberated. Its nonstop rumble eventually pulled her attention away. She returned the necklace to its display. Other vacationers standing nearby were cursing under their breath as the car ripped down the street. The rabbit peeked over shoulders to get a better look at the noisy vehicle that was attempting to put a damper on everyone’s good time. A red sports car was the culprit of the commotion. Fortunately, it had already swerved into one of the parking lots and its bellowing engine had shortly cut off. LuLu was finally able to get a better look at it. Aside from the flamboyant paintjob, it was nearly identical to some of the expensive cars parked in Samuel’s garage. An intricate decal airbrushed onto its hood also helped set it apart. Precise black lines formed a stylized devil’s head. The longer she stared at the flashy design, the more LuLu developed a feeling of dejavu. Something about the car was nagging at the back of the rabbit’s brain. Her eyes grew wider as a memory suddenly resurfaced. Selene had mentioned something about a red car with a devil on the hood before. She had used those traits to describe the car that hit Franco. Obviously, there were not many cars that fit those specifications in Gaia. The rabbit felt her heartbeat speed up. Her teeth clamped together tightly. This had to be the guy. The sigel tugged the drawstrings on her hood tighter and slipped away from the stall she had been lurking near. She felt her body moving of its own will, gravitating closer to the unidentified driver. Her pace sped up as the distance between them inched closed. Lu’s promise to Josh was still fresh in her mind. The rabbit had agreed to steer clear of danger that was avoidable. But, in her mind, this encounter was one that LuLu could not let slip by. She had an opportunity to confront the a*****e who hit her dear friend and left him for dead. Just the recollection of what this person had put Franco through made the rabbit’s blood boil all over again. LuLu was barely holding herself back from running in headfirst. The girl clenched and unclenched her fists a few times to ease her anger. She knew she had to be smarter about the situations she put herself in. Stealth was never going to be her strongpoint, but it was her ally in this instant. If she was lucky she might overhear something incriminating from the driver or could get a jump on them. LuLu slowed her pace back down to a slow stroll as she approached the lot the red car was parked in. The rabbit circled until she found a partition of bushes to spy from. To her surprise, a woman emerged from the vehicle and perched her body against the door. LuLu did not really know who exactly she had been expecting as the car’s owner. However, a middle aged woman was probably not it. She was garbed in a colorful dress at least one size too small and a matching pair of kitten heels. The mystery woman was plugging away at her phone and only paused from her typing to glance up at the port’s entrance. LuLu titled her head curiously as she concluded that the woman was waiting for someone else. It was not long before a man approached the woman. He started their conversation and after a moment they were chuckling to one another. Perhaps they were friends? LuLu tried to conclude what she could from eavesdropping on their brief interaction. The woman soon nudged her counterpart along. The rabbit tailed the pair as they exited the parking lot and wandered down a nearby alley. She lost sight of the two in the dim lighting that the tall buildings around them afforded. The jingle of something metallic clued her in on where they might have disappeared to. The noise came from around a corner. The rabbit crouched down. She slyly peeked around the turn and saw that it dead ended into a brick wall. She also found her two suspects. The man was leaning into the wall while the woman was crouched down, in a similar position to herself. LuLu squinted but could not make out much of what was going on in the shadows. Unfortunately, while she had been gifted with excellent hearing, her sight was rather ordinary. She shifted from her position to get a better look. The rabbit prowled discretely until the couple came into full view. It was a startling view. The sigel clamped a hand over her mouth to choke her gasp. LuLu had run across enough of We’rika’s dirty magazines to have an idea of what she was witnessing. A deep flush colored the sigel’s cheeks and she carefully floated back around the corner and then out of the alley altogether. She was courteous enough to let them finish their business in peace, and she wouldn’t dare interrupt what was already going on. The rabbit stood watch nearby as she waited. The man was the first to emerge from the alley. The way he was adjusting his belt and the blissful look on his face made the sigel cringe inwardly. The woman stepped down the backstreet a short time after. She was tucking something away into her small handbag and looked distracted. The sigel concluded it was as good a time as any to make her move. At least, she could catch the other off guard. The rabbit step out int the alley. She quickly placed herself between the woman and her exit. LuLu crossed her arms over her chest and jutted her chin up. She declared sternly, “I have questions for you.” She peered down her nose at the woman, “Is that red car yours? The one with the devil on the hood.” The woman appeared confused at first. She tilted her head then looked the raevan up and down with one slow scan. Her blue-green eyes narrowed slightly. The woman’s posture shifted. Her stance squared. The woman responded with a playful rumble, “You are barking up the wrong tree, little girl.” She waved the rabbit aside with a snort, “I do not have to answer anything.” The woman resumed her slinky walk with a hastened pace. The sigel flared her wings to their full