I am currently torn about an audition I have coming up ALL because of a silly superstition I have been told of.

For years I have always been told to never sing a song from the show you are auditioning from. I've been told that a.) it's bad luck, basically jinks'ing yourself and b.) the directors may view it as you being cocky about getting a part in the show.

I have never sung a song from the show I am auditioning for but I now have and audition coming up where the best song I have prepared for the part is a song from the show. It shows off my range, my acting, the works, but I keep thinking that if I do it I'm gonna just curse myself.

What should I do and does anyone else have this feeling about auditions? Or do I sound like a total moron to think such a thing?

I've never heard of it being a superstition, but I don't think it's the best idea. I wouldn't say it would be cocky to do it, but it shows the casting agent/director/whoever you are auditioning for what your opinion of that character is, and if it doesn't fit what they think it is, it will be harder for them to want to use you. The more specific you are with that character, the more they will think that it will be hard to let you start fresh if they cast you. That's why they generally don't have auditioners read from their play/musical until callbacks. If they ask you to cold-read/sing and it's that song, then you are really REALLY lucky.

Also, there are sometimes a good number of people who try to sing songs from the show you are auditioning for/a really really popular song, and it's easy to judge them against other people who sing the same song, etc.

I heard your version of Little Mermaid (I voted for you 3nodding ) and because you are pretty good, I'm sure there are other songs that you could sing very well. It's just smart to have multiple songs to choose from to begin with.

Then again, this is just my opinion/what I've seen at auditions. What show is it for, if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you (About the vote ^.^)

It's "Wonderful Town" and I have 100 Easy Ways perpared BUT now HERE is the really dilema. My voice teacher, who has trained me on the character asspects of the song, is the vocal director for the show. I know that the character he is looking for in vocal performance is the one I have been working with. He's been a nazi about it. So now it adds the factor that I basically fell bad about singing it just I feel like I've gotten inside help and it would kind of be unfair to the rest of the people auditioning.

eek That makes you super lucky. I would just say you should go talk to him (since he is your voice teacher) and ask what song you should sing for his audition. That might sound like it would be more inside help, but at least you would know what song to sing (if he/she gives you an honest answer).

Otherwise, it you think it's the best song to audition with (range wise, etc) AND he coached you EXACTLY how they want it to sound/acted out, totally use it I guess.

As for feeling bad about it...DON'T! xd That's show business for you, right? There is never going to be a situation at any audition where no one has any upperhand above anyone else. Especially in an academic setting (middle/high school, college, etc) directors/teachers/coaches will pick plays/musicals that will show off particular people to give them chances. Maybe that's why they are doing this musical? It happens here at college all the time. I'm pretty sure I got into the last show I was in because I'm good friends with the director, but I didn't get any of the parts I wanted because I'm not graduating this spring/other people needed a really good chance/they're really good friends too. It was probably pre-cast. crying

Plus, if he is a Nazi about everything and wants it to be particular, he won't cast you because he knows you, but because he knows you can do it (and well I'm assuming). If he thinks someone else can do it, he'll cast them.

I've never heard of that show. I kind of want to hear/see it now. Lemme know how the audition goes!!! 3nodding

For the record... using the song REALLY worked to my advantage. I got the part. It's a funny song and the character is highly sarcastic so in doing the song, it showed I can handle the comedy of it.
