C'mon, you gots ta give him his props, hes second in yards in the NFL and hes first in recieving for a running back in the NFl. I think he is the best back at the most and in the top five at the least.

Discuss, who do you think is the best running back, and don't say Adrian Peterson becuase hes still a rookie, the back has to be two years into the league to fully critique him.

...Running Backs have altered throughout the years. Blocking, power, pure, speed, all around, and more. Here are my current picks...

Best all-around running back in the NFL is, hands down, Brian Westbrook. He has always been in or around the top in total yards from scrimmage. He almost single-handedly carries the Eagles, day in and day out. Westbrook always performs, and never has a bad day, or season. He is injured often, yet always seems to run and catch the ball like nobody in the NFL. He is deadly on screen passes Westbrook is about 60-40 in his rushing to catching yards, and about 80-20 in rushing TDs to receiving TDs. What more can you ask, of the most complete back?

Best power running back is Brandon Jacobs. A huge guy built larger than a linebacker, but quicker than a safety is always able to pound it in. He averages about 5.5 yards per carry, and is, believe it or not, very difficult to bring down in the open field, or with two or less guys. He needs to get gang tackled. Injury has limited his season though.

Best speed running back is Adrian Peterson. You can argue that he's the best rushing running back, but he still needs a season or two to prove that. He too was limited by injury, and still shares carries with Chester Taylor. He is the leading NFL rusher still, and many of those yards came from long runs, out of the red zone. He is a speedster with quickness, agility, good view of the field, acceleration, and tremendous cuts. A definite Hall of Famer if he keeps this up.

Most valuable running back is Tomlinson. He is the heart of the San Diego Chargers, and performs every season. He is third in the NFL in rushing touchdowns, in only his 7th season. This definite Hall of Famer had a stellar 2006 season, with numbers that nobody had seen before. This touchdown machine has the best vision of the football field of anyone of the last decade, and is always at the top of his game.

Other great running backs who were not mentioned are Steven Jackson, Willis McGahee, Joseph Addai, Ronnie Brown, Edgerrin James, Willie Parker, Marion Barber III, Fred Taylor, Jamal Lewis, Frank Gore, Shaun Alexander (*Madden curse* *cough*), Reggie Bush, and Larry Johnson.

...others are still great players, but are just below this list of current greatness.

Before the season started, if I didn't get LT first round I was picking westbrook. the fact that he is a threat on the ground and air is huge, all the eagles need now is a stable quarterback situation.

Luckily, even though I picked 10th out of 10...

Tomlinson, Steven Jackson, and Greg Jennings started out pretty bad in the beginning of the season, and I was able to trade for all of them surprised

I like Westbrook but he is all the Eagles really have, but I feel the same way with the Charges so it could be either. Westbrook is just everywhere so he has to win in a most useful contest with more "powerful" goes to LT.

I think The Maimi back Brown or whatever was going to compete with AP for Rookie of the year until he was injured.

Yea, I agree with you in the rookie comparison, yet AP seems to be the one of the two who could probably go on to a Hall Of Fame career.

...but Tomlinson and Westbrook aren't all that the Chargers and Eagles, respectively, have.

The Eagles have a pretty good linebacker core, a very good secondary, McNabb, Kevin Curtis, and a good back up running back in Buckhalter. AJ Feeley is decent as well.

The Chargers have the best tight end in the league in Antonio Gates, the best fullback in the league in Lorenzo Neal, Rivers should start to be clicking soon, Vincent Jackson, Michael Turner, and Chris Chambers. Merriman, Cromartie, and S. Phillips leads their defense. Also, don't forget their great special teams unit.

Gates is only as good as Rivers makes him. Well better, but the message is clear. I want to see Rivers make the Chemistry before I say he is good. However I did forget about Gates.

Mcnabb is injury prone, and Kurtis I don't think is that good. Feeley is interception prone. The Back up is good, but he is scarcly used. We've seen the Eagles without Westbrook and it is not pretty.

Defensively I will give it too you the charges have some great talent, but I don't think they could win without LT

true.

Rivers is declining to the level I thought he'd be, the Chargers depend solely on Tomlinson, and the Eagles do have a pretty fierce defense and a good backup running back in Buckhalter.

-.- when i looked at the topic i just thought....no...just no....McGee the RB for the Ravens is much better because if you saw the game the Pats@Ravens, you would see his full potential

Why would you ever judge a running back by what he did in one game? Yes, McGahee is in the top 10 (like around 5-7) RB in the league right now...His potential is extremely high, but he lacks consistency. Tomlinson and Westbrook have emerged as running backs who are consistent game aver game after game. Yes, McGahee played an excellent game, last week against the Patriots, but he has been inconsistent over the years.

Maybe you can argue he has a bit more potential running the football than Westbrook, but can you really rank him over Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson for this season...?

Very complete and Westbrook-like. Yet, he has huge games and bad games. Westbrook is just about always consistent.
