~:Sleep Can Wait:~

Xiu watched silently as Dr. Kyou flipped through Hazeline’s lab report. Occasionally the Doctor would nod or frown when he came across certain points highlighted in the paper. Turning to Lazarus who was at his side, Xiu gave his boyfriend a smile. “Are you checking up on me too?” the Sigel teased although he knew perfectly well that Lazarus had bought tickets to a movie and was just impatient to go.

A small frown could be seen on Lazarus’s forehead as he looked over at the Sigel next to him. “I just want to be here with you.” He smiled softly as he took Xiu’s hand into his, squeezing gently. It seemed like he had something on his mind as his red eyes shifted to look at Kyou. Whatever that was on the report, it seemed like Kyou had already informed Lazarus of it.

The doctor cleared his throat softly before he spoke. “Hazeline told me that you had been sleeping a lot recently.” Gold eyes lifted off the report as they met with Xiu’s sleepy blue ones. “I know that the events in the past months had probably been taking a toll on your body. But you had bounced back fine every time. Do you… know why you’ve been like this?”

Xiu gave Lazarus a puzzled look. Whatever was wrong with the fiery raevan? He seemed distracted and grim. Returning Lazarus’s squeeze, Xiu turned and listened to Dr. Kyou’s question. Midway through though, the Sigel gave a tired yawn. It has only been three hours since he woke up and yet, he was already starting to feel drowsy.

“No, I don’t,” said Xiu with a shake of his head. “And I don’t feel physically sick or anything,” continued the Sigel. “In fact, I feel fine and well...admittedly I do get bored sometimes but apart from that, I feel pretty good,”

“Is there something I should be worried about Doctor? I ...realize sleeping for eighteen hours at a stretch isn’t normal,”

“So you get tired and you sleep, but when you woke up eighteen hours had passed?” Kyou asked, clarifying Xiu’s statement.

Lazarus squeezed Xiu’s hand tighter as Kyou spoke. He’s not speaking, but his tense body language and his slightly sweaty hands tell more than his lack of words. His eyes glance over at Xiu every once in a while to watch his reaction, worried.

“Hmm…” Kyou seemed thoughtful for a moment as he closed the report, settling it on the desk. “This is just a theory, but I think this probably has something to do with you being born from the soul of a Pi Yao.”

Xiu nodded affirmative. “Yes, I went to bed at ten and woke up the next day at four, in the evening,” said Xiu. “Actually Hazeline woke me up because she was worried when I had not left my room,”

Feeling Lazarus’s hand tighten over his, Xiu gave the Valsaros a worried look. Was him feeling sleepy something to be worried about? Or rather something he should be more worried about?

“I am afraid that I am not following you, Doctor,” said Xiu with a frown. “What has my soul got to do with it?”

Despite the seemingly seriousness of the issue, as Lazarus had deemed it to be, Kyou seemed calm and understanding, not displaying any anxiety or worry. Even with the formal writing in the report by Hazeline, he could feel that the Sigel’s guardian is worried about his condition as well. That is why he is here to help Hazeline and Xiu understand what might be going on. One person worrying in this room is more than enough, as his golden eyes glanced at Lazarus for a moment.

“Hmm… before I answer your question though. I would like to ask you some more questions about your sleep.” Kyou laced his fingers together as he spoke, now his body fully facing the Sigel. His eyes are gentle and his expression soft, but there is an air of professionalism about him. “Do you dream during these sleep cycles? And do you remember them when you woke up? I would like to know what they are about if that is the case.”

Xiu appeared thoughtful. “No,” the Sigel finally replied with a shake of his head. “It’s a dreamless sleep all the way. I guess it is something you’d call a deep sleep?”

“Actually, it feels pretty good. As far as sleeping goes. Especially since I often had nightmares after my wings were...gone,” said Xiu as he made a face from the recollection. “When I fall asleep this time though, I feel tranquil and at rest. Almost seems like a bother to wake up sometimes,” the Raevan said before realizing that Lazarus seemed especially unhappy about his last remark.

