Första gången man startar spelet skapas en enorm värld med hjältar, legender, städer, platser och bakgrundshistorer om dessa slumpmässigt. Det enda som är förbestämt är vilka monster som finns i världen och vilka saker som finns tillgängliga.
Efter att världen har skapats kan man välja mellan 4 olika speltyper:
Dwarf Fortress: RTS, man börjar med ett antal dvärgar och bygger upp en borg som ska vara så säker som ska skydda dvärgarna mot ev. attacker.
Reclaim Fortress: Blir tillgängligt när man har misslyckats med uppgiften i Dwarf Fortress-läget och monster ha tagit över borgen.
Adventure Mode: RPG, man spelar en hjälte som springer runt i världen och dödar monster och gör uppgifter åt NPCs.
Legends: Inte riktigt ett spelläge, man läser bara legender om vad man har gjort/upptäckt i Adventure och Dwarf Fortress lägena.

Fortress: Axe heart
Gray stuff is smoke, we had no ventilation so the smoke killed every one.
The second layer of my fortress. The only two survivors of the onslaught. The one in the bed room has a broken arm due to her abusive husband. The only reason she survived. Every one else died, military stood no chance... The horror. Blood every where, children and babies dieing from the smoke and fire... Oh god.
But in the end the one in the bed died from thirst, and the mason died when he tried to grab a pickaxe to escape. I had 50 dwarfs at the time of the attack.
Well got nothing else to do so I'll just tell you guys the stories of Axe heart.
I had this farmer and she was always happy. But one day she got depressed and was sad . She walked into my crafts dwarf section of the fortress and started working on a idol. When she finished it I got a message saying "'Name' 'Last name' has created a artifact!". She then carried this idol around with her, everywhere... Then I got a message saying that a thief stole it! She started going crazy when she lost it, she turned over tables and knocked down doors. When one of her close friends walked by the crazy farmer grabbed her finger and broke it! That was the last straw, my sheriff jumped onto of her and busted her skull or some thing. But she died in a minute. I looked at what her friend had to say about it, and she forgave her and was morning her death .
Also a lot of heroic events occurred during the dragon attack. As soon as I saw the dragon I rushed every one inside. My military scrambled to the upstairs armory to grab their fighting gear. Loosely armed with bronze swords and leather armor they did not stand a chance. They formed a wall at the entrance to my fortress and waited for the dragon to enter. Soon enough the dragon was right in front of them. The sheriff charged at the beast hitting it hard in the neck with a battle ax. Not even flinching the dragon let out a wall of fire killing all 15 dwarfs in my military. All hope was lost as most dwarfs where in panic. He came to our main staircase that leads down into the heart of our fort. Knowing what my dwarfs had to do they charged it. What ever they did they did it, the dragon died. But the fort was on fire! Soon announcements kept coming up about how people where dieing from smoke and before I knew it only two dwarfs where left.
