whatever you do, make sure you've got a good strong story that won't require much fillers. i personally get bored with mine and jump to the next fresh idea in my head. i've had probably over fifty ideas that were never finished.

Me too ish a young mangaka! I didn't finish my other works.. I reached upto vol2 of the story. It is so hard to draw because at the same time I'm also going to school. My classmates and schoolmates are the ones reading it. 3nodding I'm so glad we have the same interest!!! 4laugh xp

A lot of people want to make mangas, you know, cuz we like drawing, and we have a lot of passions and such. But most people run into dead ends because they don't really know where to go. My advice is to work on the story before the manga. Almost as if you were just writing text version of it. It'll help you work in all the elements you need, avoid awkwardness, and give you a little more choice and freedom after wards.

Being a mangaka takes a lot of patience and time~ And getting things done before deadlines~ so unless you can take that responsibility...y'know... it's good to start earlier too :3 and have a good interesting story plot~

May I ask a question? Why does everyone refer to his/herself as a mangaka instead of a comic artist? Is it some term no one wants to refer to themselves as nowadays? I honestly don't get it =/
Make sure you find a good plot line. Good luck with your work, dear.

Anyways I'm american, too and I dream of publishing my manga book. heart I think it would better fit as an anime, though...

I'm working on getting into a Japanese college that has a major in both "story manga" (actually drawing and creating it) and "manga production" (editing and the other aspects of making and publishing a manga). It's the only 4-year college with these majors but there are hundreds of technical schools in Japan that teach 2-year courses on manga, animation, voice acting, and so on.
I recommend people look into this if it's truly their dream career and they don't want to study comic art ("sequential arts") in their own countries. c:

Make sure you find a good plot line. Good luck with your work, dear. I can only speak for myself, of course, but when I think of "comic artist" I think of Marvel and DC and serious dark storylines with a certain artistic style to them... Stuff I never got into and am not really interested in. On the other hand, when I think of "mangaka" I think of the sorts of manga I read which is mostly Shonen Jump stuff, so it's more relaxed and fun but the stories are still long and enjoyable... and it has a different sort of art style. Of course that's not the only kind of manga and not the only kind of comic... but for me, anything that looks more Shonen Jump I think of as manga and anything that looks more DC/Marvel/whatnot I think of as comics. And these days there are more people drawing in what I would consider the manga-ish style than the other. So... although "comic artist" might be a more accurate title, it would give me the totally wrong impression. sweatdrop *edit* urgh I just realized this thread's really old... sorry for resurrecting it. I'm at work and looking for things to post about to pass the time, and hadn't noticed... redface

It's not too old. ^^
Making manga is hard. Layout makes my head spin, because I get confused. I personally work left-to-right because I'm not Japanese, may never be (despite my best efforts), and honestly it makes me feal kinda wanna-be.