Kyou looked away for a moment, his eyes staring absently at the report on the table as the gears in his mind moved. It looked like something clicked when he looked up at Xiu again. “This is just my theory, but.. I think the reason for your sleepiness is closely related to the Pi Yao.” He explained. “A Pi Yao is a guardian creature to ward off evil spirits, and when Hazeline released you from that spiritual obligation, I guess… your spirit felt like it had completed its purpose. That or it had lost it’s direction, although I’m leaning more towards the former.”

The doctor leaned back into his chair as he gestured with his hands when he explained. “You’ve read it in books, saw it in movies or even played it in games. When a guardian deity had fulfilled its purpose, sometimes they turn back to stone. To sleep for a decade or to wait for the next person for it to dedicate itself to. I think that is what’s happening to you now.”

This was news to Lazarus though, as Kyou had only told him about the contents of the report. “You mean…” He interjected, his voice coming out a little louder than he expected. “Xiu would fall into a deep sleep that may last years?”

“That’s terrible!” Xiu exclaimed, echoing Lazarus’s thoughts and feeling his heart go cold. He did not want to fall asleep for years. Being dormant like that meant that he would have to pass up on so many things that life had to offer. Turning to Lazarus, Xiu felt his chest tighten. If...if that happened, what would become of their relationship? It was unfair to expect Lazarus to wait for him. That is, provided if he could wake up after this.

An idea surfaced like a beacon of hope. “You mentioned that I would fall asleep if I had no one to dedicate myself to. So...p-problem solved if I have someone I could serve right?”

“Lazarus, I could swear loyalty to you!” said Xiu, talking faster and faster and the words swam before him. “I mean, we are already in a relationship, what is the difference? I would be there with you and stand by you and support you. That’s pretty much the same thing really. We could do this. We coul-,”

“No!” Was Lazarus’s resounding reply. He doesn’t want Xiu to pledge himself to him, he doesn’t need his protection. He wants to protect Xiu! He doesn’t want Xiu to stay by his side out of obligation. That would be just… sad.

On hindsight, he knew Xiu had the right idea. It is a way to keep himself from sleeping, if what Kyou is saying is true anyway. But his instincts just tells him that it is not right.

“I… just want you to dedicate you to yourself. Put yourself first before all others. That is... all I want.” The Valsaros said sincerely.

“Calm down.” Kyou’s voice still sounded calm as he spoke, unlike the two Raevans. “What I say next… might not have any scientific proof. However, I feel like your ‘sleep’ will not be a long one. You can call this a gut feeling or some sort of foresight, but I just know that your sleep won’t last.” Kyou always had an instinct for these things, and usually they’re not wrong. “So… perhaps you should consider laying down and sleep for a long while. Find somewhere quiet, somewhere filled with positive spiritual energy, and lay down to recharge. You’ve been through a lot physically and spiritually in the past few months.”

Xiu fell silent when he was cut off mid-sentence. Listening to Lazarus’s words, he knew that the Valsaros had a point. But really, although the implications were large, wasn’t it more of a formality than anything else? Their relationship would be the same. Because even if he had not pledged himself to Lazarus, he would have done all he could to save the other if Lazarus ever needed it.

When the Doctor next spoke however, the Sigel listened quietly. Dr. Kyou seemed to have some sort of hunch in mind. And at the mention of finding a place to sleep, Xiu’s mind immediately conjured up the image of the temple located in Old China Town just out of Barton. The temple might be small and it might be old but it felt right. Was that why he had the urge to seek one out so soon after he had been discharged from Hazeline’s services? Was it a subconscious act in preparation for this eventuality?

“I have already found a place, Dr. Kyou,” said Xiu as he calmed down. Seeing Dr. Kyou’s composed demeanor had given the Sigel a sense of reassurance. “But I just never knew that I would find myself sleeping in it,”

Taking a deep breath, the Sigel then told the two present where said temple could be found. “But I will have to ask Mr. Tang if it is alright,” said Xiu although he had a hunch that obtaining permission from the old caretaker would not be a problem.

