Cernunnos had lied to him again. He had said the Game - whatever it was, Diogenes still hadn't really figured it out - was going to be fun. Sure it was nice to wander about such a huge city, but it was really, really boring after a while. The people kept giving him weird looks. Maybe it was his scarf? At any rate...
Well, the God observed dryly, this is, uh... fun.
" 'Tis not." Diogenes muttered, " 'Tis boring." The boy looked around around, his normally bright, wide eyes half closed to keep out the sun's glare. What in the world was he supposed to do now? He figured there'd be at least a little bit of adventure involved in this 'game'. He hadn't ditched his carnival troupe just to be bored...

'Why don't you go to the carnival?' The honey sweet words sounded within Shiri's mind.
"Hm?" Shiri looked up from where she had been studying her shoes at the sound of his voice.
'The carnival's in town. Why don't you visit?'
Shiri smiled lightly, tapping her chin with the back of the golden archer's glove on her hand. "Because I don't feel like it today. You keep asking about it. Did you want to go?"
'I....I've never seen a carnival before.'
She lightly moved over for a passing pedestrian, her eyes nevertheless caught by the rainbow scarf wound around his neck. "Then we can go tomorrow." She looked the approaching figure whose fashion spoke louder than words. She smiled at him, appreciating a style akin to hers in individuality. "I have the urge to give that boy a cookie," she murmured out loud, hand already digging in her bag to find one.

As Diogenes looked around, he couldn't help but notice one of the woman past him. There was just something about her... and then he forgot all about her weirdness at the single word of "cookie". Sweet things were one of the many things that he simply couldn't resist. Stopping, he looked over his shoulder, an inquisitive expression on his face. She looked nice, at the least, and she was digging in her bag... for maybe a cookie? He turned around and hopped skipped over to her, stopping several feet in front of her.
Hey. Cernunnos spoke for the first time since seeing the girl. Boy, I think that girl might be part of the game. She's got that weird aura 'bout her. I can't figure out who her god is though.
Then I'll figure out. The boy replied mentally. Looking at the woman, who was still digging through her bag, he exclaimed brightly, "Hello! If I may inquire, what art thou looking for?"

Shiri blinked, looking up with a lazy smile. "Hi there. I happen to be looking for a cookie. That happens to be for you." Her long fingers withdrew, lightly clutching a bag with home-made chocolate chip cookies. "Would you like it? It's for the scarf."
'Shiri....' There was a warning tone to Eros' voice. 'He's one of them.'
Shiri blinked, turning slightly. "You don't say? Huh. Well, they're adorable. I don't see what's getting you so worked up. He looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly." She returned her attention to the boy, striding to stand next him. "Have it." She gently reached down to grab his wrist, turning his palm upright to place the cookie in his hand. "Enjoy it."

She was talking to herself? Well, Diogenes supposed it wasn't too unusual, as she was a godling, but still... weird to talk out loud. It was really a little more than slightly odd...
Look who's talking, interjected Cernunnos wryly, as if you don't 'talk to yourself' all the time!
But that's different! The boy hotly responded, I talk to you mentally, like this!
Just take the cookie boy, and find out who her god is! And with an air of finality, the gods presence seemed to disappear, leaving Diogenes to himself. It didn't take him a moment of hesitation after for him to start eating to cookie in his hand, staring at the woman inquisitively.
Feigning innocence, which he did incredibly well, he inquired, "Doth thou have an invisible friend? Such as a sprite, or a pixie?" after pausing for a moment, he explained, "I have always wondered if such creatures existed, and I know that, surely, they wouldst been invisible to the average human, yes?"

Shiri smiled indulgently at the boy. Yes, adorable indeed, especially with the archaic speech patterns from one so young. She flushed a bit as his question. Taken in a bit by the naiveté he expressed, she answered in the only way she knew how, "They're as real as you can make them. And...I wouldn't quite call him a friend. But I suppose, yes, I have an invisible pixie friend."
'....Why did you call me a pixie? And don't tell him too much. We don't want to get involved.'
Shiri frowned a bit, then switched the subject. "How do you like the cookie? I make 'em myself, fresh everyday. Is there any particular flavor you like?"

Yup, definitely communicating with a god, there was definitely no arguing there. But, he could take his time, it wasn't that important to find out who the lady's god was. She was nice, that was for sure, and that was really all that mattered, right? Plus, the cookie was really good.
He voiced his opinion, not even having to pretend to act like a little kid anymore, "I really do enjoy the cookie Miss! Were I'm from, the carnival, that is, we are often traveling, so we don't really have time to bake such foodstuffs... I must admit, I haven't tasted a cookie for quite an extended period of time and personally, I like chocolate." He paused for a second, staring at the cookie as if examining it, before turning his gaze back to her. "For sooth, thou makes them every day?"
It was a wonder, really. He hadn't met anyone in his whole life that made cookies that often. Or at all, really.

In spite of Eros's warnings, she was curious. He was sweet, and childlike. Shiri had never been able to resist helping those around her, and a life without time for cookies certainly sounded oppressive enough! "Oh, that must be horrible! It would be for me. And yes, I do bake them. Every day. It's a little ritual for me." She smiled at his enjoyment. It always brought warmth to her heart that she could brighten someone's day even slightly. "You're from the carnival? What's that like? Pixie and I were thinking about going to see it soon."
'....That nickname's stuck, isn't it?'
Shiri giggled at Eros's obvious glum resignation.
