Eleven years ago....

Shiri had never seen so much green. Ever. The only thing she could compare were the rolling fields of her dreams, But still, the vine embraced walls caused her to stand in awe, wide red eyes like saucers as she timidly approached the wooden doors, the light cloth of her dress trailing in the breeze. Rather tall for her six years, she could see just above the bar, which afforded her a view of—more wood. Placing her tentative fingers on the platform, she rose on her tiptoes to gaze around. “Hello?” She spoke up, voice soft with nervousness. He had had told her to go there the night before, so she knew there was nothing to fear, but she still had no idea what to expect. Raising her voice a half octave, she repeated, “Hello?”

”We’re not open, in case you didn’t read the sign.” A young woman closed the closet door behind her, a potted plant in her hands as she neared the girl, her stare quiet and calculating. Absentmindedly, she put the plant in the otherwise bare window for display, her gaze remaining on the girl as she wiped a long strand of chestnut brown hair from her face, a small amount of the long tresses that fell from her back, loosely tied. Her stare was an intense green, and as she neared, she became no less imposing even though she was a mere five feet in height, most of her form draped in an ill-fitting apron. “Is there something I can help you with? Are you lost?” Persy’s brow quirked, sensing the essence of a god in the child. Was the Game really beginning so soon?

Shiri stared up at her, blinking rapidly as her red eyes took in the woman’s path. It occurred to her that she was one of the most beautiful people she had ever met. But to her child-like mind, her mother was still prettier. Shiri inhaled deeply and met her earthly gaze. “I’m to get something from you, I think. He said you’d have a talis-tolas-an amulet for me.” She stumbled a bit on the word, but kept on. “Only if I asked nicely though. May I have it, please?”

Persy sighed, shaking her head. It would seem that they really were coming already. “Alright, but only because you said please,” the young woman responded tenderly, smiling as if amused by some inner joke. Returning to the seclusion of the closet from which she’d originally come from, she emerged a moment later, an odd object in her hands. It seemed to be a glove of sorts, and it smelled faintly of roses.

“It’s not an amulet, but he did leave it for you,” she explained, holding her hands out to the girl with an inquisitive expression. She hadn’t imagined that the mortals would be quite so young. “Tell me, do you know who ‘he’ even is?” It wasn’t her place to ask, but she felt the need to know. It was a dangerous game for such a young girl to not know what she was dealing with.

Shiri smiled in anticipation, biting her bottom lip only slightly. Her grin grew at the golden glove in the woman’s hands. “Thank you very much!” She chirped, reaching out to take the object. She blinked slightly as her question and a thoughtful expression crossed her face. A pained look flashed over her demeanor as she answered, “I’m not supposed to tell….” Shiri trailed off, looking acutely uncomfortable. “But I do know!” She perked up slightly, reassuring smile back in place. “So it’s ok.” She nodded in tacit agreement with herself. Her fingers closed over the wrist of the glove. “Thank you again!”

Persy frowned, but let it go; if the girl knew, then she knew, and if not…she would know soon enough. The hint of death perturbed Persy, but she let that go as well; it was probably nothing more than a death in the family, lingering on the girl. Persy had more important things to dwell upon.

“You’re welcome,” the goddess responded, folding her arms in her typical posture. “Now run along, in case you’re missed.” With a nod, she motioned for the door, indicating that it would be in Shiri’s best interest to leave now.

Shiri blinked and smiled, nodding as she returned quickly to the door, glove clutched to her chest. She curtsied ever so slightly to the woman and ran off, with a brilliant smile on her lips and music in her mind, cradling her precious gift like it was the child she was. There was something to be said about receiving proof that her best friend and only companion existed in the reality outside of her mind.