span, but her intimidation did not break the woman’s stride. Her heels continued to hammer into the pavement as she approached LuLu. The sigel bared her teeth with a soft snarl and pushed her palm out at the woman to halt her advance. LuLu rumbled, “Stop!” Her wings flapped in warning. “Answer my question. Now.” The woman responded with a shrill tittering. She slowed her advance before shifting her weight to one leg. She popped her hip to the side and perched one of her hand atop it. She snapped her fingers at the raevan, “I am not afraid of you, twirp.” She motioned with her hand once more for LuLu to get out of her way. “Step aside. I have better things to do than play with you.” LuLu frowned as woman addressed her like someone would a misbehaving puppy. She persisted despite the woman’s resistance, “I am not moving until you answer.” The girl stood in place firmly. The woman’s expression grew bewildered as though she could not fathom why LuLu would still be blocking her path. She already expressed clearly she had nothing more to say to the young girl. She clicked her tongue and made sure to emphasize her point this time around, “I told you, I am NOT answering your stupid questions.” She stabbed a finger at the raevan and dropped the coy lull in her voice. “Quit wasting my time!” Her words were sharp enough to cut. The woman then moved to step past LuLu. The rabbit remained unfazed, however. She shifted so that her half body thwarted the woman’s escape. Their shoulders bumped together and the woman bounced back slightly. LuLu heard her swear under her breath. With the path once again blocked, LuLu continued, “Were you involved in any accidents recently?” She pressed in even closer to the woman. An irritated growl escaped from deep in the woman’s throat. She snapped at the rabbit, “Get out of my way!” She threw her arms out to shove LuLu aside. However, she was greeted with an unexpected resistance from the girl’s small frame. The sigel’s rune pulsed with a bright purple as she stood her ground. The woman’s eyes narrowed into a frustrated glower. She barked furiously, “Move!” Her heels clicked noisily as she stepped back and then threw her whole body into her next push. The rabbit easily sidestepped to evade the attack. The woman emitted an unpleasant grunt as she lost balance and crashed onto the grimy pavement. LuLu floated closer once again. For a fleeting moment, she almost asked the woman if she was ok. However, the sigel quickly recalled why she was interrogating her in the first place. This woman could very well be the person who put Franco into a coma. The rabbit asked instead, “Are you ready to talk now?” The woman hissed between her teeth. She was clutching at her knee. LuLu could see that it was pretty badly skinned and her tights had torn. Nevertheless, the woman was still remaining tight lipped. She replied, “Go to hell!” The woman then lashed out at LuLu with an open hand. LuLu caught the limb in a tight vice before it landed. Her lips drew into a thin line as she glared at the woman who had now tried to attack her three times. Just for asking a few straightforward questions. LuLu’s patience was growing thin. The girl’s grip tightened on the woman. She commented bitterly, “I am getting tired of this game.” Her tattoos shifted in the dim light, extending into sharper lines as her temper became shorter. The woman shrieked at the rabbit as she felt a steely pressure encircling her thin wrist. “You are hurting me, you b***h!” She reached down and grabbed for her purse. The woman was biting at her lip nervously. Her eyes fluttered down to look for something in the bag. LuLu followed the woman’s gaze with unease. The woman was already reaching her free arm into the leather clutch to grab at something. LuLu saw the object glint in the low light. The rabbit suddenly shifted her weight and threw the woman face first to the ground. The woman cried out as she hit the pavement at full force and bounced against it. Her handbag was knocked loose and the rabbit immediately threw it away from her. A small handgun tumbled out from inside. LuLu lowered her brows into a furious glower. Her sweetly soprano voice cracked, “You were about to use that on me! What is wrong with you?!” The sigel braced her body against the other’s to push her head further into the ground beneath them. She heard the woman grumble as her face was pressed into the asphalt. Though Lu’s new techniques had not worked on Eloise, they appeared to be very effective against normal individuals. LuLu was fairly certain at this point that the woman was fighting tooth and nail to keep information from her. But, what could be significant enough for her to pull a gun on the rabbit? It had to be related to Franco’s accident. LuLu felt like she was so close to having her answer. This woman was far from innocent, anyone who dealt her kind of ‘business’ in back alleys generally wasn’t, but LuLu needed for her to reveal her connection to Franco. The sigel leaned in close and whispered into the woman’s ear, “I will not stop. Not until you tell me EVERYTHING.” The woman shifted until her mouth was clear of gravel. She giggled mockingly, “I am not telling you anything. You will have to torture me first, and you do not have the balls for that.” The woman rotated her hips and her torso swung upward at the raevan. The woman’s elbow connected with LuLu’s cheek. The rabbit flinched at the sting, but the pain was rather fleeting. Most of the rookies at Knockout packed more heat than this woman. It was obvious she was not a fighter given her sloppy follow through on the strike. In spite of that, this woman was ready for a brawl against the sigel. The woman made a poor choice on her opponent, but she hadn’t realized it yet. However, she would soon learn entirely well of her mistake. It was due time that the rabbit became more