“And Doctor, permission to have Lazarus away from the Lab to spend time with me until sleep comes?” asked Xiu, knowing full well that at the rate his sleep was lengthening, the two of them did not have much time left together. And Xiu wanted to spend every minute of his waking hours with the one he loved.

“That is good news!” Kyou exclaimed when Xiu divulged about the place that he had found. “It seemed like this is fated to happen.”

When he heard of the Sigel’s request though, he didn’t need to think twice before he answered. “Certainly! You don’t need to ask me for permission for that.” He laughed as he looked at Lazarus. “I’m sure even if I said no, he would still sneak out with you.” He added with a hearty chuckle. “So don’t waste your time here anymore. Go, enjoy yourselves together. I heard that you have a movie to catch?”

“Thank you Doctor, and we will!” said Xiu as he got up with Lazarus to leave. Once they were out of the room, the Sigel turned to Lazarus and eyed him worriedly. “You were very quiet Lazarus. Is there...something on your mind?”

Lazarus was still unsure about the whole situation when they exited the room. It is not like he does not trust Kyou’s hunch, but how can he know for sure? What if Xiu doesn’t wake up? What if he really sleeps for a decade, or even two?

He was snapped out of his thoughts when Xiu spoke to him. The Sigel seemed worried. “I was just thinking…” One thing he knew for sure though, is that he does not want Xiu to sleep now. “Maybe instead of going to the movies, we should go to the amusement park by the beach instead? That seemed like more fun!”

Xiu watched Lazarus’s expression change as the Valsaros struggled with the one thing that was on both their minds but somehow they were both afraid to say it lest it jinxed them. The “what if Dr. Kyou is wrong?” question. And the answer to that was a dissatisfying …

They would have to cross that bridge when it happened.

    Aka. They did not know.

Xiu took Lazarus’s warm hand and held it tightly. When the silence was finally broken and Lazarus suggested that they forgo the movie and visited the amusement park instead, the white Sigel appeared surprised. Then he broke into a smile. Compared to the dark movie theater with its comfortable chairs, the amusement park was loud, bright and full of life. Hardly a place a place where one would nod off by mistake. “Yes, let’s do that. Sleep can wait,”

~: Fireworks and...Goodnight:~

For the past week, Lazarus had brought Xiu out everyday. Each day doing something fun and exciting. Such as going to a farmer’s market, going to museums, going to cat and dog cafes to play with the animals, they even went for a hike in the mountains outside of Gaia. Lazarus tried to make their activities fun and engaging, so that Xiu wouldn’t feel sleepy. However, as day and day passed, he slowly realized that he may be trying to avoid the inevitable.

Xiu had been having difficulty waking up each day, and it was getting more and more difficult to try and wake him up each day as well. Hazeline nearly had to slap Xiu awake today, and that was just two hours ago. As of now, the sun is already setting.

Lazarus’s plan today is surprisingly less exciting compared to what he had planned throughout the week. It was just going to be an evening picnic on top of a small hill at a park, overlooking the city of Gambino. There’s a new shopping mall opening and he had heard there would be fireworks, and the Valsaros had used his spare time to look high and low for the perfect spot to watch them. Sure, perhaps watching it with the crowd at the mall may be more exciting, since they are having some sort of carnival down there as well with games and performances. But tonight, Lazarus just want to have a quiet private time with Xiu.

When they had reached the spot, he started to set out the picnic mat and the food he had brought. Fruits, sandwiches and simple desserts, everything he had prepared himself. They were not alone though, as another couple sat a distance away from them, seemingly having the same idea for a romantic night out.

Xiu was nodding in and out of sleep even as he waited while Lazarus set the picnic stuff out. Their time together these last few days had been wonderful, almost utopian as they went from making one fantastic memory to the next. Unfortunately though, each day was marred by the lengthening sleep that loomed at the end of each sunset. Resting on a nearby park bench, Xiu watched as Lazarus diligently set out the food, the plates and other paraphernalia required to make this night the perfect end to ...such a short day.

