It was... immense. The tall mare trotted to a halt, her blue eyes staring out over the blue sea. It was a clear, bright day but no matter how she started the splotched Aeri could see no end to the vast expanse of water. Standing here, on the cliffs of Quirne, Nyx felt small for the first time in a long time. It made her home in D'ob, the home she had never left until a few weeks ago, seem tiny, limited, enclosed. Still, if she were given the option of moving herself and her herd here the vividly-coloured Nequus doubted she would take it.
For all its beauty, the ocean lacked the lushness of life that her herdlands possessed. There was a starkness to the place, though she supposed this impression was intensified by the waning of the year. Do'b stayed green and pleasant throughout all seasons but here there was a distinct bite to the air that would do foals and elders no good at all and it would only get colder for quite some time from what she knew.
Sighing out a breath she hadn't been aware of holding, the short-tailed mare turned her head to look for her companion. "It's beautiful here, don't you think?" she commented with a soft smile.

Hasani moved up slowly beside beside his mate and stared quietly into the endless expanse of water for a long moment. "Indeed, it's almost as beautiful as you m'love." The stallion shifted for a moment then strode forward his hooves sinking slightly into the sand. He'd been here before somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that this place was burned into his memories as soundly as his love for Nyx was burned into his soul. He continued to move word closer to the waves that were rolling lazily up against the bank. Turning his head he looked up the beach and saw a cliff hanging over the ocean, bellow it mighty rocks jutted out of the sea making her foam and boil in rage at her steady flow being changed. Tossing his mane Hasani moved silently towards the area as if he was possessed.

Before Nyx could respond to his words, the tall stallion had set off alone the sore towards an outcrop of cliff. Frowning to herself, the splotched mare followed in his wake. They had come here to find out about him after all... was this some part of his forgotten past? By the odd look in his red eyes, the mare found herself suspecting so.
What secrets were buried at the back of the tall stallion's mind? What was it that tried to express itself in his dreams? Nyx wished she knew, for his sake and for her own. The sooner they found the answers, the sooner they could return to her homeland. Though she had not long been gone from D'ob and her herd, already the blue-eyed mare missed the lush place and worried for the people of her own specific patch of it.
Was Niz alright? Had she found her blue-coated friend here by the waves or had she failed? Was Varten still about? Had Coleen returned, and if she had who was caring for her? Had Sol found her Kati-nana? All questions she wished she had answers to, all questions she should have answers to.
Yet there it was; duty pulled her in two ways. The duty to her people tugged at her, calling her back to the green valley but her duty to this tall stallion, this stallion she had come to love urged her on.
Pushing uncertainty aside for the time being, the blue-eyed mare quickened her pace to draw level with the other Aeri and whickered softly at him. "Hasani?" she said tentatively, "are you alright?"

((Flashbacks are in italics and smaller))
Hasani blinked slightly and turned his eyes slowly to Nyx, "I think so..." he paused at the edge of the cliff and looked slowly over staring into the waves bellow as they crashed against the jagged rocks. He continued to watch, watching the white foam spew up as if it was trying to reach them standing high above. His ears flicked and even as he stared his whole world seemed to change and contort
Slowly Hasani looked up, another face stared at him giving him the kindest of smiles. A pair of foals danced around the two.
Outside his odd dream Hasani stared at Nyx, his eyes were vacant and glassy and he didn't even seem to realize he was there.
The two foals started chattering, the smaller one whom was a young filly spoke "daddy! when are we going to the beach.." he was about to turn to answer when a pack of predators appeared, Hasani spun to face them.
The stallion spun his glassy eyes narrowing, he was off in his own world reliving something long in his past.
He tried to beat him back and chase them off, but that was all part of their trap. He spun to see them back his young mate and their children towards the edge, he was trapped by two female and the rest of the pack was honed in on their trio but they never got their meal when the edge crumpled and his family along with two of the predators feel into the foaming sea bellow.
To Nyx he probably looked like he;d gone mad because he'd galloped forward and had started spinning thrashing and kicking. Then he'd frozen his face contorting before he whinnied and charged at the edge again, he skidded to a halt and stared once more over the edge then whirled away and tore like a bat outta hades towards a small outcrop of trees.

One moment he'd seemed alright, distant but alright. The next... the next he was fighting things that weren't there and Nyx found herself backing away from the flurry of hooves to avoid being struck. "Hasani?" she tried, not really expecting a response and indeed she did not get one; a moment later the tall stallion was tearing away along the cliff as if possessed.
For a moment the splotched mare stood frozen, watching him go. A heartbeat or two later however she was after him, making the most of her long legs, glad not for the first time in her life that her relatively light build gave her a greater turn of speed than many of her kind could muster.
As the dark stallion fled before her, the mare focused only on the pounding of her hooves and the stretch of her legs; anything to avoid thinking what she'd do when she caught up with her red-eyed beau. Perhaps, the splotched Aeri considered as she forced her body into greater effort, they should not have come here.

Hasani ran and ran, his legs were tight and they ached something horrible and his lungs burned as if they had been set ablaze, but still he refused to stop he just kept pushing himself to move away from the sea and the cliff. The wind whipped to him and seemed to try it's and at calling hi back but Hasani pinned his ears and tried to force himself to go faster.
He felt the cool shadows as he entered the woods that grew up a couple hundred feet form the ocean shore. Limb smacked his face, body , and wings yet he still refused to slow, refused to give his body the rest it was crying out so badly for.
Atleast until he tripped over a root, he fell forward and skidded across the earth into a tiny shadowy clearing surrounded by huge oak trees whose limbs stretched and grew over the area. The large blue stallion just lay there panting his breath sending blades of grass weaving.
Tears rolled across his cheeks as he lay there, what would Nyx think of him when he revealed the truth, he'd had a family... a family he'd utterly failed at protecting, a family that had been pushed over the cliff to their deaths.

