I had a hard time reading this book, and in all honesty, I couldn't even finish it. It just wasn't, to me, as good as his other books. Personally, I don't like the "Chosen One" theory in any way and think it's complete bullshit in movies and books alike. There's no way that, out of the whole world containing over six billion people, there is just one person that can save the human race. No, just not possible. And no, they weren't zombies because they weren't dead, and because they have higher level brain functions not just "FOOD!!" and "SURVIVE!!"

This book just didn't seem as good as the others. I think it might have been that suddenly the world changed overnight. That's not possible, and for me, I have to have a plausable storyline to be interested.

I guess I shouldn't be reading Stephen King if I need a plausable storyline in a novel. XP

FatherlandMann
They flew when they were escorting the bus in to their big gathering thing at the end, that was what I read.

Maybe I am mistaken though, memorys tend to alter themeselves...

I don't remember that. I just know there were two Phoners who were fighting over something and they unwittingly hovered like 10 feet in the air before even realizing it and floating back down. Not so much flying as levitation.

Anyway, I loved the book, it was really good. Good length and characters and all that. I had one problem with it, though, and that was the ending. I have nothing against endings where the author has you make up your own mind about what happens, but this was not an appropriate time for one of them. The entire motivation of the main character was to get his son back safe and normal, and not finding out whether he does or not, for me, left the whole thing unresolved.

It wasn't a "Chosen One" story line. No one was chosen. It was a guy trying to save himself and his son, and later his new friends, not the whole human race. He didn't end up doing any of those things, not really. We don't know for a fact that he saved anyone.

Well, I just finished Cell last night. It was enjoyable enough for me to get through, but I feel like it didn't have much depth to it. It just seemed like the premise for the story was something like, "Hey there sure are a lot of cell phones around, wouldn't it suck if they actually did bad things to people?"

There was a bit of "philosophy" I guess about how the core of human nature was murderous, but I don't buy it. It doesn't make sense on a biological level, if you know anything about natural selection.

Also, did the book remind anyone of a hacked-together version of Snow Crash?

Was it published in the same year...in all countries?

Well, I'm not sure in all countries. Maybe Canada and Mexico, at least. But the U.S. got it in 2006 ((I checked the publication date in my own book. :3)) It's possible that the U.K. and other countries got it published later after the necessary editings and language translations.

It wasn't really a "Chosen One" theory from what I picked up.

It was just that he didn't have a cell phone, so he was one of the few people who weren't automatically brainwashed. The fact that he was capable of surviving so far was just a matter of luck and chance, and the only reason he was of any interest to that one zombie in the red sweater (I can't remember if that's right, I'll just call him the ringleader), was because he killed a crap load of those zombies.

And it wasn't just him that got that attention, there were others that killed zombies and would visit that weird little stadium dream and be on the stages. They brought the same attention to themselves as the main guy did.

On a separate note, they're making a movie?! o.O

Personally, I thought Cell could be set aside from his other works. It wasn't really like them in a sense in my opinion. I didn't think it was scary, I thought it was really rather weird. I kept saying the whole time I was reading it, "This book is weird." On that note, I still liked it because Stephen King is certainly a master and I thought it was funny that on the jacket it says he doesn't own a cell phone and that made me laugh.

As for the idea of a movie, it better turn out good. Honestly, I can look at this book and say, it's definitely one that will be challenging to put into film but I would certainly go see.

Going back to the book, I must admit that I was disappointed with the ending. It left so many questions burning in my head. I just want to know whether Clay's idea worked or not. That's really the main thing I care about. The other questions aren't that important.