It was coming, the both of them knew that. And yet they; especially Lazarus, had tried so hard to delay the inevitable. But not today it seemed. Today, Lazarus wasn’t worriedly shaking him every time he dozed off. Instead, the fiery one had went on to secure this spot on Gambino Hill, even taking great pains to prepare each and every dish that appeared from the depths of the large picnic basket like a magic show. Xiu smiled when a plate of smoked salmon sandwiches neatly wrapped in Clingfilm was brought out. “I remember those,” said Xiu fondly. “You made them when we visited the Garden Maze back then,”

A mild wind blew across the grassy slope and Xiu pulled his robes about him. The Sigel’s hair had been neatly tied back to avoid being mussed up by the playful breeze. When Lazarus started pulling out an assortment of cream filled tartlets and a thermos of sweetened hot tea, the Sigel had to stop him. “Surely all that food is meant to feed an army, Lazarus,”

Lazarus smiled as he set the last of the items on the mat. “Well, it’s to feed me.” He chuckled as he sat down cross legged on a corner of the mat, beckoning Xiu to come sit next to him. “I fully rely on these to fuel me now. I can still consume fire but it barely does anything to replenish my energy.”

When Xiu had settled comfortably, he poured the Sigel a cup of hot tea from the thermos. “Here, drink this to keep yourself warm.” It is still the winter after all, and there’s a slight wind picking up. Although they are dressed to keep themselves warm, it is still a pleasant feeling to be drinking something hot. “I stole the tea leaves from Jeremy’s tea collection.” He chuckled. They were white tea leaves, he remembered Xiu liking them.

Xiu accepted the warm tea gratefully. Cupping it in the palm of his hands, the Sigel smiled. The heat from the filled mug felt wonderful against the bite of the December wind. When Lazarus admitted to illegally procuring the tea leaves, Xiu shook his head in mock disapprovement. In truth though, both the Raevans knew that Jeremy would not begrudge them some. He had served the tea several times before and had even told Xiu to help himself to it. Back when Lazarus was himself recovering in the Lab.

That seemed like an age ago. Glancing down at the festivities that surrounded the soon-to-open shopping mall, Xiu took a sip of the brewed beverage. “This is good,” said Xiu with a smile. Having thus given his verdict, the Sigel contented himself with resting beside Lazarus, occasionally stealing a bite from the food Lazarus had prepared. While delicious, Xiu did not need it for nourishment. Not yet at any rate.

Beneath him, his rune glowed bright and steady; courtesy of all the good energy he had been feeding on these last few days when Lazarus brought him out. Contentment was a good feeling to have and at this moment, the Sigel was very content.

Pouring the tea into another cup, he enjoyed it himself as he looked at Xiu holding the cup close to his face. The steam from the hot liquid giving the Sigel a pinkish glow on his cheeks. The Valsaros smiled, albeit a little sadly. When will be the next time he will see Xiu like this again?

“Here.” Lazarus handed a smoked salmon sandwich to Xiu. He had made them into small almost bite sized portions so it will be easier on the Sigel’s stomach. So he could sample more of the other food as well. While he himself chow down on most of the rest of the food. “Kyou says I eat a lot for my size.” He chuckled. “I eat twice the amount that he does, sometimes even more. He thinks it’s because my body heat is higher, I metabolize food faster? That was his theory anyway.”

“Plus you work out a lot more than he does,” said Xiu with a soft laugh as he took the offered sandwich. “I have seen you do weights in the gym and all that running and stuff. Looks like a lot of hard work to me,”

Xiu was about to say more but a large yawn interrupted him. Shaking his head as if to clear away the drowsiness, Xiu took a sip of the cooling tea and seemed to pull himself together.

