Alex raised an eyebrow slowly as Shinji talked. Of course she had no idea what the purpose of the magic field was, that was why she was here, was it not? More surprising than that was that the elven man continued to talk...about himself. He'd been very curt and to the point up until now, and the woman was a little taken aback by his sudden admittance.

She didn't have much time to ponder it as a picture was suddenly in her field of vision, promping her to look at it as any normal person would. However, this was coming from a not normal person and Alex nearly jumped out of her skin at the sight.

Elves. Lots...and lots of elves.

Green eyes roamed swiftly, almost blindly over the photo, but she caught a familiar face out of the corner of her eye, odd enough to make her stop and really look. Wasn't that...? Her face darkened momentarily, brows narrowing in the slightest at the sight of the one individual in the school that she had no love or fondness for. In that brief glance, Alex didn't see Irame, and once again found herself without time to ask as Irame spoke up again.

Silence. She had nothing to say...or rather, too much, and none of it nice. Alex crossed her arms over her stomach, absently drawing her fingers in a small circle over her left hip. The two would have no way of knowing her scar there, but it was a nervous habit she had picked up, perhaps a memory that no matter how bad things seemed, they could always be worse.

That, and it was better than dwelling on her dark thoughts of the one in the picture, who must have some relation to the elven woman...

Shinji glanced at Irame at her mentioning of the photo. He didn't pay much attention to the photo itself, but was rather amused by Alex's reaction. So somehow, the woman was uncomfortable around elves...well, that wasn't much unusual. After all, a lot of the humans didn't even know races like elves existed in the world. Even after the war, some people still believed that it was humans alone who defeated the aliens.

Shinji sighed and decided not to further comment. Instead, he shifted to the wide area that was right in their path. The ground was naturally bare and clean. It was about the size of a baseball field, other than there was not much grass on the ground. Around the field stood several metal pillars, each with a few feet away. The special devices on each pillar buzzed and shone faintly in blue colors. The sky seemed to be clear above the field, however...

"Miss Alex, this is where the magic students practice their skills. We tried to set up this place so there was little obstacles for maximizing the student's output of energy. We also worked with professor Javelin to make these monitors around the field. They are there to absorb any unleashed energy by the students and recycle them into other uses such as electricity and heat. Above the field..." Shinji paused and raised his head, inviting the other two to look at the clear sky above. "...you can't see it, but there is a large magic field barrier that Miss Irame had made. All around the department of magic, there are security devices. If anything went wrong with the magic barrier, the security devices would alert the students so they can be out of danger in no time."

He turned back to the two females and smiled slightly. "Although, I doubt that's going to happen. Miss Irame's magic barrier is exceedingly strong."

Irame tucked the pictured away, but looked up at Alex with confusion. She was used to getting such reactions, but it was not often that people reacted with such strong emotions to everyone. Normally they found the elders charming and wise and the younger cute and funny. And then there was Ran. Then again she couldn’t expect everyone to react the same way. People were people and expecting then all to act the same was silly.

She looked at the area that they were standing in front of. She often stopped by to wonder about how the students would do here, and more than once to practice some of her own, less than completely under control spells. As Shinji spoke she smiled and looked away, but something felt strange. Like she shouldn’t be the only thing standing between the childrens spells and the school. All she needed to do to release the barriers was will it. That worried her…

“Heru Shinji speaks highly of my magic, but I think that he paints too grand a picture.” She said with a smile and the hint of a laugh. “I think that it would be better if Dante had a hand in the barriers as well. He certainly is a better mage than I.”

The human walked ahead of the elves to get a better look at the field...at least, that's what she wanted them to think. Truthfully she didn't want them to see the dark, angry scowl of disdain that rippled over her features at the mention of the one elf who wasn't with them. Alex counted backwards from ten, some of the stress still lingering in her shoulders but completely removed from her face as she turned to look at the two again. She was smiling as if nothing had happened.

"Is it something like a work out for the magical energy?" she asked as if the conversation was of no consequence to her. "Like...like the weightroom I work in, it's for the body. I imagine this is like that, but for..." She waved her hands around, trying to decide just where 'magic' came from. "...mind and the channeling of...stuff."

Now wasn't that eloquent? Alex chuckled a little, giving a shrug of her tense shoulders, now less phased by the elves she stood with in the face of her personal anger. "Your people are very humble," she added after a moment of thought, quietly excluding one pompous elf from her compliment, "apparently we have a lot more to learn from you than just magic."

Alex was a little surprised by her own compliment to the duo, but she kept it to herself. It was easier to concentrate on retaining her anger than to try and grapple with her beliefs.
