It wasn't often than rains settled over the lands of the Katilenuck. More often than not they were dramatic downpours that sent everyone scurying for a hiding spot, and no one out in the open to talk to. Today, it was different. Though mostly everyone remained in their warm caverns, the rain was only a small fraction of the norm. It trickled down the redenned cliffs, rather than sprinting. No flash-rivers were made, or animals swept away by raging currents. The rain was simply relaxing, but Zara thought it was only the calm before a disaster.

Her mind often thought in these respects. She wasn't pecimistic, or paranoid, but rather sadistic. She hoped it would pick up, so she could watch the waters rage by. In the future it was likely to be her kind and those that sided with her that would put a pull on the current system. They would turn more horrific and bloodthirsty than the original Katilenuck intended.

One day it would get away with them, and the end of the herd would be met. For now they remained a strong army, with enough loyalty and power to make the others fear and stay away from their kind. It was an existance that wasn't encroached upon from either party.

Times would shift when one or the other invaded to far. The downfall of the brindled herd was likely, but if they were to succeed, the lands of Eden would become theirs.

Wet was what it was, and consequently wet was what he was too. Nevertheless, the tri-coloured stallion trotted along in the open in an unhurried manner; he was quite enjoying the tickle of the water against his back and feathered wings and what was more it was quite peaceful out here. The tear-marked Jala came to a steep slippery slop and, smiling softly to himself, slid down it with hardly a wobble. At the bottom he gave himself a shake and looked about. Somewhat to his surprise, he did not find himself alone; some way off stood the blue and white shape of his only sister, and the long-legged Katilenuck gave her a whicker of greeting as he trotted over to her.

“Hullo there,” he said as he neared her with a smile and a nod, “didn’t expect to see you out here; how are you?” he hadn’t seen her yet today; his secret training had taken him away before sunrise and he hadn’t stopped until the rain had come on, hopefully Virgil would have been a good boy and gathered him some decent food otherwise he’d likely be rather hungry later on.

And to be truthful, Zara would rather have had it stay that way. Being raised with three brother's didn't mean she had to like them any. Dahak, she found, was far too happy for his own good. But she kept up the pleasantries anyway, it was the noble thing to do.

"Hello," she answered with a nod of her own, though she couldn't bring herself to force a smile today. "Pontificating," she answered softly, her eyes staring out into the whirlwind of water. (Not that there wasn't enough pelting her coat already).

"And yourself?" she asked looking towards him, skepticism lining her features. "What possess you to be out in this dreadful weather?"

Dahak shrugged his wide wings, ignoring the lacking smile. “Business,” he informed the mare with a nod, “you know how I keep myself busy with this and that.” No, no she didn’t; none of them did yet and he’d have to tell in the end. When he was better at his magics he would tell, when he was worthy of the title Shaman, and the position it would most likely bring him within the herd. There was no sense admitting to half formed talents when, if he bided his time a little, he could show those he knew fully-fledged magic. Still, he felt almost at a standstill right now, as if he was making as much progress as a leaf trapped in an eddy. Perhaps, the blue-eyed stallion pondered, it was time to seek the help of the Illusionist.

She cocked an eyebrow at him. Business? What kind of business could a young stallion such as himself be engaging in? She let the question slide, it would have been rude to pry into his 'life' as it were, though the thought was tempting.

"Don't let mother catch you out here," she said with a yawn. "She'll chase you inside and yell at you for getting a cold." She chuckled lightly, the first sign of a happy emotion she had displayed since she had showed up.

"Or worse yet, father."

Dahak gave a snort of amusement at his sister’s words. “Well you’d better not get caught yourself then,” he advised with an amused nicker, “you’d get no better from them yourself especially with you being their only little girl and everything.” Sometimes he wondered what it would have been like to have been born a girl; he’d probably have made tactician with ease rather than being expected to go soldier or some such. Still, at least his magic would save him from that particular fate once he was decent at it; he’d never had any desire to spend his life as a warrior and thanks to his lanky build he’d probably have been terrible at it if he had tried for such a position.

It seemed to be the only attribute Zara carried after her mother in, the skills of the tactition. She was hearteningly good at moving the objects in a manner that proved useful to the herd as a hole. In fact, she hoped that she'd be sent to work with the huge regiments soon, maybe side by side with her mother and several others. There was always a place to invade and havoc to reek.

It was true, mother and father would have a fit if they caught her out here, nevermind what they'd do to the rest of them. It seemed, despite her age, she'd never escape from their leering eyes. Moving wasn't an option - there was no way for her to survive in the outside world. She was born and bred under sheltered conditions and kind eyes.

While the regions of this world may have been kind to their scouting parties, she doubted that they'd take to well to her single personage. Unless she made up a false story. . .

She broke her thoughts and sighed, knowing she'd run away with herself again. "We probably should get undercliff somewhere, then. All this cold and wet is beginning to make my bones rattle."

Dahak nodded his agreement to Zara's words; though he was still warm from the exertion of trying to do magic he knew he'd soon chill if he didn't get somewhere dryer. "Good idea," he added aloud, turning his blue eyes in search of such a shelter.

