I assure you, you won't get coconut all over or make it inedible. Coconut milk won't cause stains, and it's usually pretty easy to get out anyway.

Okay, apparently coconuts are 47 times harder than steel. I finally got it open by hacking at it with a machete, and when it did, I got to partake of the random liquid within.
There wasn't much of it, and it was rather nasty. The foody part of it is allright though.
In general, not nearly as good as you made it sound. But maybe I just got a bad one or something.

If there wasn't much coconut milk, then the nut was probably old-ish. I actually don't like the milk either, but some people do.
But I love coconut meat.
Also, I am amused by the idea that coconuts are mammals.

I don't like coconuts at all. They tast all bland and not good....
especially the shredded kinds.

I can imagine that the foodish part of a not so old one might be good. I think mine was rather decrepit though.
Yeah, the "milk" tasted like sweaty snot to me. Though I think it is actually technically called "coconut water".

I've always been rather good at writing. Of course, I'll put that to the test when I go to college in the fall. And not just school papers either, I'm also an aspiring novelist. 3nodding

Coconut = Disgusting.
The only time I will even go near a coconut is when it's time to smash it with a hammer. twisted
(imagining myself with Yzma's evil voice - from Emperor's New Groove)
I cannot believe that there is an entire website devoted to the method of opening a coconut. eek
