Back when the PS3 was first announced, and the information that it would not be region coded was announced with it, I was ecstatic. I thought, obviously if the PS3 could play other regions' PS3 games because it didn't have any region coding, then that should mean that, as it could also play PS2 games, it should be able to play other regions' PS2 games.

Sadly, this proved to not be the case, but the promise to be able to play Japanese and European PS3 games without an add-on was still a good enough reason to buy the console. For a while, I was contented as a gamer since I really couldn't miss what I never had. Then, recently, certain games were announced, and they made me want to go back and play their PS2 counterparts... in Japanese.

So this got me thinking. Despite the fact that I have a 60 GB model PS3, I don't play PS2 games on it; I still have a PS2 which can do that just fine. Since the PS3 games are still non-region coded, could I maybe configure my PS3 to believe that it was a Japanese PS3 so it could play Japanese PS2 games?

Really, I just want to know if there's any way at all that could allow me to play JPN PS2 games without having to resort to buying a Japanese PS2, and I'm pretty sure the PS3 can help me with that.

Any pointers? Tips? Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Well, Sony didn't lie when they said that the PS3 itself was not going to be region coded, however, games themselves can be. Which is the case with the PS2 games, since they were originally coded for the PS2 to be just that, they did not carry through. If the PS3 is anything like the PSP, than I'm sure there is some sort of online software hack that is an option, though I don't know if I would trust it.

Region coding can be tricky. Because software compaies can put it in games. Sony and Microsoft both said the 360 and PS3 will be region free, BUT it's up to the developer if they want to put it in.

Also it should be noted that Blu Rays region coding is different then DVD. For example we are Region 1 and so is Japan.

Also if you put a import game in the PS3 it will see it. It will tell you it's a PS or PS2 game, but when you try to play it, it tells you it can't because of region.

Thanks to the multiple USB ports as well as memory sticks it MIGHT be possible for there to be some kind of way to trick the part of the console that reacts to region protection.

What I'd like to see hackers do is make a emulator for the PS2 for the 60 GB/20 GB PS3s, under linux. My thought is if they can make linux play a PS2 emulator you can have it run off the EE/GS chip in it. Just a thought though.

im actually surprised this hasnt happened yet, but im sure if you give it enough time, there will be a way to install PS2 games onto the PS3, somewhat like what you do with the d/led content, but with those games, you will have to fire up some sort of software first

like for the american PS2's you have MagicSwap 3.0 that would allow you to play imported games on your PS2, you would load the magicswap first, and then you would swap out disks. the only thing that magicswap is, is merely a boot disk, now i could see something like that coming to the PS3 where you would boot up the software first, and then you could play your imported game...honestly just give it time, and if you're really impatient, then just spend 30 bux on getting the MagicSwap instead of buying a japanese PS2

The problem with this is, even with Linux, hackers are pulling their hair out trying to exploit the PS3. It really is a solid system and isn't as easy to hack like the PSP. Just recently, access to the RSX was increased in Linux to make actual polygons, thus 3D. But, knowing Sony, they completely blocked out access to the RSX in firmware 2.10.

It only has been a little over a year though...we need to give hackers some time. They were able to find TIFF exploits in some earlier firmwares...but not enough time to come up with some major breakthroughs for homebrew because of the fast paced updates in firmware.

Hopefully the PS3 will be successfully exploited to the point of running homebrew on it...maybe then we'll be able to play PS1/PS2 games from other regions.

Yes, this is basically what I had figured out and desperately wanted to get around. Since you're suggesting that there's at least a possibility of tricking the PS3 into playing imported PS2 games, I'll try to research the topic more and try to see if anyone has any information that bolsters or denies your suspicions. I really hope there is a way to play region-coded games, but if not...

...I may have to look into this. XD I honestly didn't know of anything that may've been like this that was avaliable. $30 is cheaper than the $100 or so a new PS2 would cost.
But I can be patient for about one more year, so I'll see if either hackers or other means occur, and if not, I'll look into getting this.

Thank you very much, everyone, for your thoughts!

Well, it didn't get very far, but I think there was a TIFF exploit in the firmware 1.90, through that they were able to run PS2 homebrew I believe.

If they were able to do that, region-hacking could be possible...though you'd have to not have updated past 1.90 sweatdrop

Here's a trick they used for firmwares 1.8 through 1.92 without using an exploit...European PS3's only though: http://ps3.qj.net/PlayStation-2-homebrew-running-on-PS3-/pg/49/aid/101899

Here's the trick with the exploit...only 1.90 I think though(experimental too):