"How about over there?" he suggested with a nod to a sheltered overhang that had just caught his attention. It went back far enough to almost be a cave by the looks of it, but not far enough for anyone else to have chosen it as a place to hide from the weather. So far as he was concerned it was a perfect spot but if his sister preferred to look elsewhere it made little difference to him, so long as the place she chose wasn’t full of babbling idiots.

She raised her head and looked at it. Pathetic, to be truthful, it reminded her of a place where two newly found lovers would go to release whatever desires were in their hearts. Nothing too crude, of course, as it was still out in the open - but it was enough to make the youth think they were sheltered.

Something caught in her throat and she frowned, thinking of mother and father. It was really best not to think of either, she concluded. They only got in her way.

"Works well enough," she agreed, plodding her way under the overhang and peering out. The water persisted to drip lightly on her nose, but she took little mind. Her body itself twitched and shivered, and she took in a deep breath to try and regain control of the feeling once more.

It had been so hard to control it when she was little, but now she could almost be completely rid of any of that cold sensation.

"What do you suppose you'll be when you're of the age?" she asked him suddenly, already knowing her choice was made. He had made no effort to fight, and he seemed more like a girl than many of his counterparts. She chuckled at this thought, wondering just what he could do.

Dahak paused outside the shelter of the overhang for a moment to shake off the worst of the water, away from his sister, before joining her and turning to look out at the weather. He hoped Virgil wasn’t being too conscientious about food gathering; a sick slave was the last thing he needed... Or was it? It would be interesting to see if he could learn to cure illness as well as injury; such a talent would probably be of even more use than-

Zara’s words interrupted his train of thought and the tri-coloured stallion chuckled softly. “I’ve got a few ideas,” he told her with a nod, “not a soldier though, I’m not suited to that path in body or in mind. Still, I intend to be of much more use to the herd to be than just another set of obedient hooves.” Once he’d talked to the Illusionist, he had decided that he must now, he would be well on the way to doing that. Perhaps, he considered with a slight smile to his sister, she would have a little more respect for him once he was Shaman. There again, she might renounce him utterly as a freak. Well, that was just a risk he’d have to take, the tall Jala considered, worries about what people might think of him were about as far from the top of his list of concerns as it was possible to get. His ambitions, and the magic in his blood, would not be denied.

A few ideas? Well, if that wasn't something.

"You surprise me, brother," she admitted. "I never though you'd look ahead in the world." Most boy's his age did not. They were involved with women, status, and more women. She was busy crushing those dreams on her path behind her mother's footsteps.

She was to become great at this task, oh yes. Great indeed.

"Ah, but Dahak, sometimes obedience is all anybody every really needs or wants." She winked at him lightly and stretched her front legs, feeling the muscles strain and pull against the stiffness the cold air had given them.

The young stallion chuckled softly; he surprised her, did he? That was somewhat pleasing, to be something more than was expected... but soon he would be far more than was expected and that would be even better. Yes. He wanted to see the look on his sister's and on his brothers' faces when he told them and showed them what he could do. Father and mother too, yes, oh and especially those colts, young stallions now, who had not liked him. It would be fun to show them what the skinny pansy was capable of, and then perhaps to withhold it from them until they groveled or similar. Perhaps. Time would tell.

"Indeed,” the tri-coloured Jala said with a smirk after a moment, once he had considered his sister’s other words, “and one day perhaps I shall be one of those folk who requires only obedience from most of the populous." It would be amusing to have people curry favour with him. As the Advisor's son he had some popularity already, not least with the young mares (whom he mostly ignored for the time being,) but when he had power and influence of his own... Well, it would certainly be interesting.

Never, in her wildest dreams had she thought her brother wish for power.

No, that was not quite the phrase she had looked for. It was more along the lines of, taking power. Zara did not think him capable of such a feat, nor did he have the bottom guts to do it. She, perhaps, she imagined, could easily ride such a path. For one, she had an advantage, being a woman, and for two, she was just good at it. Not to have a swollen head or anything.

However, this was her brother. A low lying, son of a curt advisor who did not seem to have any reason to do so. Granted, he'd been picked on, as much as one can be by fellow stallions, and any Nequus would wish for redemption from those moments. Yet, she'd thought they'd still managed to crush the rebellion from him. Perhaps they weren't quite forceful enough. Perhaps they were both more like father than they realized, and this time had a means to take it.

She dearly loved analyzing things in her head, and a long pause followed before her final answer. "I think, I'm beginning to like you, brother."

She left him with those words, fearing if she stayed even her own controlled bounds would be stepped over. She didn't need to grow his ego, too.

Dahak watched her go, smirk still in place. Well well; Zara liking him? Who’d’ve thought it? It was an oddly gratifying thing, not the liking in itself; the fact that he’d won it was the important thing not really the having of it. Once his sister was out of sight, the tall stallion trotted out into the rain and set off for his cave in search of some well-earned rest. It would be interesting, Dahak decided as he went, to see what she made of him when he did as he had told her he would do. Most interesting indeed. Chuckling softly to himself, the Shaman-to-be trotted on through the rain.
