Nicholas Courtney is our dear old Brig. smile

Certianly is, god bless him. And still playing the role. He reads the 'companion chronicles' audio-lite out this month; the very appropriatelly named Old Soldiers.

And they say there's no such thing as a job for life.

Talking of undue hatred already hate is felt towards Donna as a companion and she hasnt even been seen yet (in comanion role) damn people give her a chance!

I love it when people say that she can't possibly be suitable for Doctor Who since everyone thinks of her as a comedy actor.

Bless 'em. They've obviously never heard of Jon Pertwee. Back in 1970 he'd have been mostly known for The Navy Lark and being in a couple of Carry On films. Back when he became the Doctor, the public would have thought of him in just the same way they think of Tate now.

I'm no fan of Carry On films or The Navy Lark (I've tried. I've really tried), but I'm happy to admit the Third Doctor worked out okay.

I'm no fan of the Catherine Tate Show, but I'm happy to admit that Donna just might work out okay too.

Standard operating procedure for any internet fandom is to spend most of its time talking about how much it hates the show/novels/comics/films it's devoted to.

And standard operating procedure for Doctor Who fandom is to hate whatever's current. The Russ-loathing right now is nothing compared to the JNT-loathing there was out there in 80's fandom. And you should read the contempory fan-pres reviews of things like The Deadly Assassin that're considered untouchable classic cornerstones of Doctor Who right now - they were despised at the time.

I don't think there's too much bashing on this guild though - and what there is just serves to balance out the gushing enthusiasm of the likes of me. I've been a Doctor Who fan since 1980 and looking back I think the reason I've stuck with it through thick and thin is just that I must have somehow known the series had the potential to be as good as it is right now. Russell's Doctor Who is a promise fulfilled.

Why have you highlighted despised and right now?

As I recall, some folks were pretty appalled when Sylvester McCoy became the Doctor--a guy who banged nails into his head and stuck ferrets down his trousers in a road show (his act can be seen in one of the videos of The Secret Policemen's Ball--which one, Richard? smile
I have it somewhere but it's gone & hidden itself right now. I remember one bizarre bit with Syl as an escape artist chained to a chair he has to escape before a toy train with a fork on its cowcatcher makes its way around a track & falls fork-first in his lap. He doesn't, of course, though watching his frantic flailing around is hilarious. )
Used to be at cons Syl would do his comedy acts for the cabaret. I got to see his rather infamous rubber band skit at a con in Indianapolis in '93 with Craig Charles as his hapless assistant. It was just insane. rofl

He has some pretty strange acts. On the show he had to make his moves comedic because the first season was meant for someone else. He had to do something to make up for that. That was why when the second season came the Doctor's darker side was starting to come out.

I feel that Donna would be the perfect person for the Doctor right now. Though one could make a drinking game on to drink every time she slaps him.

I think I'm a Doctor Who grognard...

[From wikipedia]

Grognard (Fr. "grumbler" from Fr. "grogner" 1. snarl 2. grunt 3. growl 4. grumble [râler] 5. gripe [râler] and Fr. "grognon" 1. grouch 2. curmudgeon) may mean:

Napoleon Bonaparte's name for old veteran soldiers; specifically the Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard (Grenadiers à Pied de la Garde Impériale). They were the soldiers who were old enough to know what was going on, but junior enough in rank not to be able to affect it, and constantly complained about it.

Inside the computer game development industry, the term grognard is used to name fans who will buy every game released in a certain genre of game (RTS, RPG, etc.). These dedicated game players are often viewed as a blessing and a curse, as they will ensure a certain minimum level in sales, but they will also be the most critical of any mistakes or bugs in the game.

For the record, I'm probably also a D&D and Transformers grognard as well. razz

I like this term! It explains comics fandom very well, as that seems to be made up of about 95% grognards and 5% new blood.

At it's root though, I'm not sure the analogy carries through.

A jaded Nineteeth Century French Soldier who's not loving it is still stuck pretty much as a Nineteeth Century French Soldier. A jaded gamer or a jaded follower of a particular series has a lot of options out there for other, new, different hobbies they could persue which might make them happier than complaining.

RTD is in my opinion a brilliant writer! mrgreen In my opinion, the only bad episode was Evolution of the Daleks because the thought of the Daleks becoming human was just wrong. sad But then again I'm American...
