Why is it that a lot of people don't take you guitar-playing seriously unless you're slashing to metal? I don't know how apparent this is anywhere else, but it's very common in my school. I once told a teacher I have (who taught me how to play) that I was learning Moonlight Sonata on my guitar, and he chuckled. Then, I mentioned that I knew pieces of Die by the Sword by Slayer, and he started to pay attention. We even have this thing called "Rock Night" at our school, where guitarists, drummers, bassists, etc. come together and play. I decided to go and I ended up by myself, while everyone else was covering Black Sabbath. In addition, everyone keeps telling me that I "have to learn Stairway to Heaven" or some other songs that I've never even heard.

It's really idiotic of them to be so asinine. Has anyone else had this type of problem before?

I know how that is and I must say it surprises me that your teacher chuckled when you told him that you were learning Moonlight Sonata because classical is becoming more popular in metal. It's like Yngwie or MAB. Alot of people have become like that because of Guitar Hero (not that it's bad) just that it shows more roots to popular songs and artists. When I first started taking lessons my teacher demanded that I learn some classical pieces and harder works before I could play easy stuff like Led Zeppelin or Sabbath. He wanted me to understand what I was playing. Alot of new guitarists nowadays just wanna skip all the hard work and learn a few easy songs and that's it. Or try to become an arpeggio god in a week, it doesn't happen like that. Your rock night sounds like fun and I know how it feels to have a more open mind about rock songs, because there are so many different genres of "rock". Don't get me wrong I enjoy covering Sabbath or Zeppelin or Slayer or Metallica...etc, but I also enjoy playing some blues or soft rock or classical pieces too. I also like writing my own stuff. I understand you completely and it is a shame when other musicians aren't open minded and just want to do those popular songs. Guitar playing should be taken seriously whether you're trying to learn some Fall Out Boy (yes I know it's evil and sucks but STILL music) or Pagnini's 5th Caprice or Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. It shouldn't always be about shredding either, shred was once almost dead not too long ago, but it's made a MAJOR comeback. Well that's my opinion as a guitarist of 8 years, I enjoy my playing very much and will always take it seriously. smile

your thinking of rock, not metal.
i don't hear anyone else playing mayhem or impaled nazarene.
anyways yah its been becoming quite popular in the world of guitar to play classical music.

though classical, Chopen,Bach, and metal alike have been my favorite genres since childhood.

i think that everybody should be able to choose what they want to play and learn. if someone says you have to learn something on guitar to be considered good, thats there opinion. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
