Okay, so all you Captians, i have a question:
Does your drumline listen to you?
because mine doesn't
and i drop them for happy drummer pushups ( Eight pusups with your drum on your bach {some one will hold it there} and then you get up and lay Eights one time though repea until drumline capt/ Drum tech says stop. it eally works to get you in shape, and teaches you to listen... don't believe me? TRY IT!!)
they will listen for a whie, but they eventually get sidetracked again...
i've even threatened to cut the from the line! AAAAGGGGGHHHH!!!!
it's soo frustrating. luckily, the marching season is almstover. biggrin

We have one smart drummer, and thank god he's the section leader. The rest just get a lot of push-ups. I'm going to have to tell the drummer section leader about those push-ups. They sound interesting. Also our drummers are stoners.

In my drumline, we just have to stay untill we get all we have to do done. our section leader is a nice guy so we listen to him. (Theres that, and then theres christina who is the scarriest person youll ever meat in your life.) when people wont shut up, we help our capitan get them to be quiet so we can work. and when we get done early, we go home early.

Unfortunately I have a lazy line, [taking over for the Section Leader, I'm the Asst.] If they don't listen to me they either get two laps or they get to kiss the earth about 50 good times...though thats not helping much since they fly through everything. Think I should make them do them in cadence? I'm taking Ideas for next year when I take over. sweatdrop

hey man i go to Canyon Lake and i am the caption of the drumline. when i get guys/girls that dont do as i ask, slak, miss, or are late i make everyone on the drumline run a lap around the school. because the drumline is one and there for if there is one person messing up the hol line did. even if it is i that is the mess up the hol line runs a lap. and after a wile the line will get it and turn on one another to do better bc thay are tired of running for someone els mess up. i have had one person talk back to me and i mad the line run and now noone talks back. but maybe its just my line.

if you wana talk more about this pm me. or send me a im lee_ed_92_64@yahoo.com

I had a drumline that didnt listen too well last year so i made everyone run laps in uniform with their drums, This year almost all of them listen and the ones that dont do 5 to 10 chinups with their instrument. Other than that, just talk to them and figure out why they wont listen and work things out.

I was percussion section leader. Hell to the yeah. And the guys barely ever listened to me. =P I tried all sort of punishments... the only one that seemed to work was storming out of practice. They got really freaked out.

Ok I beat all of u bc I have 4 years of stories. I've been drum captain since freshman year. Although not technically DRUM captain bc I was in pit for 3, but the pit can be pretty un-ruly at times too. especially when ur a freshman, or all of them r freshman.

My freshman year I was pit captain and all of the other pit members were seniors. That is chaos. I tried to get them to listen, but they ignored me bc i was a freshman. I went to the other drum captain(battery captain) for advice. He suggested one thing...laps. The pit NEVER runs laps. They're always lazy. I thought "hmm...maybe that'll work". Needless to say, after bandcamp they listened to me. We ran everyday with the battery. And if somebody didn't do what i said or wasn't prepared or whatever I would pick a numbed between one and ten and that's how many laps they ran. The one and ten thing was great bc i had one guy who thought he was the best bc he always got a low number. Then on the last day he showed up late to a sectional so I said he was running. He scoffed and said "how many boss? 3 laps?" I smirked and said "15. And if u stop u can keep running bc i'm adding 5." The whole pit laughed and that was the end of their un-ruly ness.

Sophmore year was torture. I had ALL FRESHMEN!!!(15 person pit. i'm the lone upper classman. everybody else, freshman. fun stuff. not) They were a season long effort. Band camp, the laps worked. But after that they turned back to their old ways. So I started making them do push-ups aswell. 20 push-ups and 5 laps was the normal amount. But if they were consistent with annoying me then i rose the dosage to newhere between 30-40 push-ups and 10-15 laps. By about mid-season they realized I was serious and they all shaped up

Sophmore year of indoor season was much of the same, although they were less un-ruly after the first week.

Junior year wasn't as bad as sophmore year, but it was still pretty bad. The same things worked for a while. But I decided to do somethin new. Because we had a very very challenging show I decided to make sure we were fit, chop wise. And, having played percussion for 12 years(13 now) I had some pretty insane chops. So I would give them a tempo and they would have to do 10 reps of a warm-up we had called WAR. They hated me soooooooo much for that because they all had wimpy chops. That was a good way to keep them in check.

Senior year was pure torture. I was bass captain and I had 3 rookies that never listened and didn't know their s**t. So myself and the other battery captains would make our sections run just because of the bassline. Then those 3 would have to do 50 push-ups. And I made them wear there drums all the time. Even for water breaks. They shaped up eventually.

It's all depends on what types of kids you have in the section. Some of them respond to torture, while others just need to be heard. Somehow I've managed to always have kids that respond to torture.
The crazy thing is, I wouldn't give up these 4 years for anything

Ok, so not that this is a competition, but top this.

I was drum captain. Of an ALL male line. First year, I was captain of pit but we were small and it went all right. Then they combined the two and had me and one other guy as captains (we had a BIG line). For band camp, the other leader wasn't there, then when he came back, not only was the line unruly, but he was just as sexist and disrespectful.

I've learned that walking out doesn't work, because it just makes them think you're weak. For the underclassmen (freshman/sophomores) I've learned that bribes work EXTREMELY well. Especially with foodstuffs.

The laps work well for all of them, as long as when one person messes up, EVERYBODY runs. And my school is about 5 blocks by 4 blocks, so doing even 5 laps is tough.

In my case, though I wasn't proud of it, I had to kick a kid off the line, and a good one too. He was talented, but cocky, and because he knew he was talented, he felt it necessary to make many sexist jokes my way that made the rest of them unruly. Though my band leader didn't want to, an ultimatum of me versus the sophomore quickly ended in him leaving.

I ultimatley also had to have a face-off with the other captain, which basically ended in me whipping his a** at base and mallets, and him beating me at tenors. So we did end up with a truce to help each other out with the disrespect out of his system, but it shut a lot of the upperclassmen up to see two good seniors whip it out on each other.

Yeah, so I could go on, but name the worst and I've probably dealt with it.

Anyone having issues is welcome to throw a PM my way ^_^

i was pit section leader when i was in 8th grade. my section was okay. there was moments where we would just fool around and we would make music videos.but then i would turn serious and we would get to work.the worst i have ever done is take away their cell phones and ipods or about 50 push ups.no laps i hate them.
