People in ATLA can FLY, and you are arguing about magma and coal and whatnot? There are no rules in the Avatar universe. Just go with what the creators give you and don't give yourselves brain hemorrhages thinking about the science of it.

Also something to keep in mind with earthbending. As has been pointed out, it's a rather vague category. Just like airbending. Airbenders don't necessarily manipulate the nitrogen or oxygen in the air, they bend air, regardless of contents.

Earthbenders can't necessarily separate the humus (decaying organic matter) and limestone and such, they just bend the earth, regardless of what's in it.

Perhaps, though, the benders need a certain composition in order to be able to manipulate a material... calcium is found in earth, iirc, so could earthbenders take control of bones?

The vagueness of it all makes it all very complex.

The creators probably weren't even thinking that far ahead when they wrote it, so it's really up in the air until the series ends and then it's left to the fanfiction writers and fandoms to figure out whatever they want, so the vagueness was really just procrastination on the part of the writers. xp They're known to do that.

As for taking control of bones . . . very neat concept. And since Earthbenders don't depend on a celestial body for their power, a beasty enough one like Toph could probably do it.

What bothers me more is sandbending. Most sand is actually ground up quartz crystals, though there are other types, like gypsum. We've seen Aang bend crystals in CoD, in the catacombs, so if he can do it, why can't Toph? It's not like Aang's the better earthbender(yet, I'll give him that), because he can't bend metal. The whole desert theasco never should have happened. It I remember correctly, she displayed minimal control over it, but still. Pretty pathetic. (which Toph is not)

But doing pointless stuff isn't just what makes us human, it's what makes us FANS. Arguing over menial things is what humans do. No one said it was smart, just fun. Consider it practice for when we're big-time scientists or whatever.

So here's a thought; since spring tides occur on both the full moon and the new moon, why isn't waterbending stronger on the new moon?

For that matter, would firebending be decresed during times of high sunspot activity?

But here's the crowning one: What is the past tense of Firebending? dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun . . . .

She can manipulate sand. She does so quite well. In her debut episode, she manipulates the dust cloud surrounding the arena as she faces off with the final opponents. In The Library, she clearly compresses the sand around her feet into rock.

She can use it. She just can't see through it, so to speak. It's particulate matter, with enough airspace between to prevent her from getting a clear picture. And without being able to see, she really had no defense against the ambush.

Regarding the moon and waterbending... it honestly doesn't make too much sense. The moon is, on average, about the same distance from the earth all the time, is it not? Full moon or new moon, the moon is still there, it's just a matter of what angle it's being seen at.

Holy science, Batman!

Uh, yeah, I'm just gonna sum up my overall opinion and say that it's a kid's show. -_-;

But I'd like to add that Zutara shippers simply ADORE the fact that the moon (water) reflects the sun (fire), and that waterbending is at it's strongest when the moon is reflecting a lot of the sun.

Or, I dunno, I would if I was Zutarian. I'm one of those shippers who takes every tiny minuscule inconsequential detail I can and RAPE it for all that it's worth.

Morruin_Neko: Firebended? Firebent? Like, "Zuko firebended a tree." 'Firebent' sounds weird.

*Bows to rpgamer987's earthbending logic*

The problem with earthbending is its so straightforward its confuzzling.

Spring and neap tides have nothing to do with how close the moon is to the earth, even though I believe it does travel in an elipsis(someone besides me check it), they have to do with where the moon is in relation to the sun.

When the earth, moon, and sun are all in a line, as on the full and new moons, the sun adds its force to the tide making it rise higher. When the moon is at a right angle to the sun, as in neap tides during half-moons, the sun counteracts the gravitational pull of the moon somewhat.

That is where spring and neap tides come from. A Zutarian could take that and foam over it as much as they want.

I betting there should be a "not" somewhere there...

I think they all would be some other form of speech... "...used firebending on the tree," or something. Not past tense, past participle or something, maybe...

Hah. I totally agree. This isn't even a fun aspect of said kids' show to argue. I mean, normally I jump headfirst into these kind of arguments, but this is just lame.

Pff. I'm a hardcore Zutarian, and even I find those stupid arguments relating the moon and the sun with Katara and Zuko rather redundant and dull. Hah. Raping facts for all they're worth is fun, but elemental arguments just... fail.

- Maybe "used firebending on ____"? Like, "Zuko used his firebending on a tree."

Look it up in an A:TLA magazine. I'm sure they've got some past tense stuff somewhere.

Well, pokemon can't be shut in air tight balls with no food or comfort for years, and still live, but it's still done.

I don't think each bending is literally 'fire' or 'water' or whatever else. Some of it they just added in for fun and they kind of sort of have to do with the different types of bending. Anime is just like that a lot. It doesn't make sense. I mean, none of it really makes too much sense but that's what makes it so good.