She had almost caught him up when the stallion stumbled and the splotched Aeri was forced to dig her hooves firmly into the ground to keep herself from stumbling over him. When she had recovered her balance, the short-maned female turned her gaze onto the other leather-winged creature.
He was crying.
Slowly, uncertainly, Nyx approached the slumped Nequus. The madness was gone from his eyes but she still wasn't sure she knew what to do. As she drew level with the stallion the blue-eyed mare whickered softly and dropped to the earth by his side.
"Hasani?" she said softly, dipping her neck to nuzzle at his cheek, "Hasani what's wrong?" What had happened back there to drive him to a fit of madness? Had it been one of the memories that they had come in search of? Certainly she could think of no other explanation, but what kind of memory must it have been to do that to him? Trying not to come up with possibilities of her own, Nyx awaited a response.

He heard the soft whicker, then the soft voice called his name and her soft muzzle rubbed his cheek. Hasani hiccuped slightly and a sound half between a sob and a painful moan escaped his voice and he slowly opened his eyes to look up at Nyx. She probably thought he was nuts after that display, and still he was pained to think of what she'd see him as after his confession.
He hiccuped again and rolled slowly onto his side, "Oh Nyx....." his voice was barely audibly and the look about him was horrid, his red eyes were dull and seemed to be empty.
He slowly looked up at her tears still streaming down his cheeks, "I had a family ... I don't remember them, I know I was young and it was a planned by our parents from foal hood.... but I couldn't remember even having them till we got to that cliff." He froze again, "I couldn't even save them from some Reya ..."
He went silent again and leaned against Nyx as much as he could, "I diodn't lvoe the mare in a romantic way, she was like my sister and we were both so young and forced to breed ... and she was taken so suddenly," he paused again and his mouth worked opening and closing "and our kids...they were so young just a few days old... and I couldn't protect them any of them." He sobbed again and the tears came back once more.

Nyx was silent and still for a few moments, heartbroken for her beloved. What must it be like to lose a mate, no matter what you felt for them? To lose foals? She couldn't imagine it and as such she hadn't the first clue about how to comfort the red-eyed stallion beside her. Lacking a better idea, the splotched Aeri nuzzled Hasani gently and blew an affectionate breath against his face.
"Darling..." she said hesitantly after a few heartbeats of silence. "Darling... I know you must've done the best you could. By the sounds of it you were outnumbered and if you were young they were probably far more skilled than you... Hasani it wasn't your fault, I'm sure it wasn't, and I'm sure none of them would blame you..." Now what was she to say? "Is there anything I can do?" Well that was a bit of a pathetic thing to say given the circumstances but it was probably better than nothing. This decided, the blue-winged mare gave Hasani another nuzzle, hoping that there was something she could do to comfort him even if it was just to be there.

Hasani let out another sob, he knew he shouldn't just sit there sobbing, it wouldn't bring his foals or the mare back but he didn't know what else to do. A soft breeze made his long mane shift across his thick neck and brush his cheeks. That and the nuzzles from his mate were comforting and reassuring, then a twang of fear struck his heart. What if Nyx became pregnant and something bad happened to the foals or to her! No, he couldn't live with this again.
Hasani tossed his mane, he had to make sure Nyx didn't get pregnant, yea that was the answer right? If she didn't have foals she wouldn't have to go through this should his idiocy put them in danger.
Tossing his mane the stallion slowly rose back to his feet, a cold look of determination had settled in his red eyes and showed for a moment before a mask slipped down over his face to hide it. "No love, you've done everything that was needed." He nuzzled his mate softly and looked around them it was time to leave this place and not return.
Turning swiftly on his heels Hasani moved away not glancing back.

Nyx watched him for but a moment before scrabbling to her hooves and setting off after his dark form. Were they returning to D'ob so soon? She hoped so, she missed it and worried for it. Still, when she got back the hints would start again. She wasn't old, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it was felt by her advisors that 'bad things happened'. They wanted her to take a good mate, or failing that to at least have some foals with her 'blue beau'. Nyx sighed internally and shook her head, hoping that if she and Hasani did have children it would be enough to satisfy them all, that they wouldn't still urge her into finding a 'better' stallion for later children to be her true heirs. The splotched mare gave another shake of her head and carried on after Hasani; only time would tell what the future held for the two of them, and only time would tell if in the end she would follow her heart or her duty.

Hasani moved before his mate still not looking back, the lands of D'ob were still many days travel away but they were headed home ... well to her home at least. Tossing his mane the blue stallion let out a soft snort and paused scenting the air for danger. He was trying his best to still seem like he was the same blue stallion, but it was obvious that he wasn't. His eyes were colder and harder than they had been and his muscles bulged as if he kept them constantly taunt.
Hasani moved forward again and his hooves thudded more heavily, he stared forward with an intent unwavering gaze. Sweet little Hasani was mostly gone now replaced by a fiercer more warlike stallion whom was always on alert ready for the signs of another.
Turning his head the blue aeri gazed at his love and in the secluded darkness of the woods he let himself soften. He paused long enough to let Nyx catch up and draped a wing lazily over her sides.