forceful in her interrogation technique. LuLu snatched the woman’s arm to stop her swipes. She stretched the limb backwards until she felt little give in the joint. The girl spoke in a heated murmur, “This is your last warning. Will you answer my questions?” The woman hissed, “You think you are so scary.” She shifted against the rabbit and spat out, “You are nothing, little girl! There are much more frightening people than you in this world. Do your worst.” She continued to struggle in the rabbit’s grip. LuLu had hoped it would not come to this. On the other hand, some deep part of her was pleased by how things were going. If this woman was the one who had hit Franco and left him for dead, she deserved what was about to happen to her. The sigel seethed, “You should be afraid of me.” She continued to apply pressure on the woman’s arm, wrenching it slowly back. Her grip compressed on the limb as she cranked the bone tightly within its socket. She was unrelenting even as the woman began screaming. LuLu gave the limb one more twist until she felt a pop. The arm went limp. The woman’s screams rapidly deteriorated into frantic screeching and sobbing. However, LuLu ignored her pleas and rested the entirety of her body against the woman’s back. Her hair brushed against the other’s neck. She stated softly, “You do not know me. Or, what I can do. Have I made my point?” A sardonic smile spread across her lips. Her hand leisurely clamped around the woman’s other arm. “Or, should I make it again?” The rabbit could feel the woman shiver in terror. It was a guttural shudder than wracked her whole body. The woman shrieked, “I did it!” Tears were welling up in her eyes as she made her confession, “He paid me run over your stupid boyfriend.” Her fist struck the ground. “I swear to god, I hope he is a splatter on the pavement!” The woman slumped onto the street panting in exhaustion from her yelling and sobbing. She croaked hollowly, “You should be happy. When he finds out that you know, I am as good as dead anyway.” LuLu felt her jaw tightened as the woman’s admission of guilt sunk in. She had disclosed her actions against Franco, but there was something unsettling about her confession that left the rabbit feeling unsatisfied. She first assumed that what happened to Franco was an accident or the work of one very stupid person. However, it was entirely the opposite; Franco’s incident was pre-conceived and was orchestrated by someone far cleverer than this woman. She was only his pawn. LuLu felt rage and bile bubbling in the pit of her stomach. She gritted out, “Who told you to do it? Who is he?!” She spun the woman around and grabbed her by the throat. “TELL ME.” The woman looked up at the sigel with her hazy green-blue eyes. Her lids were already growing puffy and bruised. She snickered in between her pained whimpers. It was an unpleasant, nasally laugh. The woman responded, “You should have been more careful when making friends, little girl.” She leaned her head back against the ground and continued her aborted little laugh-sobs. LuLu was about to question the woman again, but her ears picked up on a distinct siren blaring in the distance. The police. The sound was coming towards the alley at a breakneck pace. The rabbit glanced down at the woman beneath her. She muttered, “s**t.” She definitely would not look like the good guy in this scenario. The cops would likely not be amenable to her impromptu self-appointment as the city’s vigilante. The sigel quickly pulled away from the woman. She asserted, “This is not over.” LuLu hurriedly floated out of the alley and left the woman behind. SOLO

Shades of Red, Shades of GrayWho: LuLu and Samuel When: Morning Where: N/A Weather: Spring Status: Complete Post-note:It looked like the rabbit had managed a clean getaway after her narrow escape from police custody. LuLu made her return to Samuel’s mansion later that evening. Fortunately, she managed to bypass the man altogether. She was thankful they did not cross paths as she did not know how to start explaining where she had disappeared to that morning. Her run in with the unnamed woman was by chance. It had also gone in an unexpected direction. The woman’s final words were still playing over in her head. How had she made a mistake in choosing her friends? The statement still confused the sigel. LuLu thought she was a fairly decent judge of character. After all, she was not the most innocent person herself so she had some idea of how deceitful people act. The woman’s caution had left the rabbit unsettled. Someone close to her had planned the attack on Franco. But, the rabbit was at a loss for who could be that despicable. Clink-clink-clink. The rabbit shot up from her seat when she heard the front gates rattle in the distance. It was well past nightfall. Samuel did not typically expect visitors this late. The girl’s curiosity immediately piqued. She sat up completely and drew closer to her balcony’s doors. She peeked through the thick glass, past the garden, and to the front courtyard. It looked like a car was pulling into the driveway. However, its headlights were cut off. It was almost impossible to make out any details given that the sky was a starless bruised blue. LuLu squinted and pressed her forehead against the clear pane separating her from outside. Her eyes started to adjust to the dark. She could see that it was a pitch black sports car. The girl’s heart skipped a beat. There was a design on its hood. Even though it was a muddled splotch at this distance there was something uncannily familiar about it. It was then that her eyes shifted focus and clashed with a fierce glint of red. Eloise was down in the courtyard, too, and was waving the car into a garage. However, despite being absorbed with directing the vehicle, his gaze remained locked with hers. He pinned her down with the weight