“The mini tarts looks amazing by the way. I hope you saved Dr. Kyou some,” said Xiu, knowing full well the Doctor’s weakness for sweet food. Picking one off the tray, Xiu offered it to Lazarus. “Say ahh,”

When Lazarus did, the Sigel popped the delicate pastry into Lazarus’s mouth and smiled while Lazarus chewed and swallowed the tartlet.

“I wish this night could last forever,”

Lazarus smiled and accepted the offered tartlet gracefully. He was sure to chew and swallow it first before talking though. As Kyou taught him that speaking with a mouth full is rude. “Oh don’t worry, I set a portion aside from Kyou.” He chuckled, imagining the doctor enjoying it right now. “Five of each actually.” Red eyes glanced down, he made 4 different types. Blueberry cream cheese, strawberry cream, a chocolate one with a raspberry on top, and a mango with vanilla cream, which was what Xiu just fed him. The Sigel still remember to heart what he liked.

“I wish so as well…” He said quietly as he watched the stars in the night sky. The sun had already set by now, and there’s some sort of commotion going on in the mall, as they heard distant cheers. “I think it is starting…” Lazarus took a look at his phone for the time. Five minutes countdown.

“That should satisfy Dr. Kyou’s sweet tooth,” admitted Xiu when Lazarus mentioned the quantity of confectionaries that had been set aside for the Doctor.

Picking up a blueberry tart himself, Xiu took a bite and was delighted by the flavour of the tangy cheese and the sweet blueberries mixed into it. “These are really good,”

The excited murmur of the crowd below signified the start of the countdown and Xiu found himself leaning contentedly against Lazarus’s strong shoulders while the both of them waited for the fireworks to begin. As the countdown neared its appointed hour, the tension in the air grew. Goaded by the MC, bursts of laughter and cheering were heard even at the distance from which the duo sat. The people seemed to be having a really fun time.

But Xiu was satisfied to be a spectator to it all. Sharing a moment with Lazarus like this meant more to the Sigel than any hyped party ever would.

“FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO….OOOOONNNNEEEE!!” screamed the ecstatic crowd as balloons and streamers cascaded down onto the awaiting assemblage. Far above, fireworks were beginning to bloom in the night sky. The crowd “oohed” and “aahed” at the fantastic display of light and sound with hands reaching out as though to touch the falling sparks.

Head drooping slightly with his hand holding Lazarus’s, Xiu’s breathing was even and his expression peaceful. Beneath him, his rune dimmed to a soft yet steady glow. The mug of tea had been thoughtfully set aside to avoid spillage.

They were quiet as they enjoyed the fireworks flashing before their eyes. Lazarus don’t know when, but when he realized it he was already holding Xiu’s hand. He could also feel the Sigel leaning against him.

Lazarus had been trying to avoid it the whole week, trying his best to keep Xiu awake. However, deep down he knew that he was only trying to avoid the inevitable. Xiu needed the rest. And he knew that the reason Xiu tried so hard to stay awake all week, waking up to do all these activities with him, was just trying to ease his mind.

Beautifully fantastic fireworks were sparking right before his eyes, and all he could think about was Xiu. Feeling Xiu resting against his shoulder, he could feel how tired he was, how much he needed this. Gently he leaned his head against the top of Xiu’s head, his hand squeezing Xiu’s. “You can rest now.” He said, his voice just above the volume of the fireworks. “I’ll carry you to that temple you mentioned.” He was finally ready to let Xiu go.

At those words, the Sigel gave a small smile and his grip on Lazarus’s hand tightened for an instant before returning to its resting state. No longer able to keep his eyes open, the Sigel could feel the deep sleep slowly enveloping him like a thick, soft downy comforter. But Xiu was no longer worried. Lazarus would be alright. Xiu could tell it from the Valsaros’s tone. Lazarus was finally ready to let go.

Burying his head comfortably against the crook of Lazarus’s neck, Xiu uttered a soft purr, a sensation felt rather than heard above the distant boom of the fireworks. Bathed in the soft light of the colourful pyrotechnique display, the Sigel finally took the dreamless rest that his body had so badly craved.

