I've been sick lately. (Upper respitory infection) I'm over it now though. My problem is that I have an audition over Christmas break, and my voice is *not* where it was before I was sick. I really need it to be there for me when I go to audition. Does anyone have any great ways to get it back to where it was? I need it to be back to normal in a week and a half.

Ooh! I had one of those 2 years ago. Right before a revue, too. I could have sang bass.
Here's some treatments I hope help you....
Mint tea, as hot as you can stand it with NO sugar. Coffee is not a substitute. Cough drops, the industrial ones that make your tongue feel like its asleep. Steam treatment, then thoroughly blowing your nose.
My big secret: Atomic Fireballs! Be sure to drink plenty of room temp water to reduce the gookiness factor and to keep your vocal chords from whacking out on you. And hum. It dislodges gook and keeps your chords warm.
The Atomic Fireballs knock a lot of the gook out of your sinuses, eases some of the tension in your throat and gives you something to occupy yourself with other than worry. If you can't get an Atomic Fireball, cinnamon gum will do.
With that said, go forth and kick a**. Break a leg! Sad.

Thank you! I've always done fresh lemon to degunk, but it doesn't help with the scratchiness. Here's hoping the fireballs work.

Atomic fireballs...that's a new one. Man, I'll have to try that.
Anyway, I usually just use tea. ^_^; No fancy stuff for me...but good luck with your audition!

Thanks! I've never even heard of using tea. I normally just chug water.
Mouthwash works well to degunk, if you don't have access to a lemon. Well, you don't drink it obviously, but gargling with it clears you out.

A few options that work for me based on the situation:
Sore throat?--gargle room temperature water with salt in it.
Voice going?--a pen and notepad: make friends with it.
Overall--can't beat tea. It works wonders.

I'll tell you honestly, voice rest... the day b4 ur audition, do NOT sing your song a billion tiems....know it b4 that so you can sing it like once the day b4, and once b4 ur audtion... i have vocal nodules(like blisters on my vocal cords) and any voice problems will only go away w/ a lack of talking... unless is mucus related...then tea and cinimon candy or lemon = good

WARM, lol, sry...but never gargle/drink ANYTHING "hot" even tea should cool off a smidge b4 u drink it, risking burning ur throat is not a good thing to do, and the warm water/tea/w.e. will loosen up the vocal cords better than any cold/cool/hot will

AHHH! Guys! Stop what you are doing right now! You are hurting your voices! Oh my gosh. First of all gargling isnt really good for your voice, its not terribly bad but gargling is NOT good. Secondly, NEVER I repeat NEVER drink hot things! Especially not "as hot as you can stand" ahhh, bad! WArm is okay, but hot=BAD! Hot=burns. You dont want your voice to be burned, lol. Thridly lemon= quick fix, but is bad for your voice in the long run. It does clear your throat out, so it does make your voice better at the moment. However, in the long run lemon will hurt your voice. Cough drops work great, as long as you dont use mentholated cough drops or anything that will numb your tounge/throat this includes throat spray. This will numb your throat so you wont know your damaging your voice untill its too late. As for Throat Coat Tea, it is a life saver. I seriously suggest you buy some and drink a cup twice a day using honey instead of sugar. Honey is good for your voice, but dont use it on an audition day because sometimes it can make the gunkiness in your throat worse. Tea of any kind helps really. I suggest for the future you invest in some Echneciea (sp?) tea, or some orange juice (vitamin C) These will build up your immune system and keep you from getting sick. If its cold outside bundle up your voice! Wear a scarf, it will protect your lovely voice from the harsh cold and quick temperature changes. Stay away from cokes and other carbonated drinks while approaching an audition date. Carbonated drinks actually dehydrate you and as a singer you need as much water as you can get. So on audition weeks I trade out my usually can of coke for a bottle of water. Try it your voice will thank you!