of his stare and never once moved his attention back to the car. LuLu jerked back from the window. Her heart was now pounding in her chest. The demi-human had exuded ire at her. She felt the threat. The girl knew she had gotten a glimpse of something that was not meant to see. ---- The following morning, curiosity and fear had taken up a ferocious battle within the girl’s brain. Eloise’s glare had been far from welcoming. However, he had never been a particularly friendly to her either. There was still an enormous chance that this was all in her head and Samuel was simply adding a new car to his already impressive collection. Even if it was highly unusual behavior, there will still many unknowns. She had not caught anyone red handed, just yet. LuLu decided that she needed more answers. She would explore Samuel’s garage and finally put all this uncertainty to rest. It was still fairly early in the morning when the sigel left her room to venture downstairs. The whole mansion was settled into a hush considering the events of yesterday. The only noise was a gentle whoosh from her ribbon gliding across the hardwood and tile. LuLu slipped outside through one of the many doors that led to the garden. She would need to cross it in order to get to the garage. With the weather warming up, the plants outside were coming back to life. It was the rabbit’s first time seeing the garden in some semblance of its full glory. When she had agreed to stay at Samuel’s mansion it was still the middle of winter. At that time, most of the greenery was muted or covered up by a blanket of white. However, now the snow had melted. The rich colors that had been hiding underneath were now displayed. The sigel floated along a cobblestone path. The sun was just peaking over the horizon and it created a cozy orange glow. The tenderly sculpted topiaries and freshly unfurled blooms were illuminated in the inviting sunlight. LuLu paused for a moment to observe, momentarily forgetting her task. It was then that she noticed another new addition to one of Samuel’s collections. A rose bush had sprung up seemingly overnight in the garden. Its foliage was filled out lushly and dotted with deep burgundy flowers. The plot of dirt underneath was mounded high and still looked soft as if it had just been planted. The shrub stood tall and proud, perfectly fitting in as another spectacle to behold. The rabbit shook her head softly and pulled her attention away from the garden. She continued on towards the garage. LuLu approached the side of the windowless building. It seemed silly to even try, but the girl tested the garage’s only door. Of course, Eloise was not an idiot and it was bolted shut tightly. LuLu grumbled dismissively, however. There was more than one way to get things done. She just might have to put in more work than she had first thought. The sigel returned to the front of the building. Her eyes scanned along the large, slatted sheets the garage door was comprised of. LuLu moved closer. She tapped one of her knuckles experimentally against the metal. It seemed pretty thin, like aluminum. It could not be all that heavy. She quickly concluded that this would be her best point of entry. The rabbit inhaled deeply and stooped her body down. Her lithe fingers squeezed in between the scant space separating the garage door and the driveway. They threaded themselves under until her palms made contact with the cool surface of the metal. Her grip was firm. LuLu heaved upwards with a strong tug. She managed to pry the door open wider by a few meager centimeters. It would not be enough though. Maybe a mouse could fit through now, but she needed a gap large enough for her petite frame. LuLu steadied herself again. She adjusted her grip on the door. The girl inhaled slowly understanding that she would have to give it her all on this next attempt. Anything less would not work. Her fingers flexed mightily. Tension shot up her forearms, biceps, and shoulders until it felt like the tendons may pop at any moment. The girl gave a powerful heave and the door climbed higher by a few inches, but it was still not where she needed it to be. LuLu hissed from behind her clenched teeth. Her arms were trembling and her muscles were burning, but she had to give it one last try. The sigel growled out as she swung her whole body up into her movement. Her efforts paid off as the garage door slid open by another foot. It looked like just enough room for LuLu to squeeze in. The girl immediately dropped to the ground. She carefully tucked her wings against her shoulder blades. Then she flattened herself out against the pavement. LuLu crawled forward slowly inch by excruciating inch, and her rune pulsed brightly from her struggle. She continued even as her back grazed the lip of the door, until she knew she had cleared it. The rabbit pulled herself up from the floor and huffed tiredly. She had succeeded, but there was still more work to be done. The sigel now had to investigate this new car Samuel had acquired. LuLu spotted the vehicle tucked away in a back corner of the building. It was hidden by a number of other cars. She floated past them and closer to the one in question. As she rounded past an antique compact painted as brightly as a jewel, her eyes could finally hone in on the black sports car. A caricature of a demon stared back at her. With some unease, she realized she had identified the vehicle correctly. It raised a new question. Why would Samuel have this car, and where was its previous owner? The woman’s words echoed momentarily in her head again. You made a mistake when choosing your friends. The girl approached the sports car to examine it more carefully. It looked pristine, as it had in the parking lot only hours ago. She circled around the vehicle until she reached the back where a flash of crimson caused her to pause. A