I've been looking at all these steampunk computer modifications with a mixture of awe and jealousy. I'm in awe of their beauty, but jealous because I'm not technologically inclined for one, and two, I've never modified anything before. I really wanted to do something with my computer like they did, but I was worried about messing it up. I'm a poor college kid and I can't afford to be without a computer. the laptop I own used to be my mom's as it is.

Then after looking at someone's apple powerbook mod, an idea struck me.

my laptop has a leather-look cover on it.

I decided that I can mess with THAT instead of the actual computer, which prevents me from actually touching the guts of the computer!

I haven't started anything yet, but I've already got a few ideas. I'm really excited. I wanted to share it with you all because I know that I can't be the only one who loves those mods and is scared to mess with their computers.

Any design ideas? I have some of my own, but I can always use more ideas!

Wood paneling. Nothing says "my laptop is FSSKING CLASSY" like a polished wood surface.

I want to do so many mods to my laptop, but the trick is, not messing with it so much that it can't close. D:

Unfortunately, that's expensive if you don't know how to do it yourself, and if you do know how to do it yourself, it requires a lot of equipment and skill. I know. I was discouraged by that when I wanted to mod my computer. ;___;

Which is, of course, why it's so damn classy. Maybe there's some place you can rent work space and practice a bit?

There was one laptop that I just fell in love with...someone made it look like a leatherbound book.
Now it might just be the bibliophile in me, but that is sweeeeeeet. Maybe you could do something like that?

...I want pics! xd

Ever since I started hearing laptops called NOTEBOOKS, I've thought of them as... yeah... notebooks.

It would be AWESOME to see one that looked like it. whee

They have wood paneling stickers, although a bit tacky, if you match up the grains JUSt right (may take a bit of time)
It should look quite nice

I belive i saw a beautieful laptop sticker on one of them sites. Mostly of gears and springs

Im sure if you could find an artist, you could have them design you a sticker and you could have it printed up here
http://www.schtickers.com/

they stick on, until you dont want them anymore then they peal right off.

more of a decal then a sticker

found this one. it be a cute start, especially if you dont want to do too much external hardware work. http://www.schtickers.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=110

you can also buy wood textured adhesive lining from home depot or lowes. once you've applied that, add bits of brass decor to it, such as a brass drawer pull to the back to carry it around by, or painted nylon screwheads to the surface corners, or brass engraving plates to the front.

Honestly, I'd say start on a smaller and less risky project to build up your skills and learn what sorts of techniques you like and dislike. Modify something you can afford to really screw up, and that's smaller and simpler, then see how you feel about doing the laptop.

Here here! Since it really is your first, I'd do something simple. I've been doing my own mods for almost four months, and I still won't touch my laptop. gonk
