I've noticed that in all of the touring Broadway shows I've seen (at least, the ones that have come to my white bread town), there is always, without fail, a standing ovation, even if the show wasn't all that good. I'm really beginning to get sick of how easily people seem to throw that gesture away. I think it should definitely be reserved for the best of the best, the really spectacular.

Am I the only one who has noticed this, or cares?

There was an awesome 21 day blog by resident NY Times b***h Ben Brantley about his 30 shows-20 days trip to London on the west end. There was one part where he commented on how relieving it was to not give an obligatory standing ovation for every show and about how tourists seem to be trained into it. He also said how great it was to not applaud when a familiar face walked on stage, which I personally hate. Yes, I do love some actors and actresses overzealously, but just because they showed their face doesn't mean I'm going to go to pieces over it.
I agree that the obligatory S.O. is a nuisance. I always feel awkward when a show gets a S.O. and I don't think that it was deserved at all. Especially if I am too far to the front, so if I don't stand I look like a snob (which I'm not denying).

Clapping when a familiar face makes an entrance? I've not seen a lot of theater, so I'm glad I've never encountered that (although, I'll admit I went a little bit fangirl when I saw Manoel Felciano and Michael Cerveris for the first time, but I kept that to myself).

If I think a show doesn't deserve a standing ovation, I typically sit for as long as I can. It does feel pretty snobbish, but I think I'd rather be a little snobby than obnoxiously enthusiastic.

I am happy to say that I have never run into this problem. When I have seen a good show, it was given a standing ovation. When I have seen a bad one, it hasn't. I never have been in a situation where I found myself obligated to stand just because everyone else is standing.

I am okay with standing ovations and I'm even okay with the clapping for familar or famous faces entering onto the stage. What I am NOT okay with is when people start to hoot and holler like animals. For ovations, to a point I accept it, but NEVER for entrances. It's in the middle of a performance! Save it for afterwards! Geez!

I don't like to give standing ovations very often. If I do, it feels less special. D;
I went to go see Singin' in the Rain at a local performing arts high school and it was good. Nice dancing and quality sets. But I didn't give it a standing ovation, it wasn't outstanding to me. :/
A lot of the people were family of the cast and of course they stood up and gave standing ovations. Since a good majority of people were standing, the other two people I came with also stood up and tried to get me to stand, but I didn't.
Sure, I felt prissy by not standing, but it was my opinion of the show verses their opinion.

So back on topic, I do agree with you that standing ovations should be reserved for a truly spectacular show. :3