part of the bumper was painted with a streak of red that had not been there before. She reached forward to glide a finger over the spot. LuLu was surprised to discover that it was still wet. The liquid was viscous like semi-dried ink. As she brought the finger to her face, she could see the color better. It was a deep, rusty red that was similar to some of the inks she had sampled in the past. Curiously, she brought the red coated digit to her lips and licked at it. She froze in place. Her eyes grew wide as the taste of iron suddenly filled her mouth. This was blood. Upon the gruesome finding, she frantically began to wipe her hand onto her shirt. She twisted her trembling fingers into the fabric and held her breath. The blood had to be coming from somewhere… or, rather, someone. LuLu brought her shaking grip to the trunk of the car. Her fingers clutched against the latch until the door sprung open. The rabbit closed her eyes slightly; afraid of what she might see. Inside the trunk was a dried splotch of blood that nearly took up the entirety of the space. In the far corner was something that made LuLu’s blood run cold; a single kitten heel that she recognized all too well. And, now she understood what the woman had meant by her words. Her friend, Samuel, was more than what he seemed. LuLu slid back out of the garage and shut it behind her so that it looked like nothing was out of place. However, the girl knew that reality was far from picture perfect. The rabbit had made a shocking discovery, and everything was quickly becoming a mess now. She approached the garden once more, floating aimlessly as she tried to decipher that knowledge she had been affronted with. Her eyes settled again on the new plot that had appeared overnight. The way the rose bush bulged from the swollen earth made the sigel start to feel sick. LuLu dropped beside it on what would have been her knees. She wondered what she would find if she slipped her hands into freshly disturbed dirt. If she dug deeper how many more secrets would she unearth? Perhaps, a second soiled kitten heel to match the one in the trunk. One of LuLu’s ears swiveled back like a small antenna when she heard one of the mansion’s doors open. Soon, the clicking of dress shoes on gravel and cobblestone echoed from behind her. Samuel’s cool voice called out to her, “Is something wrong, Scarlet?” The sigel felt ice in her veins upon hearing him. The way words roll off his tongue and his little nickname for her had once delighted LuLu, but now the man was making her feel nauseated. His growing proximity was quickly becoming a problem for the girl. She bit back her bile and kept her eyes down. LuLu grasped at one of the roses in front of her. The petals were a murky red that reminded her of the unnamed woman’s blood. The girl responded to the man. “No, I am just admiring the flowers.” The man stepped forward and kneeled down to LuLu’s level. His suit rustled as he drew in close. Despite her dread, the rabbit’s amethyst eyes wandered towards him. He was smiling at her. Despite all he had done, Samuel was wearing a placid grin. He addresses the girl with amusement in his words, “Excellent. I am pleased you noticed them. They are a beautiful addition to my collection.” Without warning, he reached forward and slid his hand over hers. His large palms easily encompassed the rabbit’s. Samuel brought her wrist and the flower she had in her grasp to his face. He breathed in their sweet scent with a hum. “So close to perfection.” He was gentle and calculated with his movements, one might even say affectionate. LuLu had to suppress a grimace. However, despite her maintaining an indifferent expression, she could see the tattoos on her arm starting to quiver and change color. The rabbit pulled her hand away from Samuel’s and cupped her palm over the ink before it gave away her disgust. The man emitted a questioning purr when she recoiled from him. Once LuLu met his eyes again, they seemed a bit sharper and more focused than before. Their blue depths were a little bit more frigid. He inquired, “Are you certain there is not something I can help you with? Perhaps a question you want to ask me?” He raised a blond brow at her. LuLu felt her next breath die in her lungs before she could complete her exhale. Did he know that she had snooped around the garage? If he did, she was not confident in the punishment that would be in store for her for her nosiness. LuLu hoped she would not meet the same fate as the unnamed woman from the alley. The rabbit mustered up some confidence from deep within as she answered him. It was enough to prevent her voice from shaking as she spoke, “Actually, there is something I want to ask.” Her shoulders tensed as the question stood at the tip of her tongue. It was now or never. LuLu questioned, “Samuel, what exactly is your line of work?” The man’s lips curled into a smile that was all sharp canines like a cat that had caught the canary. Samuel shifted his weight and stood again, “I thought you would never ask, dear Scarlet.” He reached out to help the rabbit up. The girl gave one last anxious glance at the rose bush and its peculiar plot before she let herself be pulled away. She took the man’s hand gingerly and floated back up to her full height, the top of her head coming up to Samuel’s shoulders. The man continued, “I have done well for myself in the business of giving and taking.” LuLu echoed his words, “Giving and taking?” She withdrew her hand from his grasp once again. She let it settle at her side and wished the feeling of her skin squirming would subside. The rabbit asked, “What does that mean?” Her brow had scrunched up in confusion. The man responded, “Not everyone deserves what they have. I enjoy evening the odds.” Samuel had wasted no time in answering. However, his response was still fairly cryptic in the