Lazarus kept his eyes on the on-going fireworks as Xiu slowly fell into a deep sleep beside him. He could feel Xiu’s body slowly going limp, the gentle vibration of his purr vibrating against his skin. Gently he wrapped an arm around Xiu’s body to keep him from falling down when he completely loses consciousness. It felt like forever as the fireworks blasted into colorful spectacles in the night sky. Xiu didn’t even wait for the fireworks display to finish before falling into slumber, which brought a small smile to the Valsaros’s lips. However, it sooned stopped though, and the distant cheering could be heard again.

The couple not far from them clapped and cheered in excitement as well. Murmurs of chatter and laughter was heard as they begin to pack up to leave, which Lazarus should do as well. Gently setting Xiu down on the mat, he began to pack the leftover food back into the basket.

Once he was done, he let the picnic basket hung on his elbow as he lifted Xiu up with both his arms. Xiu felt… light, despite being a dead weight right now. Perhaps owing to the loss of his wings. The temple is about a good hour and a half walk from the park. Lazarus could take a cab for sure, but he wanted to stay with Xiu in his arms a little longer as he sets off on foot.

~:A Guardian's Contemplation:~

When Lazarus turned up alone on their doorstep that night, Hazeline knew that it had finally happened. Inviting the Valsaros in, the two of them had shared a cup of strong cocoa while contemplating the future. What should they do? And more importantly, how long should they wait?

Lazarus had been adamant about waiting for the Sigel for as long as it took and Hazeline admired him for that. It was a noble sentiment but time has a way of dulling even the strongest of emotions. Hopefully Dr. Kyou’s prediction would be right; that Xiu’s slumber would not span decades. Having someone abruptly step out of your life only to return years later would take a lot of getting used to. Time might have stopped for Xiu but everyone else, it carried on.

A twinge of guilt surfaced; and not for the first time. Hazeline felt responsible for her raevan’s current state of stasis. Had she known that “releasing” her Raevan would lead to this, she might have acted more cautiously.

Then again, would the results have been any different?

The room in which the Sigel now slept used to be a storeroom located away from the main altars of the temple. After Mr. Tang had agreed to house Xiu during his approaching sleep, space had been cleared and a bed had been squeezed in amongst the store of incense and paper offerings. The smell of the sandalwood joss sticks was nostalgic. It reminded her of trips to the temple with her grandmother a long time ago. Hazeline had visited her Raevan again yesterday and by all accounts, Xiu appeared to be resting well. According to the caretaker, Lazarus had been by every single day since Xiu had been brought in. Sometimes he would stay for an hour, oftentimes more when he had time to spare.

Hazeline was glad. Despite her initial misgivings, Lazarus seemed like a dependable and devoted Raevan and Hazeline would not begrudge him Xiu, if and when her Raevan wakes up.

“You have to wake up Xiu, please,” whispered the guardian softly, although at this point in time, Hazeline knew that her words carried no weight. She, just like the rest of them, would just have to hope, wait and see.

With a cane in his hand, Kyou strolled into the temple where Xiu slept. He had encountered Mr Tang in the front area earlier, and was pointed to the direction where the Raevan is laying at rest. Quietly, Kyou observed the temple area around him as he slowly walked pass. Some parts of the temple looked overgrown and unkempt for sure, perhaps owing to the age of the place and the lack of workers to maintain it. However, it was a very peaceful place. There is a certain calmness and an aura of purity to the general area that could uplift one's spirit.

Xiu had chosen well for a place to rest.

The door creaked open when Kyou pushed into the room where Xiu laid. It was his first time visiting, and he was half expecting Xiu to be laying on the ground on some hay, but he was pleasantly surprised that they managed to squeeze in a mattress among the temple supplies around him. How silly of him, of course they would be well prepared and made sure that his rest was comfortable. He stepped into the room and inhaled the smell of joss sticks stored there. Despite the smell, the room felt very clean and pure. And that put a smile to Kyou's lips as he gaze at the sleeping Raevan. No wonder he chose this place.

