Some people type in AIM slang sadly. However, I've known people to type like absolute crap all the time, but when it came down to reports and essays, they would write and type like a completely different person, like an intelligent person.

My real life friends sometimes type like that, and they're not Caribbean. Last time I made a comment to one of them [my friends] about their typing skills, they told me the reason they do it is because it's easier. I'd say it takes more effort to remember a thesis' worth and then some of silly abbreviations then to just speak English.
