I hope this is the right forum.
I'm wondering, do you think it's a good idea to import Japanese games to learn and pratice Japanese? Someone said it 'expanded their vocabulary', so I'm guessing you could learn from it, and then of course it'd be good pratice, having to read and understand pure Japanese. Plus it'd be fun... But is having your main sense of native Japanese being from the media a bad idea? And if you think it's a good idea, any games you'd recommended for beginger-intermeditate?

Alot of my friends import Japanese games, but I don't think it's to practice. I think they just like them better. I have a game that uses old Japanese so I don't think it's a good idea, just like learning from anime and manga.

It depends. It can really help your vocabulary, but...
You're going to learn words that are pretty much useless to you. You're gonna wanna know them eventually if you really wanna know the language, but there are many more important things to learn than some of those insults and such.
Make sure not to get into the habit of talking like them. It's more important to be able to speak formally.
If you think you can hold onto those okay, then I'd say go for it. Normally I'd say it's not very good, but I've been having a big problem and haven't really been able to study, but I have been translating things for practice and it is alot of fun, and I've learned from it. I'm finally understanding some of those sentence structures and particles I had many problems with. And yes, it has built my vocabulary. It also has reminded me of some of the basics I'd forgotten. Just don't rely on it too much. 3nodding

I would think learning Japanese through a game would be like a double-edged sword. On the one side, there's no guarantee that the vocab within a game would be very useful to you, and saying words in certain ways can be seen as extremely informal in some cases. On the other side, however, practice is practice, and just being exposed to aspects of the Japanese culture (which is sometimes edited out in the States/Euro versions) can be a great deal of help.
Be careful, though. Imported games won't necessarily work in our consoles. You're gonna need mod chips or special loading disks for most of them.
