I got my wisdom teeth taken out a little over two weeks ago. All four were impacted, so I waited until my follow-up appointment to even think about picking up my french horn. (The doc said it was okay to play again.)
When I started playing, everything was okay, but...then there was a problem. Whenever I play a higher note, or I increase my air output for a greater volume, air start coming out of my nose as well as my mouth, and an odd hacking nose starts coming from that weird in-between section where your throat end and your nasal passages start.
What is going on? My guess is that the air is hitting the pockets in the gums where my wisdom teeth were cut out and is being redirected up through my nose. Have any of you had this problem? How long will it last? And does anyone know how long it takes these pockets to fully heal? I didn't think it would be a problem, so I didn't ask the doc when I went in for the follow-up.
Thanks for any help; I'm sorry if I wasn't supposed to post here--I couldn't find a similar thread.

I have to get all 4 of mine removed to. But I play the trombone, so does that make a difference?

I would suggest putting aside the higher notes for another week or two. When I hadmy bottom two out, I was able to play my baritone after a week, but anything higher then a T.C. D made the world spin. I'd say gradually build it back up until your gums are completely healed.

It takes a 9 to 12 months for that area of your mouth and passages to heal completely after having your wisdom teeth removed. If if were me, I would make another visit to the doctor, if you haven't already, just to make sure everything is alright, and to see what he/she advises.

[ ] I healed quickly after I got all four of my wisdom teeth removed, but it felt weird picking up trumpet after not playing it for a week or so. I'd advise taking it easy until you feel like you can play to your full ability again. You definitely don't want to push yourself too hard. Getting an air pocket from playing your instrument isn't good at all. [ ]
