I bought thigh-high black and white striped socks for the occasion. My dear friend Viv's boyfriend Tom drove us into Philly in his car by the name of Emma. On the way, we discussed the legitimate standards of defining a zombie, and the best protection from semi-zombies.
Arriving in Philly, we ate at Venuto's, decent wings and mazarella sticks, but I think they had better pizza. Parking and eating, it's now 7:02, doors opened at 7 PM. I was disappointed in the showing of the DirtyBusinessBrigade. Paco the stripping Reaper was there, as well as a great troupe of hoop performers. We were offered cupcakes with various doll parts in the icing, rather dry cake though. Viv usually performs, but was unable to due to the minors accompanying her (me + company). Her plan had been to buy the tiny plastic p***s' for bachelorette parties and hand them out.
Excellent music playing over the loudspeakers as the venue (Fillmore at the TLA) filled. Lil' bit of dancing. The first headliner, Meow Meow, was in the audience and was semi-crowdsurfed on stage, handing my friend Abby, a minor, her cup o' Bourbon and asked for a refill. While she definitely had vocal talent, she was more of an act than a musical performance. Much too much seen of this woman. Still quite good.
Next was the Illuminescent Orchestrii, a Romanian gypsy band based out of Brooklyn, NYC. Two fiddles, bass, a resiphonic guitar, and occasionally a melodica, the music was good, but the individual songs were indistinguishable. At one point, they played a song, and Katie K. (spelling?) came out and "Tribal Fusion" bellydanced, it's not traditional, but still fun to watch. Very good, but their performance lasted much longer than anticipated, and in SRO, it was a little irritating. By this time, I noticed the venue was PACKED, I knew it had sold out, but it was rather warm by this point and I had no water.
Then, Amanda Palmer came on with Elizabeth (something something???) Young, who continued to sing a song with her own guitar accompianment, whose main line of the song was "If we weren't such good friends, I could kill you. What the ******** was I thinking?" She was talented, but I could not hear her very well despite being less than 20 feet away.
Finally, the Dresden Dolls came on after some more music over the loudspeakers, Ben Folds, Avril's "Together" a reference to Amanda's Karoke, and other unrecognizable music. Striking the first few chords, I turned to forementioned Viv, and other friend Matt (occasionally referenced to as 'Saxy') and said, "This is Totallly Pink Floyd." Viv nodded, Saxy looked like a boy who hasn't heard you, but probably agrees. Indeed, it was In the Flesh, on Disc 2 of 'The Wall.' I thought she was going to segueway into her song, so I sang when I could, until they actually played the entire thing, and of course I sang.
Excellent performance the whole way through, Amanda Palmer will not have my baby, but she likes me. She did in fact, "Rock this b***h" and Brian took off his shirt and vaulted a drumstick into the audience nearly taking out the eye of a kid not four feet from me. Whatever? At the end of the performance he threw drumsticks into the crowd. Matt, being a freakin' 6 ft. giant caught one, it's Vic Firth, and he plans to give it to a drummer friend of ours, but that might be a lie.
We met up with several of our other friends during the concert, sent some pictures of Paco to people who didn't want to see it, and nearly collasped of thirst. Very much worth the $25 and $12 for food. I do feel like I took part in something magical as the dirtybusinessbrigade website says you should, and I will continue to feel hopelessly romantic about the music industry.
