so i've been playing guitar for 4 years, mostly electric. we do have an acoustic, but it's my dad's, and i'd really like to have one of my own. i've been shopping around on musician's friend and guitar center's website, but i really don't know what the good acoustic brands are. anybody have any suggestions?

Try taylor, ovation, and Dean's acoustic models are pretty nice.

Ovations are ********. Can't ever go wrong with an Ovation. I've never had any issues with mine.

Ovations, Taylors and Martins are great, but for at least half their models, you might as well hand your wallet to the guy at the music shop. The acoustic I have, the Schecter Diamond Acoustic is relatively cheap ($299 for my model, for the Diamond Elite it's $349), and play and sound very nice.

I can't believe there's no love for Larrivee!! Their entry models usually sound better than most of the upper end taylors and martins! Seriously, if you get a chance, check them out! I bought a beautiful L body guitar with Rosewood back and sides and I've never been happier with my acoustic sound. and it's purdy too :

Takamine make great acoustic/electric guitars. I've had pretty good luck with their G series.
Martins have a sweet sound (usually).
The only Yamaha guitar I ever looked at was a nice sounding instrument (I was so surprised at myself: I generally wouldn't touch Yamaha instruments with a ten foot pole). I even considered buying it. It was a FG750S.
I once totally fell in love with a Luna Fauna Dragon Acoustic-Electric. I wanted to buy it so much, but my mom said it sounded hideous and that was the end of that.
Taylors are OK. I've never really had much experience with Ovations.

Well if you want top of the line, Taylors, Alvarez, Larriviee, Hirada or something like that.
I would recommend a Seagull however. They are absolutely AMAZING, for the low price. I own 2 and I am planning for a third.

I have a Martin I got for $800 and got hidden pickup job in for $150. It's a very lovely guitar and has excellent sound. I wouldn't change anything about it. I hear that Gibsons make good acoustics too, but I've never played one myself.