girl’s opinion. He could sense her bewilderment and reformulated his explanation. “For example, I buy out a monopoly. I take ownership of a few malls and give their employees better wages.” He awaited LuLu’s response. When she nodded in comprehension, he continued, “Or, a politician has his position taken away by circumstance and I step in. I now am given a chance to create change. You are astute Scarlet. I know you understand what this means.” He leveled his icy stare at the girl. LuLu squared her shoulders. A pout formed softly on her lips. Before she could think through her words, she uttered, “It sounds like stealing.” Realizing what she had said, she flinched. Her eyes darted away from Samuel. Unexpectedly, the man gave a hearty chuckle. He adjusted at one of his cuff links and hummed in good humor, “In a sense, I suppose.” LuLu ears perked, “Isn’t that wrong to do?” With his same mirthful tone, he responded, “Do you believe the world is that black and white, Scarlet?” He stepped closer and leaned in. LuLu’s face turned back towards him. She could make out the detail of the fine lines on his face. His expression was still calm and even, but his eyes were bright blue and impassioned. He continued, “Is it wrong if I am helping people by doing it?” LuLu titled her chin up. As much as it frustrated her to admit it, he did have a point. She shook her head and commented, “No, it is not all wrong. No one is all good or all bad.” If anyone understood that morality was composed of numerous shades of gray, it was her. The rabbit had probably been a part of similar schemes in the past, though on a much smaller scale. Stealing extra cookies from bakeries for the neighborhood kids was a far cry from infiltrating governments. However, not everyone thought the way she did. LuLu probed further, “What about the police? What if someone finds out?” Samuel chided the girl gently with a click of his tongue. “What do I have to hide? They know my line of work.” He waved the girl’s comment away with a hand and commented, “I take out a few unsavory characters, I give the city safety, and I am rewarded for it. The police will not interfere in my affairs.” LuLu was starting to have an idea of just how much Samuel was involved in, and it was making her head spin. It made sense now how he was able to coordinate the attempt on Franco’s life whilst keeping it under cover. The rabbit felt her fists balling tightly at her sides. She now kept asking herself why he did it. Samuel’s motive was still unclear. What purpose did taking Franco away from her serve? What right did he have to do this to her and Selene? The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She clenched her teeth and a growl slipped past her lips. Samuel’s voice cut through her thoughts sharply, “This garden will be in a full bloom within a few weeks. You will see, after the spring rain it will flourish.” The subject suddenly changed and it caught LuLu off guard. Her head canted at his words. He rumbled, “Sometime there needs to be a bit of hardship before something truly magnificent can occur.” His gaze then shifted to her. He chilled her to the bone with one piercing look, and LuLu’s anger no longer seemed as white-hot as before. The sigel swayed in place, suddenly deflated. Though it upset her, it did not feel like the time to pry further. Samuel’s patience also seemed to be running short. She did not want to test the man more than she had to in this moment. There would be a better time and place for the rest of her questions. LuLu chimed, “Thank you for explaining Samuel. I think I understand more now.” She offered him a nod of her head before she floated back towards the mansion. --- It was not long after LuLu departed that Eloise slipped out from hiding. He swooped in close to his employer and stood at attention. His full height towered over everything else in the garden Samuel acknowledged him with a nod of his head and a narrowing of his eyes. The man commented tersely, “She knows.” The bodyguard adjusted his glasses so that they sat higher atop the bridge of his nose. He asked dryly, “Will there be a change in plans?” Eloise’s body tensed, as though he was ready to climb into action. Samuel raised a hand to pause his subordinate. He shook his head, “No, I can still convince her.” The man carded another hand through his hair, “We both need time to cool our heads first.” The man’s face was still even and stern. But, the steely glint in his eyes gave away that he was not completely unaffected by the girl. Eloise wore a grimmer expression. He responded, “Understood.” It was not his place to defy Samuel’s commands, though he could easily predict what would unfold. This child, LuLu, was leading his cunning employer down a foolish path. Nevertheless, he would be there to clean up the inevitable mess. SOLO

Make Me An Offer I Cannot RefuseWho: LuLu and Samuel When: Afternoon Where: N/A Weather: Spring Status: Complete Post-note:Samuel was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. LuLu knew all too well what wolfs did to rabbits. Every instinct in LuLu’s body was coiling back like a cornered animal. All of her senses were firing a single message at her in repetition. Run, run, run. Get out of there now! She was overcome with the alarms buzzing in her own head. It felt like a thick miasma fogging her judgement, but the urge to escape was all too pressing for her to ignore it. The girl forwent packing. Instead, she grabbed what scant possessions in the room she could call her own and tossed them into a large bag. LuLu snagged her phone off a bedside table and chucked it into an outside pocket. She swung the bag over her shoulders and made for the door. Emptiness occupied the pit of her stomach. The girl gave the room one last glance. Though, she did not understand why exactly she looked back. Though Samuel had