My mum runs her own business out of our house, so we're pretty friendly with the UPS guy. Their insanely busy this time of year, so if you see one wish em a Merry Christmas.
I bought my mum's present from Walmart. One of those purses with a customizable fabric insert they put a photo on for you (I chose this cute b&w of my nephew). I work retail and didnt get a chance to pick out her present til the very last minute. I saw the same sort of thing being sold at Brighton (for 150+ per purse..and the photo is permanent I think where as the walmart one you can buy more inserts for $10 each). Anyway; walmart said it wouldnt arrive til the first week of January. UPS bumped it up to next day air service on the house..so its getting here tomorrow.
My faith in the Christmas Spirit has been semi-restored. Im sure its not a case-by-case basis and purely the fact its from Walmart and they're doing it to get out as much as possible in bulk. But still. Mum was sort of bummed that she barely had any presents (because my brothers are jerks.)
So yeah. As someone in retail; those extra smiles and happy holiday wishes /are/ very much appreciated and Im sure delivery peoples such as UPS feel the same.

Indeed. Every year, I send my best friend a gift at Christmas [she lives in Alberta and I live in New Brunswick]. The line-up is always huge at the post office, but I always try to remain kind to the postal workers. It's not their fault that it's the busy seasons, and getting a bitchy attitude isn't fair when they're more likely to be stressed out than we are!
Having said that, even I get a little annoyed when a retail salesperson is snappy with me when I haven't done anything. I never say anything, though. Having been in retail myself, and actually having been fired because of it, I totally understand when rude customers just push you over your limit.

Im still astounded by people who dont seem to see me when Im ringing up their merchandise. All the chit-chat is like they're on auto-pilot and every word out of their mouth to me is purely habit. I think I can clearly and distinctly recall every single customer who gave me even a somewhat genuine smile.
The line at our post office was the same a couple days ago when we went on the 'last day to get it by Christmas without going next day air' - totally swamped and the workers all looked completely tired of the various impatient customers.
Going to get my brother from the airport was insane as well. They lost his baggage and the woman at the counter was horribly rude to my mum who right afterwards said 'You know, I can see where she'd get bitchy from all the complaining customers' (as my mum was politely complaining at the time) 'but biting my head off wasnt called for'
Im just uber jazzed that her present will be here before Christmas. I might just hug the UPS guy..or will that be too weird for him?

Indeed. The ones I hate are the customers who expect you to be perky even if they just stare at you. I had one like that. When I say "hi" and you don't respond, I figure that means you don't want to talk... well, on the way out, she looked at me and in this super snappy voice said, "Can't you talk?" I was so shocked I was just like "... What?"
I wouldn't hug him [xD] but you might offer him something to drink or a Christmas cookie. wink Something to keep his strength up.
