I'm pretty amazed at how far and eloquently they ran with it. Just goes to show, you don't have to know what you're talking about to talk about it. That, and, layra-chan, was that really from a paper? and it if was, I'm pretty amazed they read it.
Conan O'Brien does that every once in a while; they take something full of jargon and pretend to have a conversation about it, and it eventually ends up insulting Max. Usually it's not so arcane, but it's usually still stuff that nobody without years of in-depth knowledge of the subject (like local baseball teams, imports from various places, specific historical incidents) would be able to understand.
Having tried such a thing myself, I can tell you that it is ridiculously hard to do with a straight face. The trick is to not actually read the paper itself, but rather to pull lines from it somewhat mechanically, and then turn those individual lines into a "conversation".
But yeah, apparently it's from one of Gerald Gabrielse' papers on single-electron dynamics. He loves that electron so much, it's kinda funny.