tried to make her feel welcomed, she had never really belonged here. He was a predator who had been biding his time, making her comfortable and waiting for the right moment to pounce. LuLu felt stupid for not realizing it sooner. The girl heard footsteps approach her room. LuLu’s whole body tensed. She backed away from the door until her back hit a wall with a soft thud. A stuttered breathe of air – unintentionally held - escaped her lungs. Knuckles sounded carefully against the threshold and Samuel announced his presence to her in a tender whisper. However, the girl had a sneaking suspicion that this was an act, too. He was not being considerate, he was being cautious. The man did not wait for her permission to enter. He did not need it. His manner was confident, as always. Samuel was a man who had built an empire around himself. He was always in his comfort zone. A voracious was grin spread along his lips as he approached the sigel. LuLu felt like she was about to be devoured. The man paused just short of her. After a moment of silent scrutiny, he inquired, “Are you planning to run some errands today, Scarlet?” He motioned to the bag strapped across her shoulder. His question was phrased coyly, but the way his eyes narrowed with suspicion exposed his true intentions. The sigel shuffled the bag behind her. However, even with the bag nearly out of sight, the man was still waiting expectantly for her response. LuLu had been placed on the spot. She calmed her nerves with a single, long exhale. The girl determined that could reason with the man. He was clever, but so was she. LuLu replied frankly, “Samuel, I am ready to go.” The girl then formed a formidable fist with her slim fingers. “I am all healed. It is time.” Her words served to remind the man of the terms to their agreement. She would stay at the mansion until she was all better. After that, she could go back to her home. Samuel straightened. “I can see that.” He bridged the gap between them in an instant. His hand perched against the wall just above her head to block her in. “But, I feel you have some rehabilitation left ahead of you yet.” His words were earnest. “Are you really content with your current state?” He reached out to ghost a hand inches away from where her ribbon met her hips. “I know that I can still give you more, Scarlet. Please, do not leave.” LuLu’s whole body prickled with restless energy. Her instincts were still screaming at her to get far away. And, yet, she had allowed Samuel to get close to her once again. Too close, in fact. It enraged her how easy it had been for him. Reading her was like second nature to the man. “How dare you.” The girl seethed. Her fear ebbed into anger. This man had the gall to continue to intrude on her. He was sorely in need of a wakeup call. “Trust me, I will be fine without you.” Her fists clenched at her sides. “I am perfectly happy with or without legs. Thank you.” Her brief spar with Eloise replayed in her head, and its conclusion hung with her. She was not at a disadvantage. She did not need whatever ‘help’ Samuel was proposing. The rabbit’s face was set in a vicious glower. LuLu drew forward from the wall. She was dead set on stomping through Samuel, if needed. “I am going.” She spat out, “You took too much away. Nothing you can give me will be enough.” She moved to brush past him. “Stop!” Samuel growled out. His grin had disappeared and was replaced by a thin, tense line. “I am in disbelief, Scarlet.” The man’s voice had softened again. His hand rose up and hesitated for just a moment before it grasped her upper arm. He squeezed her almost longingly. LuLu tensed. “I thought you would appreciate everything I am doing.” He sounded genuinely hurt. “But, you do not understand my offer. Not yet, at least.” His hand released her and moved up to grasp her chin. He lifted her face with a knuckle to meet his. “I can complete you.” His blue eyes bore into her. Despite their icy edge, they held a fondness in their depths. A passion had been hiding just under the surface. He could no longer hold back. “Together…” The rest of his words were cut off as he pressed his lips against hers. LuLu’s pupils blew wide in shock. The sensation was cool like menthol. One of Samuel’s arms snuck down to brace against her back. Though Samuel’s movements were full of intention, LuLu did not return his desire. The kiss quickly turned frigid and impersonal. It felt like a shallow reproduction of what she had shared with Sevilin or Franco. They were just going through the movements. Once she realized what was happening, she felt sick. Samuel broke their contact. “Be rational, Scarlet. Do not throw this away for that man.” There was irritation in his throaty voice. The girl tore herself away with an audible hiss. “His name is Franco!” LuLu’s palm struck Samuel’s chest squarely. The man fell back a few steps with a faltering gasp. A hand clasped over his chest where LuLu had struck him as though she had successfully shattered his glass heart with one hit. Samuel’s heavy brow knitted together. “You are blinding yourself with him.” Samuel chuckled. It was a painful, snapping laugh that reverberated through him. Samuel breathed a deep sigh through his nose as he settled himself, “I can still forgive this.” He removed his hand from his chest and repositioned the flower on his lapel. “Rise with me, Scarlet. Forget him.” LuLu frowned deeply. Forgiveness felt like a distant concept at this point. And, this man was hardly qualified to be dishing it out. He should be the one asking for it. However, even if he did, LuLu could not excuse what he had done to Franco. “Why did you do it?” The gears in her brained turned. “Give me closure.” Samuel stated simply, “He did not deserve you.” It was not the answer the girl sought as it was not Samuel’s place to determine who and what she deserved. “He threw