I'm not currently subscribed (damn you, maternity leave!) so I can't double check my sources here, but once when I was in Booty Bay I found a book on the floor that said that Trolls and Elves were related. I think it said the Elves evolved from Trolls or something...but what lore I can find on the website and books say that they came from two different continents and imply that they were always two separate races that hate each other.

Does anyone know what is up with that? Am I missing a bit o' info somewhere?

I'm not entirely sure so...

What I thought was that the two original races were the Trolls and the bug guys from AQ. And they had a big war or something... I'm not really sure, sorry. sad

EDIT: I guess you can check wowwiki.com if want to know more, that's were I

As far as I know, this is how it goes:
Wayback when, there were just elfy things. They were 2 feral races of elven appearance, living pretty frugally, hunting and living off the land and whatnot. Pretty simple people. Then, when they discovered the well of eternity, part of them got smarter, in a way. They learned how to use magic and built huge cities and became a civilization, and called themselves the Kaldorei.
What we now know as the Trolls, which made up the other half of this feral race developed their own kind of magic, mostly stemming off what they call voodoo, which is a different kind of divine magic. The Trolls also developed their own arcane-type magic, which is why they can be mages.
The Trolls and the Kaldorei have always been mortal enemies.
The Kaldorei birthed a lot of new races, most of them having to do with the Well of Eternity. Satyrs, Naga, Blood Elves, and Night Elves, prominently. and, of course, those undead Highborne all over Azshara.

The Ajz'Aqir, essentially the Silithid, were around as long as the feral race I mentioned at the beginning of my post, and the trolls have been fighting them for as long as they remember. Because of the trolls, the Ajz/Aqir split into 2 cities, Azjol-Nerub in Northrend, and Ahn'Qiraj in Silithus.

The Night Elves knew the Well of Eternity was a raw deal, and they didn't want anything further to happen to destroy their race, so they kind of went back to their more naturey-type ways of living off the land and not going crazy with the arcane magic, cuz it attracts demons and s**t.
The Blood Elves were too addicted to care.

So technically, the trolls did evolve from elves, but they arent the elves we know in WoW or Warcraft. They were really primal and crazy and the Night Elves evolved from the aforementioned feral race as well.

Okay, that makes more sense then. Thanks for that answer. ^_^

Although I'm boggled that anyone could remember all those crazy race/tribe names. eek

Thank you, Karnokoto! I love learning more about WoW lore! ^^

Also, the Eastern Kingdoms & Kalimdor (& Northrend was a peice of Kalimdor) were once one continent, before the Well of Eternity went kablooey.

Also, just to clarify on Karnokoto's post: There is no lore that directly states that the Night Elves come from trolls. Trolls did come before the elves, & the ones that came into contact & lived around the Well of Eternity. Lore-wise, the Night Elves outright deny originating from the trolls, while the trolls use it as a way to belittle the elves' accomplishments (mostly kicking the troll's asses). From WoWWiki:

Quote:
Little is known about the night elves' precise origins, for their race was formed so long ago that no hard evidence has surfaced to prove or invalidate this theory. All that is known for certain is that a tribe of nocturnal humanoids came to live on the shores of the first Well of Eternity, and the Well's cosmic energies changed them into the night elves we know today.

Certainly many trolls do believe that the humanoids who developed into the night elf race were trolls. The theory does have some credibility, for there is at least a superficial physical resemblance between trolls and night elves. Furthermore, the troll race dominated much of ancient Kalimdor--the only continent on Azeroth before the Great Sundering--long before the night elves came into power.

Nevertheless, many night elves find this theory preposterous and abhorrent. They are quick to point out that the first night elves began their rise to power by defeating a number of nearby troll tribes. As a consequence, the trolls came to fear and respect the might of their new rivals. The troll theory of night elf ancestry may have been a direct result of this early conflict. The trolls hated the night elves--a sentiment that persists to this day--and may have wished to marginalize the night elf race and its accomplishments. Also, attributing the night elf race with a troll heritage likely helped the trolls come to terms with their own shocking defeat.

Without additional data, there is little point in debating the merits of this controversial theory. No doubt it will remain a matter of contention for years to come.

They come from the Earthern. If you beat the last boss in Uldaman and do that discs quest it tells you all about it.

Trolls were one of the first races to exist--they even existed before the great sundering, when kalimdor was one whole continent. Some troll tribes started hanging around the sunwell, and its energies supposedly transformed them into night elves.

@karno, satyrs are demons, nothing to do with azeroth, naga were formed by a great power existing in the sea that transformed queen azshara and the elves trapped in the well during the sundering into naga. highborne were the elves that continued to use magic even after the sundering, who were exiled from the kaldorei.

the aqir came from the sunwell, and immediately waged war on the trolls, until the kaldorei came around and crushed them both.

trolls (you referred to them as the feral race--those were the trolls) existed before the titans came and crafted the world and the sunwell.

If you think demons have nothing to do with Azeroth I dont know what game you've been playing, but I'm talking about World of Warcraft o_o

Go read the War of the Ancients series (I loved it), one of the elves channeling Sargeras' portal was turned into a satyr as a result of the kind of magic flowing so willingly through him. Xavius, gogo. He turned willing elves into satyrs as well, and was later gifted a dagger from Sargeras that would turn his foes into satyr upon a hit.
Also, yeah, the Naga are still former Kaldorei. Explains why I said the Kaldorei spawned other races biggrin
The Highborne were actually Azshara's favourite servants and whatnot, they were also the upperclass of Kaldorei civilization. The ones that werent killed by the Sundering became known as the Blood Elves.
So no, I got all of that part right...not sure if you were trying to insinuate I was wrong or if you were just giving your own take on the subject, idfk

But you got everything else smack on I think. It was stupid early when I wrote my first post so lol @ me for vagueness

I didn't mean satyrs didn't have anything to do with azeroth, just their evolution as a race (and I was wrong ><). I was half-right about high elves...The night elves did forbid magic and it was the highborne who used it anyway, but they were the upper-class also. And the blood elves actually renamed themselves after the third war, not the sundering. I just checked on wowwiki to be sure of all of that. mrgreen And my bad if I came off as offensive, I was just making corrections.

If you want good lore, play the first three Warcraft games. Plus if you want even BETTER lore, just read the books. They are amazing on the lore. But to answer the question, no I highly doubt any relations of the elves and the trolls. If they are even slightly related, it would be so distant, that you might not even count that as a relation.

Besides, lore that is talked about on Wow can be slightly, if not completely inaccurate. So, like I said, if you want lore, read the books. If you are curious, there are 9 normal books, 1 e-book, and the manga trilogy. But soon, there is a 10th book comng out, and next year, there is even an 11th book coming out. I can't wait for the new books. stressed

Lore-wise, only the Ancients trilogy and the Rise of the Horde are useful, everything else is just fluff.
The e-book is silly, and the manga is horrible.
