I'm actually primarily a trombone player. But I decided to pick up the flute amoung many other instruments I piddle with.
Any ways maybe it's just because I'm small or something but I'm having trouble holding the flute right without hurting my left index finger.
When I'm not pressing any/or only a few keys all of the weight goes on my index finger.
I had to make a cushion thing out of a paper towel and tape.lol
Anything slightly less...weird I can do?

I rather suspect you aren't holding it correctly. I've never heard of anyone holding their flute correctly and having this problem. Actually, I've never heard of anyone having this problem at all. Get a flute player to check your hand positions and your posture. Try to relax your hands too.

How long have you been playing? That usually plays a part in the pain.

Keep your shoulders and arms relaxed and wrists need to be as straight as possibly. Back straight and chin up. (I can't count the number of times I've said that to students).

When you're practicing, don't practice for long periods of time, that will only hurt more. Take it slow.

perhaps you press that finger a tad too hard because you have a loose screw and pressing it insanely hard is the only way you can hold it and make a sound. i know a former flute had that problem before...

I think special pads are sold to cushion your left hand and right thumb, so you could look into that. But are you sure you're holding it right? The flute should rest right where the index figure joins the hand. And the right thumb should take a lot of the weight, so maybe try putting more on that to lessen the load on your left figure.

i know a girl (first chair by the way) who has that. anyway, i have to shift the weight that way too, but it never really hurts. it's really when you take your thumb off, isn't it? you just have to stick it out. it'll hurt less as you play more.