you aside and was afraid of your potential.” The man’s usually stoic expression was twisted by his pining. “It may not seem like it right now, but I do not take pleasure in hurting you. I do not want to see you in pain, Scarlet.” Samuel’s fists clenched. “I still remember how broken that man left you that night.” He growled, “Even though I took him away, you are still allowing him hold you back.” LuLu’s jaw trembled. She clenched it tight. “You have done much more to hurt me than Franco.” She was not going to let Samuel distort her feelings. “Franco believed in me before I was Scarlet. He knew I was capable.” She spat back, “You did not deserve to judge him for one mistake.” Her resolve felt steeled. She shot Samuel a glare as she moved toward the door. Samuel’s plan to use Franco against LuLu had backfired. Rather than cultivating a healthy hatred against her former crush, the girl seemed even more enamored now. Samuel was growing frustrated with these games. As much as he hated to use the man as leverage, he could pull something useful out of the fact Franco was still clinging to life like a cockroach. For now, he would put his own feelings aside and get down to business. That was his forte, after all. “I know it is useless telling you what to do and what to feel.” Samuel’s neutral mask had slipped back into place. “So, I will give you a choice, as I always have.” The man carried himself with a professional indifference now. “You may leave tonight of your own will. However, once you go, I can no longer guarantee the safety of that man.” His gaze was callous. “Who knows what could overtake him once he is out of my care.” Fate had left Franco alive for one reason or another, Samuel would make sure his demise was timely and purposeful. He would do whatever it took to make Scarlet his. His words caused the rabbit to pause. Her hand slipped away from the door’s handle. LuLu’s eyes flicked back up to meet him, two amethysts with a sharp gleam. Yet again, he had read her so easily. She had managed to step right into his clutches. She was caught in the wolf's maw. It pissed her off that Samuel already knew what her answer would be. “How can I keep him safe?” SOLO

The CreatorWho: Samuel When: Afternoon Where: Samuel's office Weather: Spring Status: Complete Post-note:Samuel’s sharp jawline and chin was cradled by one of his hands. The man was in a dilemma on how to proceed. He could feel the fine muscles in his face twitch within his loose hold. This was no good, at all. He was already fighting back a scowl as he debated over the options the raevan girl had left him with. There were far too few to allow him comfort. The man was in a place he had never been before - he was on edge. Samuel scrubbed his hand over his face. His brow was wrinkled more deeply than it should be. He reminded himself once again that he needed to remain neutral. It was becoming a frustrating mantra that he never expected he would need to utter. Usually, objectivity was not something requiring reiteration. It was not an option, but a requirement in his line of work. A level head ensured his plans were successful. However, composure was becoming a struggle to maintain every day. Scarlet had been thrust back into his life, and her presence brought a few unexpected changes that took away the status quo. “Why are you looking at me like that?” A pair of warm brown eyes watched him from across the room. He straightened up and leaned back into his office chair. His idle fingers began to thrum in a thoughtful rhythm against the top of his desk. “You can tell me what is on your mind.” The large painting on the wall in front of him did not respond. However, the young woman depicted had Samuel pinned with her pointed gaze. He continued, “It is unfair for you to judge when you were the one who left me.” His voice held an irritated edge, but Scarlet’s hooded eyes remained unblinking. She was painted artistically in a gown structured from clean lines and crisp details. The woman was in her late-twenties around when she was in the peak of her career. Her body was surrounded by a sea of dark red roses, not unlike the dried one pinned to Samuel’s coat. This portrayal had the original Scarlet’s best features, in Samuel’s opinion, such as her soft curls and stern expression. She was a Madonna created by the man’s tastes and solely for his enjoyment. So, why was she turning against him? Her appearance was inexplicably offended. It reminded him of the way the rabbit girl looked at him now. Why was the new Scarlet also turning against him, too? “I will not sit idly by while you make the same mistake.” His lips settled into a thin, concerned line. Samuel had lost his love and spent too many years of his life trying to find her again. Luck and tenacity had brought Scarlet back to him. Of course, he knew that this girl was not the same Scarlet from years ago. But, at the same time, she could be. Samuel saw potential in her. This new Scarlet carried with her the same fierce temperament and flare as her predecessor. They were both two perfect women cast from the same mold. Though, this girl was still soft around the edges. She was still malleable, where the original had not been. Samuel could continue to shape this Scarlet into his perfect vision. At last, she could truly become his. The man produced a red cell phone from a drawer in his desk. He tapped through a few menus before he reached a contact list. LuLu’s contact list, in particular. He had been granted a second chance with Scarlet, and he would do everything in his power to keep her this time. With his care, Samuel was certain that he would unlock this girl’s latent potential. This Scarlet would surpass her mentor. Then, he could replace the scowling painting in his office. He would adorn this space with a new image of her - a new Scarlet he would create - his Scarlet.