Two months had almost passed since Xiu had fallen into slumber. The snow had melted away and flowers are already blooming. It is time for the Raevan to awaken from his hibernation, for there is sufficient time for his spirit to recover in here. Plus he is a little sick of seeing Lazarus so gloomy all the time.

Gently settling his walking cane to the floor, Kyou took a seat on the edge of the bed where Xiu laid. The Raevan looked so peaceful. Well, it is time for him to disturb the peace. Reaching over, Kyou gently shook Xiu's shoulder. "Xiu, I command you, it is time to wake up." He spoke softly. "I'm here to claim the favor you owe me."

The Sigel lay sleeping, seemingly unaware of his visitor’s presence. Beneath him, Xiu’s rune glowed with a soft but strong light; indicative of the curative properties of his slumber. Despite having been asleep for the better part of two months now, the Raevan appeared to be well cared for. Even the sheets upon which he rested appeared to be freshly made and there was no signs of settling dust upon his frame.

However, all that changed when the Doctor shook him and reminded him of his pledge. Almost imperceptibly, a sudden stillness descended upon the small room. It was as though the very enclosure itself held its breath in anticipation of the events that would shortly unfold.

A command had been issued and solemn promise must be kept.

Xiu stirred and as he did so the room was suddenly engulfed with a blinding light. Outside, birdsongs became muted and Mr. Tang, the caretaker, allowed himself a small smile.

When the light finally subsided, Xiu stood before the Doctor with a smile on his face.

“And what is your command, Doctor Kyou?”

Xiu waking up to some sort of glowing light? Sure, Kyou half expected some sort of effect like that. But Xiu having grown legs when the light was gone, now that was unexpected. Kyou could only stare at the newly formed Valsaros before his eyes quietly. That was his first time personally witnessing a growth to Valsaros like that. The aura around this temple is definitely something amazing.

Taking the cane in his hand, he slowly got up from the bed. Kyou was happy to find that he and Xiu stood almost at the same height. He too smiled, a smile showing how proud he is to see Xiu grew into a fine Valsaros like that.

Nevertheless, he did have a command to give Xiu. Reaching into his vest pocket, he pulled out a printed flyer and unfolded it for the Raevan. "They are opening a Tokyo Cheese Tart place in a nearby city next week. They have these baked cheese tart with a warm gooey center that I heard is to die for!" Kyou looked excited as he explained. "The queue will be long though, and I need you to go get a dozen of them for me. Come straight back to the Lab when you got them okay?"

Kyou smiled once more as he looked at Xiu like a proud parent, even a little cheeky too. "Told you that you won't sleep for very long." He patted the Valsaros's shoulder as he handed over the flyer.

The Valsaros stood tall and proud as he awaited his creator’s command. While no words were spoken, Xiu saw approval in the Doctor’s eyes and Valsaros in turn was honoured by it. The feel of the worn tiles beneath his newly formed feet felt bizarre but it appeared that they bore his weight readily enough.

Blue eyes observed curiously as the Doctor rummaged through his vest pocket. Xiu wondered what sort of errant was he to be sent on in order to fulfil his vow. At the mention of cheese tarts though, a look of surprise graced the Valsaros’ features.

He had been awoken from slumber for the sole purpose of acquiring cheese tarts?

Xiu tilted his head slightly and wondered if perhaps the Doctor was jesting but no, Dr. Kyou’s features were open and excited. There was no doubting that the request had been well pondered upon and thus made in earnest.

The Valsaros’s puzzlement now turned to amusement. Truly, Dr. Kyou looked as excited as a kid who was promised a trip to the candy store as he held up a slightly crumpled flyer proclaiming the sales of these notorious tarts.

Accepting the “quest”, Xiu took note of the date and time of the shop’s grand opening before tucking the paper away for safekeeping.

“Your wish is my command, Dr. Kyou,” said Xiu with a smile.
