It was around mid-day as Shane and the girl he had named Erika walked back from the furniture store. They were on their way back to the child drop off center in the shopping complex to pick up Pyren, who, Shane found, was a constant distraction to Erika with his bright colors. If she was going to be helping Shane pick out any things for her room, he couldn't have her constantly being fixated on Pyren's electric colors. The problem was that there didn't seem to be anybody else at the center that day, so Pyren was very reluctant to be left alone with the random mall day care people. To make Pyren feel more comfortable though, he brought along the set of walkie talkies that he had bought for him, so that he wouldn't be so bored, and could keep in contact with them, without being a distraction to Erika.
On their way back though, Shane had found that there was a faster way in the complex to get back to the daycare center, which they had started to walk towards, when suddenly Erika stopped dead in her tracks and took off towards a candy store that was across the way. Shane didn't have a second to react, and only noticed at the last minute as she disappeared into the store. Bolting in after her, he tried to figure out what had made her tear off into that store in particular, when he realized that the whole place was decorated with brightly colored Christmas lights, and that, save for the chocolate, all of the candy itself was almost blindingly colorful.
Pulling out the walkie talkie, Shane spoke with a sigh into it.
"Sorry Pyren, we're going to be a little while longer...it looks like we're picking up some candy."
On the other end, a static voice came over that said
"Huh? Candy? I want to come too!"
"I know, sorry bud. I'll pick you up some lemon and orange stuff okay?"
"Okay...but hurry quick."
"I will, see you soon." he said while putting the walkie talkie in his coat, and walking over to Erika.
"Alright then missy, what is it that's caught your eye this time?" he said with a laugh, knowing well that she couldn't really hear what he was saying.

Bernadine sighed. She and her new ward Miles had been in this brightly colored candy store for what seemed like hours now. They stood near the back, or rather Bernadine stood and Miles sat at her feet, a variety of smooshed and smashed candies in his lap and on the floor around him. He wasn't eating any of it like a normal kid might, instead, he ran his hands across sheets of candy buttons and rolled gumdrops between his fingers like a gambling addict with his dice. Mrs. Gorey kept a close watch on where all the molested treats ended up; she was still going to pay for the child's mess, even if he never ate a single piece.
It certainly wasn't the sound of Erika's footfalls that caused the wide-eyed boy to look up, no, it was more the feel. Miles' small body tensed at the reverberations coming from the girl's anxious steps, and he fisted his hand, wincing slightly as hundreds of gumdrop sugar crystals dug into his palm.
Pink. This girl had pink hair. But she was so far away! He held out his squished gumdrop, hoping it might bait her into coming closer so he could find out what pink hair felt like.

Shane, realizing that there really wasn't much that was sweet that Erika wanted in the shop, or at least that she knew of, decided to look about the store to see if there was anything that he might want to pick up for later.
His eyes roamed about momentarily when he caught the sight of a horrible mess down at the far end of the shop. A kid was sitting on the floor, surrounded by a mess of wasted candy and seemed to be holding out something in their direction. Shane felt sorry for the store proprietor who had to clean that kid's mess up and wondered why it was that the woman that was standing there didn't seem to be trying to stop him from wreaking more havoc. Then again, there was a possibility that the kid had a bad temper. In either case, Shane decided it was probably best to mind his own.
He began to walk down towards the gummy section of the store anyways, as he saw that there was a bin of gummy orange, limes, lemons and...well, red orange-shaped candies that Shane never understood what the candy people were thinking when they made them. He knew though that if it was citrus in nature somehow, Pyren would like it, regardless of whether or not it actually had any acidic properties to it. He moved slowly towards the bin though, making sure that Erika was within his line of sight, and that she knew exactly where it was he was going.

Miles' hand dropped to his lap, his attempt at attracting attention from afar an apparent failure. He pushed himself to his feet and approached Erika the old fashioned way, stopping a few feet away from her and reaching out for her hair without touching it.
Mrs. Gorey slowly kneeled on the ground and began picking up the ruined candies, dropping them into a bag she held for that purpose. Every so often she would look up to see what Miles was up to, but it was clear her parenting style was decidedly more Children Learn From Their Mistakes.

Erika was suddenly interrupted in her gazing by an interloper within her personal space. It took her a while to think about if she'd want to see what it was this boy wanted so close to her, or if she should continue staring at the pretty light. It was almost a no contest that the pretty lights won out, but she didn't move out of reach of the boy. She didn't mind having people that close to her, especially if they seemed to be paying attention to her.
Shane had a sinking feeling that something was going to happen with Erika and the boy, so he began to focus his attention more onto what it was that they were doing, and less on the candies that he was absentmindedly filling into a plastic bag. He only changed his gaze when he realized that the bag itself was suddenly full, so he tied it up and continued to watch.

Receiving no indication that the girl cared whether or not he touched her, Miles dropped his hand the rest of the way to her head, sliding his fingers lightly down the strands.
"Pink." Miles had been born with the power of coherent speech, despite the fact that he could hardly hear it in his own head, but his voice was very low and barely used. Pink hair felt a lot like pink paper, or a bright, shinier version of the pig he had met at the zoo. Interesting, if predictable.
Bernadine made her way to the counter, to pay for her bag of grotesque inedibles. She might have called out for Miles then, since he probably shouldn't be petting strangers, but it wasn't like he could hear her. She chose to hold her intervention until after she had paid for the candy.

The second the boy with the blue hair touched hers, she jumped a little, suddenly realizing how close this boy was to her. Now her attention wavered from the shiny light, to the bright blue hair on the boy. This boy was now much more interesting than the light because the boy was now paying attention to her. Still keeping the light in her peripheral vision, she did nothing but look at the boy and let him play with her hair. He was rather excited looking with shimmering yellow eyes which were much more interesting than his hair, so she instead stared at those unflinchingly smiling brightly. This detour into the candy shop was turning out to be a great idea.
If anybody had been paying attention, they would've seen the priceless mixed expression of shock and confusion on Shane's face. Here was some random boy who decided to place his hand in his charge's hair, and suddenly she began to stare at him like he was a work of art instead of a total weirdo. Shane was starting to think that they were possibly both weirdo's...or both were possibly from the same place. With an intuitive hunch, Shane made his way over towards the woman who he'd spotted with the boy before.
"E-excuse me miss but," he started "Your boy there, he's not a, and I'm sorry if this sounds totally odd, but is-he-a-Sylph?" Shane rushed the last bit just to make what it was he was saying seem more normal than it really was, so that he could possibly talk his way out of a possibly awkward situation and say that he asked something else instead.
